Crimson-eyed Rose Mallow Growing at Niles Pond
Please Don’t Pick the Wildflowers ~ Thank you!
Hibiscus moscheutos, known by many common names including Swamp Rose Mallow, Swamp Mallow, Eastern Rose Mallow, and my favorite, Crimson-eyed Rose Mallow, is a wonderful perennial garden plant and when found in nature, is a wetland plant that can grow in great drifts. Hummingbirds and bees drink nectar from mallows. The flowers of Hibiscus moscheutos range is shades from pure white to deepest rose, and some have a brilliant magenta eye.
Rose Mallow was planted widely at the beginning of the previous centurey, when an awaresness developed about conserving our North American native wildflowers. You would be hard pressed perusing a home and garden publication from that era and not find a lovely illustration of Crimson-eyed Rose Mallow.
Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Can you feel it? People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year. It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do. Take today for instance. Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets. See the full live music schedule here.
Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria. Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!
See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line with his special guest Lydia Warren 8.22.2013. 8:30-11:30

Dave says,
The heat’s on high this week as we cave in to our animal desires with the welcome addition of a new musician to our Augean Stables: Ms. Lydia Warren. This gal, tender as an egg from a bluebird’s nest, absolutely wrecked the joint at the Glou. Blues Fest a coupla weeks ago. She plays scorching glitar, and sings like an angel. You gotta czech this out. She blew me away!
Worse, I’ve got the hottest guitarist on the Boston scene, Mr. Chris “Stovall” Brown, to back her up. And, completing the circuit, Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett is gonna keep time for us. I need a doctor….if you miss this, you should get burial insurance.

Gloucester’s First Bike Lanes
Fred Bodin Submits-
I first noticed the Bike Lane on Rogers Street while driving home Saturday night after the Block Party. Today, I saw it again on Stacy Boulevard while leaving the Waterfront Festival. It runs the entire length of the Boulevard, but not on all of Rogers Street. I’m not used to dealing with innovation, except for a few trips thru Boston. I automatically drove my car in between the center line and the Bike Lane line. I think it’s a great idea.

Tuffy’s Daughter Degelis From Lobster Girl To COO. Is there Anything She Can’t Do?
Degelis Tufts took a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City this August to roll up her sleeves and get busy banding on a father-daughter lobstering trip aboard the Degelyse. This is nothing new to Degelis, as she’s been playing with lobsters since she was a baby and has been helping dad on the boat since age 6.
Degelis is now the COO of TopShelf Clothes, a (free!) online personal shopper for women. TopShelf has a team of personal stylists finding the items you need from across the top online retailers, lets you vote on their suggestions with a click of a button, and automatically creates an online closet for you based on past purchases. Joe Thomas & Memory Layne on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tonight

photo Sheila Roberts Orlando
Giuseppe’s gets it. They know how to blend food and music into an entertaining evening out for all ages.
Earlier this year they partnered with T Max, editor of The Noise Magazine to feature local singers and songwriters in what became a very popular Singer – Songwriter Shuffle.
Beginning tonight at 6:30pm, Giuseppe’s owners, Joe Thomas and Memory Layne are Allen’s guests on his Cape Ann TV show Local Music Seen with Allen Estes on cable channel 12. The show airs again on Friday at 1pm, and Sunday at 6pm. For all of you FOBs, who don’t live in Gloucester, you can now watch Local Music Seen and other shows on Cape Ann TV’s wicked cool on-line streaming service here.
If you do live here, bop on down to Giuseppe’s after the show and see rising stars Renee & Joe perform live at 7pm. Then you can head over to the Rhumb Line and catch Allen with special guests, The Backwoods Ramblers later in the evening.
And tomorrow, live music in Gloucester starts at 1pm. See the complete live music schedule here.
All of us are looking forward to a few weeks from now when Giuseppe’s fires up their Singer/Songwriter Shuffle for an exciting new season. Stay tuned . . .
15 Years Of Gloucester Cyclocross
In early May, the chances of our event taking place in Gloucester were close to zero. All efforts ceased and we focused 100% on two other venues.
What a turnaround in the past month. We have received the support of the Mayor, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Open Space & Recreation Committee, racers, teams, and Gloucester citizens. Despite a delayed start to the permit process, we submitted our applications and have received the approval of the Planning & Development Committee (P&D). We now have one final obstacle.
On Tuesday, August 27th, we’ll attend a public hearing in front of the full City Council. While I’m extremely hopeful, this is where we could really use the help of the community. If you support the Gran Prix of Gloucester, please consider showing your support at this public hearing.
A few weeks ago, over 75 supporters came to Stage Fort Park for the P&D site visit in a non-participatory role. Next week, the public WILL have the opportunity to speak and we hope to hear from you.
We humbly ask, if you support GP Gloucester, please come to Gloucester City Hall on Tuesday the 27th and voice your support.

Maplewood Car Wash – a great experience
At the Gloucester block parties this summer, I have come across the table for Maplewood Car Wash (50 Maplewood Ave). I hate to admit it, but I hadn’t washed the car since I moved to Gloucester 2 years ago, and hadn’t vacuumed it in at least a year. I am a terrible procrastinator. In fact, I got the car second hand from a family member, and we hadn’t had it professionally cleaned then either, so there was a desperate need! I saw the Maplewood Car Wash booth as a reminder as an opportunity to clean up… So, I made an appointment for this past Monday for a thorough “bumper to bumper” interior and exterior cleaning. Here are the results:
When I saw it in the parking lot, I literally asked myself if this was really my car, it looks so good! This is Eduardo, one of the workers who made my car look so good:
Andrew (I believe he is the manager?) was very courteous and professional, as were the other people I dealt with. The bumper-to-bumper job costs $130, and it was well worth it.

On The Rails at Maritime Gloucester
On The Rails at Maritime Gloucester
Bill O’Connor Submits-
Hi Joey,
On our last visit to Maritime Gloucester, there was lots of activity going on. The Building Center had a crew installing a new specimen on cabinet in the lab building (made of recycled pieces fromtheir old kitchen display), and Jay McLauchlin was rounding the edges of the new handrails on the wharf with a router. The whole place is going to look awesome for the Schooner Festival this year!
Enjoy!

Neighborhood Apothecary at a new address
Remember the Neighborhood Apothecary? I wrote about them not long ago when I discovered them at the block party. At the time, you sort of had to follow a map or a trail of bread crumbs to get to their store on the 4th floor of the Blackburn building. I saw the owner Meg and her associate Clint the other day, moving into new retail space on Pleasant Street!
Their new location is 17 Pleasant Street:
Through the gate, through the door on the left, down the stairs.
I bought some chamomile while I was there.
Meg was out, so Clint was manning the counter:
Clint’s name was inspired by Clint Eastwood, but he’s much nicer than Dirty Harry.
Stop by and check out their wares! They will be having a grand opening soon for the new location. I’ll post the info when it is available.

Thank You Jeff Amero and Crew At J&L Welding
So the massive push cart that saves Frankie and my backs from having to drag the thousands of lbs of lobsters and totes of bait around the dock had rotted out wheels. It happens- Saltwater’s a bitch, turns everything to shit.
So I asked Jeff from J and L Welding to take a look at our rusted out and broken wheels and order new ones to do the job. Only hitch is that this piece of equipment is vital to our operation and to be without it for even one full day would kill us. Brought the cart in at 7:40AM I got a call by 10:00AM to come pick it up, it had been all rehabbed before the boats would start hitting the dock with lobsters.
Huge huge thanks to Jeff and his crew at J and L welding. If you need this type of work done- do not hesitate to call them- 978-283-3388
