Well, anybody who thinks Cape Ann’s music scene is only hot during tourist season should look at this weekend’s lineup (see full weekend music schedule here).
That’s the good news. The bad news is that you just can’t see every good show this weekend. You’re gonna have to choose. Maybe I can help. It just so happens that I’ve recently interviewed two people who are performing this weekend at Shalin Liu.
Plus some of Cape Ann’s favorites all over town, including Linda Amero, Charlee Bianchini & Dave Brown, Runaround, Dan King, Michael O’Leary, Mari Martin, Allen Estes & Orville Giddings — and there’s the Community Sing-a-long in Celebration of Pete Seeger at the Lanesville Community Center tonight. WOW! Is your head spinning? Click here for some help choosing.

It’s a double whammy for me this week as I get to do the do with Mr. Justin Quinn twice! That’s right, he’s my special guest this Thursday nite at the Rhumby and I get to do it again on Sunday at Glenn’s in Nbpt. Mr. Q. or “Sonny Boy III” as I refer to him is the logical extension of both Mississippi saxophonists I and II schmeared with a heavy dollop of Li’l Walter thrown in with some Jameson’s Irate Whiskey for good measure. He sings, too, whilst allowing his sidemen to vent, like Vesuvius, to the boogie beat. Beware of microbursts!
Sidemen include Mr. Jon Ross, Klonopin® King and razor-like Samurai, on catarrh and vocals, the calvous Mr. Paul Foss of Bangor, Me. , an old prison cellmate, on keyboards, Mr. Ephraim Lowell, late of Broomful of Blooze, on tintinabulators and me on base . You’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your fate with Blooze-o-dent. Hours: 8 to 11.
Kendrick is bringing his high-energy orchestra to Rockport’s Shalin Liu Performance Center this Saturday, February 8th at 8:oo p.m.
This concert will benefit the students of the NYMO, including their scholarship fund.
Kendrick talks about how he came to be the director of New Life Jazz Orchestra, which was not what he had planned to do when he attended Berklee College of Music and gives us a preview of the excellent music we will hear on Saturday — plus you get to hear some of that music in the interview too.

The music is western-themed, and it will be performed by a five-piece band. The drummer is a photographer by day, and he’s taken some beautiful pictures of dramatic scenes in the west. Photos are going to be projected as a sort of backdrop for the band.

Pete Seeger, one of America’s best-loved folksingers, an untiring activist, environmentalist, and an inspiration to many, passed away on January 27th, 2014.
Folk Life Studio and members of the Cape Ann folk-singing community invite all to an open community sing-a-long to celebrate the life, spirit and music of Pete Seeger.
Come as you are! Bring a song or a story, a snack or non-alcoholic beverage to share if you wish.
Acoustic musical instruments are welcome, too! This will be a participatory evening, as what could be a more appropriate way to remember and honor Pete?
We’ll start at 7 to be more accessible to families with young children. Song sheets will be available. Spread the word! Bring your friends! Bring your family! There is no charge for admission.
Carlo Cicala will be joining Patrick Nelson tonight and will be singing some great Italian/American songs (in Italian and in English). Giuseppe’s from 6 to 9.
First, let me thank you all for allowing me to present the good Old Salty Jazz Band last week.It was a huge success. People were weeping in the aisles. Took me two days to recover. I think i’ll do it again this summer.
Now, back to reality. This week is yet another shootout at the ofay corral as we feature two ghastly titans of instrumental guitar, Mr. Bobby Davis, old Johnny Carwash himself,
and Mr. Billy Loosigian. Last time Bobby was here, the cleanup crew were wailing and gnashing their dentures for a week. Tore the place apart. Billy has been practicing his three chords necessary for the attainment of bliss for some time now and will prove to be the perfect shiny mirror to Bob’s succinct style. Jeff Casper, the friendly drumbler, will be on hand to answer any questions. I won’t have any answers. This is going to be big fun.
Don’t forget winter hours: 8 to 11. You can get 10 to life if you’re not careful.

Clockwise from top- left: Mike Dawes, Pino Forastiere, Quique Sinesi, Brian Gore
Earlier this afternoon I interviewed Brian Gore, who is bringing his International Guitar Night to Shalin Liu next Friday, Feb 7.
Four extraordinary guitarists: Brian Gore from San Francisco, Pino Forastiere from Italy, Quique Sinesi from Argentina and Mike Dawes from England will each perform solo and then all together creating a sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before on guitar.
In this interview Brian talks about his music, various guitar tunings and genres — and he gives us a hint of what we can expect next Friday.
If you’re still not sure you want to go, watch this video of Brian on Guitar:
