Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week we visit with Al Bezanson who recalls his days working at Gorton’s Seafoods in Gloucester. As an engineer he worked on ways to improve their products, specifically the fish cakes. Al moors his schooner Green Dragon in Smith Cove and is enjoying his summer stay at Rocky Neck’s Accommodations, where we shot this video.

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting

By Gail McCarthyStaff Writer

The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.

He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.

Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.

Paula Cole’s Noise Interview is a MUST READ for every musician and music fan!

Yesterday we were treated to one of our new monthly pleasures: T Max dropped off a  few copies of the September issue of The Noise Magazine.  It’s one of the perks of living in Magnolia, which, since T Max moved to Gloucester, happens to be right on his delivery route as he takes The Noise to Beverly, Salem, and on down to Boston.

This is an especially good issue, the highlight of which is Eric Baylies’ wonderful interview with Grammy-winner and Rockport native Paula Cole.  Paula invites us into her creative process and shares her profound wisdom on the music business in one of the most insightful artist interviews since John Lennon’s 1980 Playboy interview.  Paula gives us too many wonderful quotes to list here.  You’ll just have to read the article.  Kudos to Eric for asking all the right questions, to T Max for printing the whole thing and especially to Paula for allowing herself to be honest, personal and profound in print, without so much as a care in the world for the usual hype and meticulous grooming that usually attends a new CD release from a major star, such as her.

Among many other gems in this issue are two exceedingly entertaining reviews by T Max of live music at Beverly’s Block parties and the Big Shot of Inge Berge by Sheila Roberts Orlando, which proves that Inge is one of Gloucester’s most creative artists!

Adventure Returns, 1988

Fred Bodin Submits-

Schooner Adventure came home to Gloucester in 1988, twenty five years ago. The arrival was a grand event, and included the USCG, many private boats, and a blimp. Celebrations continued after she docked. The honoring of Adventure will commence again this weekend. She is the host and star of the visiting schooners.

No, that’s not the Hindenburg in the sky, it’s the Goodyear Blimp! This photo got me started on schooner photography. They are so graceful and beautiful. That’s John McNiff’s Whaler behind Adventure. This was a significant moment in Gloucester schooner history. What a day! A few years later, she was painted in her original  “fisherman’s black.”

The Always Super Delicious Passports Restaurant Lunch

Passports Pulled Pork Sandwich ©Kim Smith 2013

Lunch at Passports is always a treat. Daughter Liv had the very filling and super yummy pulled pork sandwich. I had the wonderfully tasty and seafood-rich Adriatic stew. I only had my iPhone with me and didn’t get a great snapshot of our waitress Laila, but she was wonderful as well. Thanks Laila and Eric for the fabulous lunch!

Tuna, Truro, Magnolia, and the Fish Stick

Fred Bodin Submits-

From the (Martha’s) Vinyard Gazette, circa 1951: ” John Sweek of Queen’s, NYC, secretary to a magistrate in his home city, is shown at left with his companions, Robert Collinson from Provincetown and John Kohr of Magnolia, with three tuna caught on rod and reel near the Truro shore in Provincetown Harbor. The fishermen had their best luck with blue atom plugs and squid as bait.” These are definitely surf casting fishermen. Just look at the bare feet, rolled up trousers, and 4 wheel drive Jeep.

TruroTunaWm

I met John Kohr and his wife Esther (1914–2007) while she and I worked at Endicott College in Beverly. The was something about her that was vaguely aristocratic, but in an old fashioned gracious American way. I now know that she grew up in Provincetown and Truro. In fact, her ship captain uncle sailed in the China Trade, and another ancestor commanded a ship for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and built the oldest still standing house in Truro. Previous ancestors came here on the Mayflower and established Truro. Husband John Kohr (1911–1999) was a graduate of MIT and invented an amazing product while he worked for Gorton’s: The Fish Stick!

Hi Joey, Here rare photos from the Adventures first 2 shakedown sails. Captain Graham McKay was at the helm for both trips. Ryan Graham was the mate. The people hauling on the lines are hoisting the main sail, which sits atop a 65 ft boom, is 2100 square feet. The 4 sails total 5,500 square feet. Many thanks to Donny King who welcomed me aboard the Scotia Girl to capture the shots of the Adventure under way. The final shot was taken from Stage Fort Park with the Adventure taking down her sails. Mary Barker

Drive by Samaritans Strike Again!

Fred Bodin submits-

Drive by Samaritans Strike Again!

The first part of this installment can be found here

This morning at 10 am the two Samaritans and their mothers came to my gallery to claim their rewards for finding $106 on Main Street and, with my assistance, it was returned to the owner. On the left are Paige and her mom Tracey Harmon, and on the right is Baylee with mom Mayor Carolyn Kirk. But the story of good deeds by these young ladies is not over – read on.

The envelopes are open, and the proud 13 year olds each display their $12.50 rewards.

Paige and Baylee with their small fortunes of reward money. What are they going to do with it? They told me they’re going straight to CVS, and spend it on toys to give to the Boston Children’s Hospital. Still making that good karma – that’s just who they are. You gotta love it!

Video: Sunset Sail Aboard the Gorgeous Schooner Thomas E. Lannon

Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.

I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun.  I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!

Tommy O From The Yankee Fleet Outfits Captain Pete Mondello With A Pair Of Outriggers

Captain Pete has been having some severe a type of vertigo that makes him so dizzy it takes him to his knees.  In the past couple weeks he’s had to come in from fishing a bunch of times.

So what does Tommy O do?  Hand crafts Pete his very own set of stabilizing outriggers right down to the cables with the birds hanging off the ends.

Up-close action on a schooner – catch a ride

Al Bezanson writes-

You can ride on a schooner in Gloucester on Labor Day weekend and be part of the action.  Or you can spend +++ the price of  a schooner ticket to attend a major league ball game and watch highly-paid athletes with your binoculars.  Folks that work aboard these schooners are the real deal, with great skills, doing what they love for little or no pay.

Here you see the fors’l being furled on ADVENTURE following last Saturday’s shakedown sail.

Tickets here on various schooners  http://gloucesterschoonerfestival.net/?p=408
