Ghetto Mysticism’s Stanton Davis and Les Lumley join Henri Smith on June 30th at North Shore Music Theatre

If you went to Celebrate Gloucester, you saw Stanton Davis on trumpet (you can see one of his solos at the end of this video).  Stanton led a very popular Boston ensemble in the in the late 1970s called Ghetto Mysticism.  In the video below the band got together at Scullers 3 years ago and invited Henri Smith to sing a couple of songs.

On June 30th Henri brings Stanton and Ghetto Mysticism’s percussionist Les Lumely to North Shore Music Theatre along with other top New Orleans musicians to open for Aaron Neville.  This will be a night you won’t soon forget!  Get tickets here.

This is a big week on Cape Ann.  It’s the first summer week with more than 40 artists at 18  venues (and Summer doesn’t technically start until next week).

Today we were told that Ned Nugent and Mark Pelosi will join Dennis Monagle tomorrow at Minglewood.  Check this week’s complete Gloucester music lineup for all the latest updates.

Zip Line Kid Saves Bird Nest & Eggs

Well, our son John has a new project this week.  While repairing our roof, we displaced a bird nest with eggs in it and John moved the nest with some help from Vickie, who’s been talking to the bird for some time now suggesting that she really didn’t want to be in our roof anyhow.  Watch this video and see how mother and son help out another mother and her (hopeful) offspring.

13 venues with music spread throughout the day, all day and night — it’s going on right now!  No reason to stay home.  Check out the full music lineup here.

Local Favorite Opens Blues Festival ~ Top Local Talent On Stage with National Recording Stars!

Did you really think Gloucester would have a Blues Festival without featuring Local Talent?  Not in the Live Music Capital of the World!  (Just in case you thought that was Austin TX, check this out)

Gloucester’s favorite New Orleans transplant, Henri Smith will open the Blues Festival on August 11 at Stage Fort Park.  (If you want to see & hear the national recording stars who will follow, check out all the videos on this page.)

Exactly three weeks from today (and six weeks from the Blues Festival) Henri and his band open for AARON NEVILLE at North Shore Music Theatre in Aaron’s only Northeast US concert this year.  You know you want to go to both concerts.   Get Aaron Neville tickets here and Blues Festival tickets here.

More proof that Gloucester is in fact the live music capital of the world can be found by checking out the live music schedule for this weekend.  More new listings since yesterday bring us to 25 artists at 17 venues just tonight and tomorrow — ’nuff said!

Move Aside Austin ~ Gloucester, MA is the New Live Music Capital of the World!

Austin, TX claims to be the Live Music Capital of the World saying that they have the most music venues per capita.  Now the Austin Chronicle lists 923 Venues for a city of 790,390 people, which works out to 1 music venue for every 856 people.

I decided to check the gimmesound.com database and found 68 venues in Gloucester which have music from time to time (not every night).  Gloucester has 28,789 residents as of the 2010 census, so that works out to 1 music venue for every 423 people, which is more than TWICE the music venues per person as Austin TX, making Gloucester the true LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!  Spread the word, folks!

This weekend alone we have over 3 dozen artists at 17 music venues — and one of those venues is a schooner — try that Austin; you’re 200 miles from the water!

See the full live music lineup here.

Now, for those of you where thinking you would defend Austin because they have SXSW, which I have to admit is pretty cool, don’t forget that on August 11 (when the average high in Austin is 96 and very humid) Gloucester is having a Blues Festival and our average temp for that day is 79.  Where would you rather be?  Wait …  don’t answer until you see this video of Lucky Peterson, who will be at the Blues Fest!

And if this doesn’t convince you, check out all the videos on this page.

Why do they call this the Kenny Neal(s) Band?

Why the (s)?  Watch the video and see how long it takes you to figure it out.  If you don’t get it after 20 seconds, have another cup of coffee . . .

Kenny will be at the Gloucester Blues Festival.  It won’t be long before the sun heats things up around here and you’ll be at the beach, Fiesta, whatever … where you might forget that you can save $12 by getting tickets ahead of time, so get tickets now and stop worrying.

If you don’t remember who’s playing, click here for our video introducing the performers.

Our local music scene is already hot with 10 live music choices tonight (more really, because Nights on the Neck alone has 6 live shows between 5 and 8:45 and we only list them once — see their full schedule here).

And let’s not forget Bradley Royds begins his Thursday Night Series at Giuseppe’s.

