Branded in Gloucester: a wartime documentary film

During World War II, hundreds of Italian and Sicilian residents of Gloucester were labeled enemy aliens. They had to register with the government, carry identification cards, and live under curfews and travel restrictions. Some fishermen were barred from the harbor, even as their sons shipped out in Army and Navy uniforms from the same waterfront. The government took the boats.

Hence Branded Aliens, the documentary we are making with Mia Millefoglie, Laura Ventimiglia, and Matthew Bradley. The film is in its early stages. A six-minute sample is online now, and the full documentary will be completed in 2027.

We are looking for Gloucester residents with family history from this period. We also want to hear from anyone with stories or experience to share. If you would speak with us on film, if you have photographs, certificates, letters, or a relative who never spoke about it and you now understand why, reach out to us at szerilli@gmail.com
