Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar No. 56!

The 56th annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar begins at 9 am and is open until 5 pm Thursday, August 7th. It continues again on Friday the 8th and Saturday the 9th. Main Street in Downtown Gloucester is closed to all vehicles, and vendors of all types line the street from Prospect Street to Washington Street. Dance and musical performances take place all day. This is a great event for children and for grown up-bargain hunters. Enjoy! Painting by "Painter Barb," my sister.

Walking Dead’s New Set?

Nope, it’s just a typical Friday at the Market Basket. Yep, this snap was taken on FRIDAY! What normally looks like a mad dash for the latest Cabbage Patch Kids release (my age revieled) with folks jamming up supplies for the beach and the weekend cookouts, looks more like an abandoned prison about to run over by zombies.

This thing has a spooky feel at this point. (you know your trying to see who’s vehicles those are)

I guess that’s why it’s singular in the name…Basket.

Let’s hope these hard working and committed folks get their life and jobs back before it’s too late. And let’s hope it’s before it’s starts to look like Fuller, and we start calling it Ghetto Basket.

GIGGLES GLOSTA ~ The Nasty Show featuring Lenny Clarke, Tony V, Bobby Slayton and Christine Hurley

Hello Joey and Kim,

Would you please post the following to GMG for the upcoming Giggles Glosta this Sunday, 8/10? We are getting a great crowd and would love to fill the house 🙂

Join us on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 7pm at the Cape Ann Community Cinema for the next Giggles Glosta LIVE Comedy Night. Our third show welcomes veteran Boston stand-up Lenny Clarke to headline the “Nasty Show”, featuring legendary comedian Tony V, the “Armed and Dangerous” comic Bobby Slayton (The Pitbull of Comedy), and the “versatile humorist” Christine Hurley. Bobby Slayton (“Mind of a Married Man”), Tony V (“The Heat”) and Lenny Clarke (“Rescue Me”) are nationally known actors as well as long-time comedians. This show is not for the mild and the meek.

Tickets for these shows are $25 general admission, $22.50 for Cinema Members. Advance ticket purchases are recommended. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.CapeAnnCinema.com.

Many thanks!
Anne-Marie

Thank You Community for Sharing ~ Buona Fiesta is a Hit!

Thank you with the deepest appreciation and greatest gratitude to everyone who is helping to make Buona Fiesta! a success. We are receiving beautiful thank you notes from as far aways as Terrasini, Rome, Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. Buona Fiesta! has received over a thousand views in less than a week, which is very gratifying and encouraging, especially in light of the fact that this short film is part of a larger documentary project.

Buona Fiesta! is long, at 17 minutes, for an internet film, and Vimeo is more strict about recording number of views. For example, when a video or film is clicked on YouTube, it is instantly recorded as a view. On Vimeo, the viewer must watch all the way through to the end, or nearly all the way through, for the view to be recorded. The fact that we have so many viewing the film on Vimeo is a true measure of interest.

Thank you to all who work so hard to make Saint Peter’s Fiesta a wonderful and positive event to be shared by all in the community. My most heartfelt thanks again to everyone who appears in the film.

If you enjoyed seeing Buona Fiesta! please copy, paste, and share one of these links with your friends, Facebook friends, and Twitter friends. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

Great musicians like Johnny Winter and James Montgomery inspire each other

You may know that legendary blues man James Montgomery toured the world for 5 years as featured member of Johnny Winter’s band, so Johnny’s recent passing hit James extra hard.

There’s a special bond among musicians (especially those who tour together) that’s hard to describe.  I’ve never been to war, but the guys I know who have describe a very similar bond among the people in their unit.

Rather than try to describe this bond, I figure the best way to convey it is by demonstrating through music.  Isn’t that what music does anyhow — convey a feeling or circumstance that’s impossible to describe?

Check out this video of James with The Johnny Winter Band in NYC.  Johnny & James don’t even look at each other, but they don’t have to.  Their musical bond holds it all together.

Perhaps, when he kicks off the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit Concert Series on August 22 at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion, we’ll get James to give us a taste of what it was like to tour with one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived!  Get your tickets NOW before they sell out like Johnny Winter at the Larcom in January.

