My View of Life on the Dock
The Rocky Neck Gallery is looking incredible this year. Don’t miss the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 25th from 6:00 – 8:00. The same night, Carol McKenna will be having her Opening Reception from 5:00 – 8:00 in the red barn on Madfish Wharf. Rocky Neck as a whole is looking amazingly good this year. All the galleries have amped it up and are totally professional and look great. So put Rocky Neck on your schedule of places to go and things to do this Memorial Day weekend.
Starting off the weekend, make sure you check out the new kids on the block at Madfish Wharf. Liz Sullivan and Jamie O’Neill (and their little 2 year old Owen) will be having their Opening Reception at ZBY Gallery tonight (Friday) from 5:00-10:00pm at Gallery 6 (Joe Weiler’s old gallery and where Aquatro was last year). They have some really fresh and exciting work that you don’t want to miss. Come by and welcome them to Rocky Neck and Madfish Wharf. Afterwards, pop into Madfish Grille and get your groove on with Groove Therapy who have a groovy sound, that will get you movin’ – a great way to warm yourself on a bleaky Friday night. Yes, I said groovy, man.
Also, don’t forget Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Grand Opening Mug Up Sunday, May 26th from 9:00am until . . .

SNEAK PREVIEW OF WHAT’S IN STORE: In addition to pomegranate mimosas, deviled eggs, key lime and regular cheesecake, special unidentified Sister Felicia treat and Deb Schradieck’s egg and sausage casserole, some early treats got delivered this afternoon. Anne and Bob Kennedy can’t be here tomorrow, so they dropped off a batch of her carmelized bacon with chocolate dipping sauce. Uncle Marty Daley was in the house and got to try some. I bet he’ll be back tomorrow for more. Then Deb dropped off a batch of peanut butter and jelly muffins. I had to try one, just to make sure they were ok for everyone. They are to die for. BEWARE! This Grand Opening Mug Up is not for dieters.

Gloucester’s Sarah Green will host a special screening of the Terrence Malick-directed romantic drama To The Wonder, which she produced, on Saturday, May 25th at 7:30pm at The Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester.
Green’s impressive filmography includes Jeff Nichols’ Mud (also now in theaters) and Take Shelter, as well as the boxing drama Girlfight. She has worked frequently with David Mamet and John Sayles, and produces all of legendary auteur Malick’s films, including The Tree Of Life, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture in 2012.
To The Wonder, which stars Oscar winner Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem, was the last film reviewed by the late great film critic Roger Ebert, who awarded it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, saying of the interactions between its characters, “As all of these relationships intertwine, Malick depicts them with deliberate beauty and painterly care.”
Tickets for this special event are $15.00 ($13.50 for Cinema Members), and benefit the Cinema and its upcoming Kickstarter campaign to upgrade its projection equipment. Tickets can be purchased at www.CapeAnnCinema.com (or in person at the box office).
A full schedule can be found on the Cinema’s website at www.CapeAnnCinema.com.
| “Little Bit Of Blue” Celebration. with special guests, the Rockport High School Madrigal Choir, led by Patti Pike.Come join us in the stunning Shalin Liu Performance Center for the North Shore celebration of our “Little Bit Of Blue” album release. This venue was built for sound, with a beautiful ocean view backdrop. We are thrilled to be joined by the Rockport High School Madrigal Choir. We will also show two videos, “The Ladies’ Tree” about Joan of Arc and animated by Harvard animation professor and Mr. Fox back-up singer, Ruth Lingford, as well as “Helium” directed by Emile Doucette and featuring performers from the New England Center for Circus Arts.Thank you for letting our music into your ears and hearts! |
What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? is making music that feels exposed and personal, but cinematic in scope. The Boston/NYC band blends baroque pop with soul noir, conjuring up something like the dark-tinged drama of Florence + The Machine, the roots of Aretha Franklin, and the songcraft of the Decemberists.
The first thing that listeners respond to is the soulful warmth and strength of lead-singer 3rian King’s gender-defying voice, which “can simmer in blues, tremble with high drama, and faint into a yawning croon,” according to Michael Brodeur of the Boston Phoenix. Next are the words, from deeply intimate songs to those that cross into a mystical realm, making the personal feel timeless and mythic.
Named after a Victorian children’s game, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? can time-travel from the woods of Medieval France to a 1930s New Orleans jukejoint. The effect resembles a gay male Adele leading a steampunk parade of music-school renegades. The group sells out legendary clubs like Club Passim & Oberon (Cambridge, MA) and The Duplex (NYC) and recently earned the Critic’s Pick in Time Out NYC.
Its original song “Cold Rain” was covered by New Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas on her Grammy-nominated CD “Simply Grand,” with the track earning high praise in Rolling Stone, USA Today & The Village Voice.
Mr. Fox’s own CD “Little Bit Of Blue” was just released in March 2013. This performance will feature a new music video by Harvard University animation professor and Mr. Fox Fury, Ruth Lingford, as well as a new music video by Emile Doucette, showcasing the many talents of students and teachers at the New England Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro, VT.
Mr. Fox will be joined on stage by The Rockport High School Madrigal Choir, under the direction of Patti Pike. Mr. Fox fiddler and trumpeter, Nathan Cohen, works closely with Patti Pike in the Rockport Schools where he is director of orchestras from 4th-12th grade. This collaboration should prove to be an exciting evening for all.