We’ve been getting new listings all week long so click here to see the new updated music lineup.

Thursday Night Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line to Host Mario Perrett with Ed Scheer on drums.

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

Dave says,

We had so much fun last week with Ed Scheer on board that i’ve decided to have him back this week to play along side his old teammate Mr. Mario Perrett. Cutie-pie saxist, former Playgirl© pinup, teen idol and magnificent vocalizer, Mr. MP has what it takes to raise any bar. For years he was the sexaphonist in the Love Dogs as well as in Madhouse. It’s always a pleasure to have both these guys around. They play, they sing, they wear my shirts and steal most of my songs, too. Anybody seen my wallet?
We always manage to pull out all the stops as well as your leg and your finger. With gootar-king and milliner Mr. Greg t. and myself aboard, we’re hoping to have a rousing good time. So bring your dancing shoe and your stump and hobble waddle doodle all night long!
N.B. If you have any friends or enemies who might like these minor missives, just send their addresses along to me. Always looking to spread the joys of music!

Are you in this video? Depends on were you were on May 5 …

If you were at Minglewood Tavern on May 5, you just might be in Brad Byrd‘s new video On My Way Down shot by Hollywood Director Brandon Rose that night.  If you can’t remember May 5, perhaps you’re the one dancing, singing the words and pointing in the air at 1:24 seconds into this video.

You may remember our series on Brad’s hit video Zero to the 101 shot by Brandon on St. Pat’s day (here’s some behind the scenes footage of that shoot).

Brad is Allen Estes‘ guest on this week’s Local Music Seen, which premieres tonight at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  It’s a half hour of excellent music and fascinating dialogue between two of Cape Ann’s best songwriters.  Plus you’ll get to hear three songs by Brad and Allen’s new song The Trouble with Me.

When the show is over, you can choose from half a dozen live music venues tonight with music for every taste you could imagine.   See the full live music schedule here.

Have you seen the sun today?  It’s coming back and will be here in full force soon enough, which is a good reminder to save $12 by getting your tickets now for the Gloucester Blues Festival on Saturday August 11 at Stage Fort Park.  See you there!

Yes folks, Sun will shine again, and when it does top Blues Stars will also shine on Gloucester

Yesterday’s video introduced you to the Gloucester Blues Festival performers (click here if you missed it) and promised a week-long preview.  Today, we feature the headliner Shemekia Copeland, whose stellar performance at the White House recently aired on WGBH TV.  Watch the video and you’ll know why you have to get tickets now, so you can save $12.

Just since yesterday, we’ve received new music listings, including a live Blues Concert featuring Rita Chiarelli (Canada’s Queen of the Blues) at Cape Ann Community Cinema on Friday and  T Max’s CD Release Party at the Dog Bar on Saturday.  See new updated music lineup here.

Blues Festival Performer Preview

On August 11, Paul Benjamin & Bob Hastings bring some of the world’s best blues artists to Gloucester for what we hope will be an annual event, the Gloucester Blues Festival.  In this video (the first of our week-long Blues Festival Series) the producers give you a preview of some of the music you’ll hear and artists you’ll see.  Remember, you can save $12 if you buy tickets in advance ~ Get tickets here.

It’s a great week for music on Cape Ann with 22 artists performing between now and Thursday alone!  See the full music lineup here.

The DJ Rant

I’ve kept this one bottled up for far too long.

Much like The How To #U@& UP A Lobster Roll Rant, The Broads Out In California Lobster Roll Rant, The Note To Restaurant Owners Rant, The Follow Up To The Note To Restaurant Owners Rant, The Bluetooth Headset Rant , The Soggy French Fry Rant, The Pensive Pose Rant, these are more like Public Service Announcements.  I’m just trying to make the world a better place.

This one goes out to the DJ’s of the world.

image

It is time to retire Celebrate, We Are Family and YMCA from your music library.

I will go so far to say that if the DJ you hire plays any of these songs you should fire him on the spot and take over the wheels of steel, iPod, or whatever else is driving the music.-YOU CAN DO A MUCH BETTER JOB!

We went to a benefit a couple of months ago and this DJ who was much younger than me started doing his thing.  I swear he didn’t play a single song from this decade or last decade.  We’re talking straight 80’s.  From start to finish.   Not a single person danced to a single song except the party organizers who were obviously embarrassed by the DJ selection.