If you’re willing to admit you’re going to the other cape, we’ll give you 2 free tickets to see Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary

Yup.  That’s right.  The other cape … On August 17, we’re presenting Peter Yarrow, of Peter Paul & Mary, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, MA on Martha’s Vineyard (which you get to via that other cape south of Boston).  Now you know how much we love Gloucester and Cape Ann, but we just couldn’t pass up this opportunity to work with the most legendary, multi-platinum, multi-Grammy winning folk-singer alive today.  So we’re venturing down to the other cape in a couple of weeks and figure that if anybody else from Cape Ann wants to go, we’ll put you on our special “Cape Ann” guest list.  Just leave a comment (with your name) on this post saying that you WILL BE GOING TO THE OTHER CAPE and we’ll put you on the guest list.

How many of you remember this?

Only 11 hours left to save $12 on Saturday’s Gloucester Blues Fest

What?  You don’t have your Blues Fest tickets yet?  This really is it folks.  Either get them NOW (right here) or wait until Saturday and pay $12.00 more.  Plus VIP may not be available at all on Saturday.  Here’s a little taste of Biscuit Miller, who was supposed to be at the Blues Fest last year, but had a scheduling conflict.  You don’t want to miss this high-energy guy!

Public Art: Two more Justin Desilva crosswalks downtown Gloucester

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey

As a reminder, there will be 20 temporary mixed media crosswalks throughout downtown by artist, Justin Desilva (Rhode Island School of Design alumnus). Each one features different HarborWalk story moment content.  Special thanks to Ben’s Paint.

Here’s the TS Eliot work along the intersection of Washington Street and Main by Tallys. The HarborWalk Story Moment marker #2 featuring TS Eliot is further down on the path by St. Peter’s and Cape Ann Brewing.

Comments included how the images change depending upon where and how one is looking (viewing the images through a lens, or viewfinder, from a distance, or up close).

This man thought it was fun to compare Justin’s ideas and process with Seurat and other Pointillists. The pug is unfazed by the new surface over his frequent path past Joan of Arc. The HarborWalk Joan of Arc story marker is #37. We’ll ask Justin about his ideas in another post.

Today’s intermittent rain slowed down the process, but not the speed of the cars! (Drivers fly past Joan of Arc heading to the Boulevard).

Thanks to Phyllis Cucuru for spending time with us and supplying a barney trash bag. Feeling fortunate that Café Sicillia, Building Center and other businesses are open on Sunday as we had to make a couple of trips. Desilva was planning to complete Hammond Castle and one in tribute to the Dory (on Main Street by Café Sicillia and Short and Main).

Here’s the Hammond Castle site BEFORE looking down to the Boulevard and out to the harbor. There’s also a photo looking back in the direction of the Joan of Arc memorial.

The 2013 Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge was a competitive, two-stage, open process established and administered by the Committee for the Arts (CFTA) on behalf of the City of Gloucester, and at the direction of Mayor Kirk and the City’s Community Development Department under Sarah Garcia. Funding for the purchase of public art was provided through a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Seaport Advisory Council. The awards reflect discussions, community development, planning and determination to remember and work towards incorporating the creative arts broadly alongside other city efforts. 2014 Bluefin Blowout Day Two

In similar fashion to the tournament’s opening day, Day #2 of this year’s Bluefin Blowout also ended with two large Bluefin Tuna being landed.  The Osprey and the Tonno (Italian for tuna) both brought fish to the dock.

This year’s event was fantastic and it is safe to say, with such enthusiasm from organizers, participants, vendors, and spectators, it is only going to get better. I’m already looking forward to next year.  This tournament provides a new take on the already rich summer schedule that Cape Ann offers and I hope it continues for years to come!

In all, 53 boats were entered and four scored some pretty phenomenal bluefin tuna!

The Miss Fern’s fish weighed in at 805 pounds

Tuna.com tipped the charts with a 913 pounder

The Osprey’s fish showed 497 on the scale

and a 588 pound fish was brought in by The Tonno

Check out the event’s website for updated information.
