Joey,
Thanks so much for all the Gloucester Schooner Festival posts!  Maritime Gloucester can’t wait to host this weekend!

The festival was highlighted in Boston Globe Magazine on Sunday!
The Gloucester Schooner Festival was named best Festival/Fair of 2013 by Northshore Magazine! Be sure to visit this weekend and see over twenty schooners in Gloucester Harbor.  Northshore Magazine writes, “Given the long history of commercial and recreational boating in North Shore waters, it makes sense to recognize Gloucester’s Schooner Festival as the ultimate celebration of our maritime ties (in its 29th year, its glory is undeniable). With the goal of involving young people and supporting programs that get them on the water, all manner of vessels — new and old, large and small — take to the waters with sails flying high.”
Sail on a visiting schooner this weekend during the Gloucester Schooner Festival! Schooner Roseway, Schooner Virginia, and Schooner Tyrone will all be offering special sails out of Maritime Gloucester. You can also sail Schooner Ardelle, the flagship of Maritime Gloucester, for a great view of visiting schooners. Tickets are selling fast, so reserve a spot today!

Hi Joey,

The Adventure had her 2nd shakedown sail on Saturday. Donny King was kind enough t o take me out his Scotia Girl so I could take some pictures. Here are a few, plus a couple from onboard during the 1st shakedown sail.

Sail on BRILLIANT!

Mystic Seaport’s BRILLIANT will be berthed at Maritime Gloucester during the Schooner Festival.  This beautiful schooner is now skippered by Capt. Nicholas Alley, who took first place in a previous Gloucester Race while in command of VIRGINIA.  There are some great opportunities to sail on BRILLIANT with her very congenial crew.  At the moment there is space for a Gloucester-Boston sail after the Schooner Festival.  Check it out here

Aboard Schooner Adventure; Sea Trial August 24, 2013

Thanks to a kind invitation by FOB Greg Bover and the good folks at Gloucester Adventure, I had the opportunity to film Adventure’s second sea trial prior to her participation in the Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend.

In the opinion of all on board, she is a sound vessel with an outstanding captain and crew. All Gloucester should be proud of Adventure as she embarks upon her career as our flagship and latest (and oldest) member of the growing Gloucester schooner fleet.

If someone had told me twenty years ago that my life’s passion would be dedicated to the field of education, I would have probably burst into laughter. In fact, I got most of the way through college with no intention to work with children. I didn’t really have any experience with kids. I had one older sibling, many older cousins, and two failed attempts at babysitting under my belt. I double majored in History and Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico, and planned to apply to law school. As a young, idealistic college student, I imagined myself defending the rights of others – a female Atticus Finch. It seemed like a great plan as far as I was concerned – until one of my classmates told me about a part-time job teaching English to students from other countries. And so the educator spark in me was ignited.

In the last fifteen years, I have earned a Master’s Degree, a PhD, and experienced the best job ever: teaching little kids, teenagers, and adults. To learn more about my background and why I want to serve on our School Committee, read on…  kimberlyforkids

Jim Dowd on the new bike lanes:

0

You see this symbol on my bike helmet above? Anyone who’s not 12 know what it is? Anyone?

original

It’s the Rebel Alliance Starbird symbol from Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Fighter helmet from the first two Star Wars movies (the good ones).

You know why I have that on there? Besides the fact that I’m such a massive dweeb I make Leonard from Big Bang Theory look like Keith Richards by comparison? Because riding a bike in Gloucester is not unlike the trench run at the end of that film. Here you are, screaming along trying to keep up with traffic and there are doors and drunks and moms on phones. You’ve all heard me talk about this before: Riding a bike in Gloucester is like attacking an armored battle station in your tiny X-wing. And I never even had a Beggar’s Canyon back home to practice in.

The newly installed bike lanes are a big Wampa step in the right direction. The biggest thing they do, in my opinion, is say, “Hey, drivers: it’s cool for bikes to be here!” That’s literally the most important thing. I’ll look out for the obstacles, the potholes, the people pulling out of Cruiseport with their eyes on the phone and not the road (I’m looking at you here, mayor of Fitchburg), staggering dudes without shirts on, all that. What I need is for the intentionally hostile drivers to at least know that we exist and that it’s cool for us to be in the road and to tone down the road rage a few dozen notches.

You’d perhaps be surprised how often people yell shit like “Get out of the road!” or “Get out of the frikin way!” or “Your brother owes me fifty bucks!” (That may be a separate issue, actually). I see comments all the time about how “That road wasn’t designed for bikes” or my favorite generalization, “Roads” (as in all roads) “were not designed for bikes”. I guess that’s technically true, the Romans probably did not have cyclists in mind when they laid the first stones on the Via Apppia in 312 B.C. but most of our roads were not “designed” for cars either. It’s up to us what mix of uses we want to put our roads to.