There was hope when I saw this particular DJ was 30ish.  Nope- he may have been the worst DJ of ALL TIME.

I like lots of classics, I really do, but really there is a music catalog beyond those same old tired tracks that you hear at every wedding or fundraiser since 1982.

image

My advice either these old DJ’s either better get current or the young kids running their equipment from iPad’s are gonna eat your lunch.

NEW MUSIC HAS BEEN CREATED IN THE PAST 5-10 YEARS I SWEAR!

and any of you that tell me that the new music all sucks, you just haven’t listened, there are some great new artists out there.

I want to give these older DJ’s a chance to update their libraries but honestly in the past three years I’ve probably been to 20 events where there was a DJ and you know what the trend is?

The trend is that the high school kids who are buying equipment are doing a bazillion times better job than the older DJ’s around that rehash the same old playlists from the 80’s.

Get with it or step aside and let the youngsters take over.

My Boy Matty K from the Farm Bar and Grille is IMO the greatest DJ around these parts.  Sista Felicia had a youngster spinning at BJ and Amanda’s Graduation party last night and he killed it.

RETIREMENT RECEPTION FOR BAND DIRECTOR DAVID BENJAMIN

Sally Benjamin writes-

Hi Joey,
I’m hoping you can help me to get the word out on Good Morning Gloucester about a retirement party we are having for my husband, David Benjamin. He is the O’Maley School and Gloucester Elementary School Band Director. He is retiring after thirty years with the Gloucester Public Schools and we would like to let his former students and their families know that there is going to be a send-off reception on Tuesday, June 12, from 7-9pm at the Gloucester High School cafeteria. The Cape Ann Big Band will perform and refreshments will be served. I have attached the invitation I sent to some of his friends and colleagues. I can be reached by email (this address) or home telephone: 978-281-2286.
Thanks for your consideration.

Last of The Eastern Rigs From Jon Campbell

Jon writes-

I spent a lot of time around Gloucester over the years. As you’d leave out of the harbor, I used to see a small Eastern Rig tied up at the end of Rocky Neck past the railway. Got to thinking about how the old-timers felt about those boats, made a song.

Down here in Pt. Judith the ‘Roanne’ ended up at Mystic Seaport, and the "E Carl Rice " got cut up and put in a dumpster.

Was looking at your photos of American Eagle and thought I’d see if you wanted to use this song to put together a montage piece using some of your old pics.

Got Alan Estes to join us out at the Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering last year, but he didn’t make it this year.

Drones Club is the private club for Pt. Judith fishermen, has toilet seats from long gone boats nailed to east wall.

I’m supposed to play up at Harbor Loop this year, not sure when, here’s a last video of a song dear to our hearts down here at the water’s edge in RI.

So much to do tonight ~ How do I choose?

Don’t choose.  Do it all!  OK, all might be a tad ambitious, but you can do a lot because the first show starts at 6:30 and the last one at 9:30.  See the complete music lineup here.

Tonight is your last chance to see Inge Berge at Giuseppe’s (8pm).  He’s one of our favorites and if you haven’t heard his new song with ever-so-slightly-tragic, but perfectly insightful lyrics set to a catchy, lyrical tune that is signature Inge, check it out here (you can read the lyrics too, but you don’t have to because Inge actually sings clearly, so you can understand them!)  You might want to request this song tonight, too.

At 6:30 you can see former gimmesound Artist of the Week Orville Giddings with Mark Earley at Captain Carlos.  Here’s a video of Orville at In a Pig’s Eye in Salem.  Notice how he quiets the crowd with his captivating performance

Thursday night blues party @ The Rhumb Line to host Cheryl Arena

Dave says,

I gotta keep it short and sweet this week cuz the vodka tanker truck is due any minute, so here goes:
Back for a rondezvous with destiny is that fabulous femme fatale: Ms. Cheryl Arena. Yep, she’s back up here in the northwoods once again, and ready to chase you back to whatever evil world you come from. Throw vocals, harmonica, and charisma in a 55 gallon drum of water, add an outboard motor, and there she is!
And furthermore, the band is really cool. We all have mental goatees. First off is John Cameron Swazee, who takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’, on piano and mood organ. Way kool. Then there’s Mr. Ed, Scheer, that is , on drumulators and random gargling. And the dystopic duo of Gregg Tee and Dave Sag on gritarrh and bass. Oops, I must dash: truck is here.