Paul Jermain, Cape Ann TV board president writes,
“Thanks for accepting our invitation to participate in the CATV annual meeting next week.
You know, historically, CATV annual meetings, like most other of that ilk, have been a tad boring. Yes, the business got done, but holy smokes, it could be dull.
That’s why I’m so excited about the new format we’re going to try out next week, and your participation in it.
In contrast to an endless chain of drawn out speeches, this event is going to revolve around you and some select other producers. Now, I have to share a little bit about the Station in review of last year’s highlights. But, really, the core of the evening is going to be you and the others sharing a bit about your programs- how and why you got started; what you learned; and some interesting moments and clips. As a producer myself, I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to share. And you’ll probably enjoy listening to the other folks as well.
What: CATV Annual Meeting
Where: CATV Studio, 38 Blackburn Center
When: Tuesday, May 28th, 7-8pm
Why: Celebrate the achievements of the station and the producers over the past year.
I’m looking forward to seeing you again and working together to deliver an evening that people will really enjoy and appreciate.”
Thanks Paul for writing. I met Allen Estes at the station yesterday and he is looking forward to participating as well. Best wishes for the new format!
As previously announced, I will be teaching an origami class at the Hive tonight. I can tailor the content to the interests and needs of those present. We can do some nautically themed origami, including a variety of boats, and maybe a sea serpent (as in the photo above).
Or, have you bought an origami book or kit for yourself or a family member, only to have it get dusty on the shelf because no one can figure it out? You are not alone! Bring it to the class, and I can teach the group how to read the diagrams and fold some models from the book! It doesn’t matter how simple or complex the model is – I can help you understand what’s going on. Sometimes, the problem is that the diagrams are poorly done, or just plain wrong. I can help you over those obstacles!
As a final option, if there’s something you’d like to learn how to make, sign up for the course and let me know what you want to learn (and what your skill level is), by commenting on this post or by some other means. I will do my best to find something to suit your interest! I have over 100 origami publications in my personal library, and can also find a variety of instructions on the internet.
I hope to see you there!
Coastal Dog Apparel makes anti-chafing swim suits for boys and men. Coastal Dog suits are 100% made in the USA, and all profits from sales of the suits go to help children in need.
The idea for the anti chafing suit came after a summer spent at Wingaersheek beach in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Stephanie and her family had to cut beach days short due to chafing and skin abrasions her son ended up with due to surf and sand. The skin irritation was constant and made long days at the beach all but impossible.
Stephanie tried several solutions, cutting out the mesh of new suits, her son wore briefs under a suit, creams andgels for the chafed skin after the fact. Finally, she decided to solve the problem and stop chafing before it started. The Coastal Dog swim suit was born. ![]()
Stephanie, designed the suit, sourced the materials, and found local fabricators, as making the suit in the USA was important to her.
Coastal Dog suits are available online at:
www.coastaldogapparel.com
And, in select stores.
Stephanie Magee, Founder and CEO of Coastal Dog, worked as a Preschool teacher as well as a Director of preschools which is where her start up and entrepreneurial skills formed. Much of her time was spent creating a school from the ground up and helping prospective parents share in the vision of the school to be.
One of Stephanie’s greatest passions is helping others and lending a hand to those in need. Coastal Dog is Stephanie’s way of helping families and children enjoy their time a the beach while also creating company which gives back to children’s charities.

