Rocky Neck Getting Ready to Rock

Image

Joey came by the gallery on Rocky Neck yesterday and took these shots.  His new work looks great, and I don’t look too wild for four days without a fix.  Still in the process of hanging and organizing – aiming to open Mother’s Day weekend with a grand opening bash Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, and the first Mug Up of the season on Sunday, May 27th.

She’s back … and she brought a friend. Let’s welcome Chelsea & Megan tonight at the Brew Pub @ 5pm.

Last month, one of our favorite local artists, Chelsea Berry brought a friend to town: Colorado singer/songwriter Megan Burtt — and now she one of our favorites too.  Here are two videos from one of last month’s concerts.

Powerful story of friendship and adventure followed by a song full of wisdom that seems far beyond her years (see more videos from that concert here.)

One  of our favorite Chelsea Berry songs that we think she should sing at every gig!

There’s music all day today.  It’s going on now at Alchemy and continues into late in the evening at Dog Bar, where Ryan Alto starts at 9.  See the full music lineup here.

Warren Buffet Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

April 26, 2012
“Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”
Warren Buffet (1930-      )

image

Among the three or four richest people in the world, Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, had a net worth of $62 Billion in 2011. He is often described as the Sage of Omaha, for his hometown and investing acumen. He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and has pledged to give away almost all of his wealth through the Gates Foundation. When he found that he paid a lower tax rate than his employees who made far less money he proposed the “Buffet Rule” increasing the tax rate for the wealthiest individuals. He is a avid player of bridge and funds a yearly competition between American and European players.

That’s it – I Quit!

Smoking, that is.  On April 24th.  After 40 years.  Right now I am a short tempered bundle of unfocused energy, trying to get my mind to stick with one thing long enough to complete something, anything.  I am wandering aimlessly from one room to another, starting things and then moving on to something else.  Being usually very focused, this withdrawal symptom drives me nuts and makes me cranky.

I can use some help from my GMG family, words of encouragement, suggestions, along with some serious threats if I even think about having a cigarette.  Well I will obviously think about it, but no one will know except me, as long as I don’t actually take one up.  And you friends, contributors, and neighbors who smoke, please do not offer or give me a cigarette, or even a puff, no matter how nicely or persistently I might beg you.  Also, please don’t take offense if I avoid you while you are smoking, at least until I feel strong enough to be in its presence without fear of caving in.

I am eating so many carrots that I will probably soon be able to see at night like a cat, through orange tinted eyes.

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS: A Day in the World

Become part of an extraordinary photographic experience. On May 15 shutterbugs of all levels of experience and skill will participate in what will probably be the most extensive documentary photographic effort ever. This world wide event is called “A Day in the World” and is intended to create a huge photo database of all aspects of life throughout the world as we live it on that single day.

Of the millions of expected photos, some will be selected for inclusion in a book to be published this fall, while others may appear in electronic exhibitions around the globe. All photos will be archived and saved for use by social scientists and historians.

You may submit up to ten photos shot on May 15 in any of three main themes: home, work and connections, with lots of subcategories to choose from. Learn more and sign up at www.aday.org. I hope GMG will be well represented in this historic undertaking.

Coast Guard searches for missing kayaker, requests public assistance

image

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is searching for a possible missing kayaker after a red kayak was located in the Annisquam River south of Wingaersheek Beach, Mass., Tuesday.

A good Samaritan located the kayak near the mouth of the Mill River at approximately 3 p.m. and notified the Coast Guard.

The kayak is a Field and Stream model and has a serial number of XLJ95913C111.

A Coast Guard Station Gloucester 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew is currently searching the area.

"We aren’t sure if the kayak simply broke free from a mooring or if there’s someone really missing," said Ens. Michael Barker, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center. "Along with sending out a search crew, we are asking the public to let us know if they have any information regarding the owner of the kayak."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sector Boston Command Center at 617-223-5757.

The Coast Guard recommends kayakers and other paddlers place a Paddle Smart sticker with their name and phone numbers where rescuers may reach them or a friend or relative in the event their kayak is found. Paddlers and kayakers can also use a waterproof, permanent marker to write the information on their craft.

What you never saw & What to watch for in Brad Byrd’s New Video

Yesterday former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brad Byrd released his new video on GMG (see here) directed by another former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brandon Rose.  Excellent job, Brandon, Brad, Brie and everyone who made this happen!

Part of this video was shot at Minglewood Tavern on St. Pat’s day, so we thought we’d piece together some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of that video for you to see today.  You’ll see actresses Brie Hobbs trying out for the part of Brad’s girl-friend at the casting call and Stacey Iwanicki, who played one of the fans.  And of course you’ll see our boy Joey C, who was there for the entire shoot.  In the final video, there’s a good shot of Joey in the audience.  Welcome to the big time, Joey!

Brad will be shooting another video at Minglewood next Saturday, May 5, so you’ve got another chance to be in the audience and get on screen!  Stay tuned to GMG for details.

You know summer is on the way when there are 8 venues with music on a Wednesday night in Gloucester alone!  See the full music lineup here.

And the build-out continues!

Just wanted to update everyone that we had a great day on Monday at Art Haven’s new space, finishing building out some walls, getting the art materials thrift store cleaned out, and Sal Russo coming through HUGE by finishing repointing the back wall of our function room!

Here’s the awesome crew from Chris Fogarty Carpentry who generously volunteered their time to put up most of the walls in the space:

And the RAYS kids helping to get the thrift store ready!

And even a couple of the TAG kids stopping by to check out the awesome new space they’ll get to use! (Can you tell their excited?)
