No Fishing from Bridge, circa 1940

The Railroad Bridge, which crosses the Annisquam River in Gloucester, was a crucial link to the mainland, carrying visitors, goods. The Eastern Railroad built the Gloucester line in 1847, and it was extended to Rockport in 1861. These fishermen seem to be onto the fish, but even today, it's not a safe place to fish from.

Bluefin Blowout, Baby!

As always, this is a legitimate tuna tournament, with action not to be missed.

In fact, it is “New England’s Premier Giant Bluefin Tuna Tournament” and it does not disappoint.

Great work done by the organizers, the sponsors, the boat crews, and everyone else involved.

A great chance to peak inside what this side of the fishing industry can be like!

The crowd was excited, the competition was on…yet friendly, the Orion was up to their usual antics all “Funky Red Barn” style, and the fish were…well, BIG.

A heartfelt moment of silence for past “Weigh Master”, Mark Godfried (whom I worked for and loved), was a really nice touch.

To kick-off this year’s tournament, Day #1 ended with The Miss Fern bringing in a fish that weighed 805 pounds.  It was immediately followed by Tuna.com’s 913 pounder.  Yikes!

Congratulations to all!    Check out tournament info here

Monarchs at the HarborWalk Zinnia Patch!

Monarch Butterfly Gloucester HarborWalk ©Kim Smith 2014This past week while I am home enjoying a staycation (why would anyone ever want to leave Gloucester during the summer?), I have been working on HarborWalk butterfly garden improvements, alongside some outstandingly helpful volunteers. Imagine our delight when a beautiful Mama Monarch flew on the secene. After nectaring from the zinnias, I was hoping she would deposit her eggs on the Marsh Milkweed, strategically planted next to the nectar-rich zinnias, but no, not on her day’s agenda.

Many Hands Make Light Work ~ If you would like to join the Friends of the HarborWalk volunteers, please email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. You don’t need to be an expert gardener to join us; on the job-training is provided. We also need sweepers, trash-picker-uppers, and weedwhackers!

I understand from Matt Coogan, Gloucester’s Community Development Senior Planner, that there were over 800 people attending the free Summer Cinema on Wednesday night!! This coming Wednesday, a showing of Goonines is scheduled. I hope to see you there!

Where can you get Breakfast Boats? George’s Coffee Shop That’s Where!

I feel like every time I do a post about breakfast in Gloucester I have to attach the “We are so blessed to have so many awesome breakfast joints in Gloucester” disclaimer but there are a couple that are just straight up special and have been executing perfectly for decades.  George’s is one of the elite of the elite in town.  If you haven’t gone there recently you’re really missing out.  nephew BJ is monster fan of the breakfast boats shown here-

We only do this once a year, folks, so… please don’t miss it!  Sitting on the deck of
the Thomas E. Lannon is perhaps the most elegant way to appreciate the amazing
and beautiful city in which we live.  Actually, there always seems to be people from
other parts of the country (and world) on board, taking it all in for the very first
time.  We find ourselves looking at familiar waters through fresh eyes as we hear
their stories from points beyond the island.  But it’s Tommy, Kay and the rest of the
Ellis crew who are the true stars of the show.  So smooth and professional, you can
hardly tell there’s serious work being done all around you – until you volunteer to
help hoist a sail, that is!
Thursday, July 31st

Dreamsteering

DreamsteeringRecently I joined a wonderful group of ukelists. Joe Cardozza is the Ukleadies simply amazing teacher. Everyone knows Joe from his musical partnership with RENEE and JOE MUSIC and from the Bandit Kings, but did you also know that he gives private music lessons in the comfort of your own home? For more information about Cardoza Music, visit Joe’s website here.

You can download RENEE and JOE’s first full length studio recording, Dreamsteering, here. I am a fan of Renee’s singing and so far, my favoirte track is their beautiful song “Molly,” but I haven’t yet had a chance to listen to the entire album of songs.

Dreamsteering was recorded in Gloucester at Bang a Song Studio, and was engineered and mixed by Tony Goddess and Jen Morrison.

New Live Henri Smith CD to be released at Celebrate Gloucester Aug 29

HenriPoster_600When Henri Smith brings New Orleans Friends & Flavours, featuring Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell to Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion on August 29, he’ll be helping to raise money for the Cape Ann YMCA — and he’ll release his new live CD recorded at The Larcom Theatre last March.

This will be Henri’s first live CD and it features stellar guests, including Grammy-winners Charles Neville and Amadee Castenell along with young, rising stars — all brought together by Henri Smith, one of the country’s premier band leaders.

Recorded and mixed by Bill Winn (whose award-winning credits include Whitney Houston and Herbie Hancock among many others), this CD is destined to become a classic — and you can get yours signed at the concert.

Henri Smith concerts have been selling out, so you probably shouldn’t procrastinate.

Get your tickets now (right here) and then you can relax the rest of the summer.