Hi Joey,
The Schooner Adventures is having water tight bulkheads installed to meet Coast Guard specifications.
They started by using a fiberoptic system to look between the ceiling and the hull to find the best locations for the bulkheads…
They had to insert dowels into strategic spots where water could flow between the ceiling and bulkhead. Then the construction
began. It is a very time consuming process as there are ne straight lines for the boards to attach. The guys are custom fitting
each board to snuggly fit the curves of the vessel. They are not being nailed into place but rather are precisely measuring,
cutting, and chiseling.

Gloucester Fire and School Departments Launch Community Education Project
Gloucester Fire Chief Eric L. Smith and School Superintendent Richard Safier announced they are teaming up to provide fire safety education to elementary, middle and high school students. Chief Smith said, “In light of the recent tragic fires in Gloucester, we want to educate the students on how to prevent fires and how to survive those that do occur.” He added, “By bringing information home to grown-ups on smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and making and practicing home escape plans, we hope to increase the safety of Gloucester’s residents.”
Superintendent Safier said, “This is an excellent partnership as we want students to come to school healthy and ready to learn. Fire safety is part of the objectives of the Health Curriculum. We especially want our high school students to be ready to enter the world of adults able to practice good fire prevention.”
Gloucester firefighters will be delivering age-appropriate presentations in the elementary, middle and high school on key fire prevention and survival topics. It will conclude with every student being asked to develop a home escape plan. The elementary school with the most completed home escape plans will get visit to their school from the Gloucester Fire Department and they may join them for lunch in their cafeteria. At the high school and middle school a raffle will be held for students to win prizes that have been graciously donated by local businesses and dinner with firefighters at the fire house.
In Massachusetts, the Student Awareness of Fire Education Program has been in place for 18 years and in that time the average number of child fire deaths has dropped by 70%. Gloucester has participated in the S.A.F.E. Program in the past, and expects to apply for a grant next fiscal year to support and expand its fire education program.

For all the reasons Jim Dowd so entertainingly cites in yesterday’s rant, plus the fact that your personal livelihood might actually depend on them, it’s that time of year to welcome tourists to Gloucester — and be grateful they’re coming.
The Gloucester Visitor’s Welcoming Center opens tomorrow at Stage Fort Park and Kathie Gilson, who runs it, has invited everyone who’s business supports Gloucester’s visitor economy to attend the opening reception at 5pm. Bring your brochures to display at the Visitor’s Welcoming Center for the season.

You might also want to check your listing on GloucesterMA.com, the City’s official visitor website. Everybody knows that the Web is the number 1 source of information for visitors and GloucesterMA.com is Gloucester’s #1 tourism website. It’s the top Google result for nearly every Gloucester tourism related phrase (hotels, inns, restaurants, etc.) and many local businesses report that GloucesterMA.com is their number 1 source of referrals after Google. It’s a free service offered by the City, so you might as well take advantage of it. If you need any changes to your listing, or it’s not there or you notice anything that’s incorrect, click here and explain the situation. It will be taken care of quickly.