So the bike lanes remind us that the roads are a public resource; they do not belong to any one group of users. We have trucks, we have cars, and we have busses and Tommy the Trolley or whatever and bikes. Everybody needs to learn to get along because auto use in this country is actually declining. People are seeking alternate forms of transportation for a variety of reasons, and bikes are one of the alternatives folks are turning to. You’ll be seeing more of them, not less in the coming years. Maybe you’ll come join us?

So Huzzah to bike lanes and a shout-out to Heidi Wakeman and Steve Winslow for making it happen. And a second Huzzah to all the folks out there who let me in, let me cross, slow down and generally drive safe around cyclists. One of the things I think we all love about this town is that we don’t have a lot of lights or signs; we all just sort of let each other go with a wave so we can all get where we’re going. “Bearing our neighbor’s burden within reason” as they say. Gloucester may get trashed in the media, but we know how to take care of each other and that’s a shit-ton more than I can say for most places in 21st century America.

You know what? Mos Eisley also got a bad rap. That place had a kickin’ bar scene.

A Few Pics From the Book Club @ Duckworth’s

Hey Joey,

I thought you might like to check out a few pics from this month’s book club event at Duckworth’s Bistrot. We had a great time with Gloucester born and raised author Anna Solomon as she discussed Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels with a fantastic group of folks. Next up is the always thoughtful (and hilarious) Steve Almond discussing Stoner by John Williams on September 15. Tickets available here: http://www.easternpointlithouse.com/#!product/prd1/708038181/the-writer’s-book-club-%40-duckworth’s–sept.-15

The Four Legged Faithful tonight @ The Rhumb Line

flf plainAbout the Band

The Four Legged Faithful are a band made up of 4 ordinary men who all thrive on playing music together. Their aim is not to play traditional folk or bluegrass music, but instead to create beautiful, heart-felt, and genuine music using traditional folk/bluegrass instruments. They create a sound that is honest and reflects the band’s many musical influences from nearly all genres. All members sing; creating multiple combinations of 2, 3, and 4-part harmonies. All members write and sing songs about their thoughts, families, and the natural world that surrounds them. For a band without a drummer, The Four Legged Faithful achieve an incredible level of intensity using foot percussion and layered rhythms throughout every measure.

Drive by Samaritans and Good Eggs on Main Street

Fred Bodin Submits-

Just after 7 pm tonight (8/20/13), two young ladies came into my gallery to look around after out dining together at Jalapeños next door. On their way out, they stopped at the counter and one of them asked if I wrote the Drive by Shooting post for GMG. Yes I did, and one of them said it was her sister who did the shooting. Wow! After talking about the Drive by Shooting experience for a few minutes, they left. Seconds later, they returned and said: “We found a lot of money scattered on the sidewalk outside.” So we went all of ten feet from my door and I scooped up $106. They saw who dropped it and noticed that he went into Jalapeños. I went into the restaurant with the two girls and we searched for a man in his 30’s wearing a blue shirt and shorts. Good detective work, but no luck. I told the hostess (owner Alex’s daughter) to send the person looking for the cash over to the galley. If he doesn’t come in by 8:30 or so, I’ll bring it to the 24/7 lost and found, the Gloucester Police Department.

I took a photo of these two friends, and got the left to rights. On the left is Page Harmon, sister of the Drive by Shooter, and on the right in front of the Gloucester flag is Baylee Kirk, both from East Gloucester. Bailee’s parents are journalist Bill Kirk and Carolyn Kirk. Carolyn is the Mayor of the City of Gloucester. It was a good experience for the three of us, and a lesson in karma: Always do the right thing. Tomorrow I’ll drop off an envelope to the GPD with five $20 bills, a five, a single, with my business card. Karma is coming our way! Gloucester.

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

Today Kathy looks at Dried and Salted Cod.

Turner Seafoods follows an old family recipe using salt cod for fish cakes from grandmother Nana Turner of St. John’s Newfoundland. Chef Yale Woodson and Olga Sola talk about the production in Melrose for their Gloucester fish market. http://www.turners-seafood.com/

 From wikipedia:

The production of salt cod dates back at least 500 years, to the time of the European discoveries of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. When explorer Jacques Cartier ‘discovered’ the mouth of the St. Laurence River in what is now Canada and claimed it for France, he noted the presence of a thousand Basque boats fishing for cod. More

Blue Shark Off Gloucester/Rockport Video

Kellen O’Maley shares with Good Morning Gloucester

We hooked up on a few Blue sharks this past week about 10 miles off of Rockport. Although we were in search of Bluefin Tuna, the sharks brought some excitement as Tuna fishing can become quite boring. Here is a clip of one of the sharks as it neared the boat and eventually snapped off to swim free (it looks better if you change the setting to HD720). The good news is there is plenty of feed out on the banks to keep these guys away from Good Harbor Beach! This same day we also heard Dave Jewell of http://ladyjfishingcharters.com  hooked up on a bigger Blue shark that looked to be over 350 lbs!
