Skatewing Racks- Lobster Bait

When the bottom is activeand the tides are running, bait tends to get washed out of bait bags within lobster traps.  When a bait bag is empty it only stands to reason that the trap isn’t fishing.

Skate wing racks have membranes that run through them that hold up to strong tides much longer than soft bait like herring.

Here’s a whole buttload of skatewing racks on Toby’s boat, the Jupiter II.

Chickity Check It! Surfland Fishing Reports

image

Surfland Fishing Report comes from Surfland Bait and Tackle- Serving fishermen on Plum Island for 49 years. 28 Plum Island Boulevard, Newbury, MA 01951

October 20, Scads of bait, nothing chasing

Today is just a beautiful day, and the tide was right to take a morning trip and see if there was any life outside the Merrimack mouth or along the beach. At the jetties I was greeted by the welcome sign of 50 gannetts diving followed by their huge, rocket-style splashes. I moved up slowly and watched the fishfinder. I figured Gannetts=mackerel. The fishfinder lit up with a pretty steady stream of marks in the 12-25 foot depth. I jigged for a while, but no luck.

Now “fishfinders” and I have had a poor relationship in the past. I usually found little correlation between the “found” fish and real ones. This year, though, I bought a new (used) ride and it came with a nifty new Garmin 440s chartplotter. I usually fish the flats, so the real utility has always been depth to me, trying hard to avoid the sunken jetties. But this year I got outside a lot more and started using the sounder, fully expecting nothing from it.

Chickity Check It- ‘Intelligent clothing’ could stop boats when fishermen fall overboard

‘Intelligent clothing’ could stop boats when fishermen fall overboard

Working as a commercial fisherman is consistently ranked as one of the world’s most dangerous jobs. There are numerous ways in which they can end up in the water, with their shipmates (if they even have any) not noticing until it’s too late. That, or their boat can simply sink. In any case, fishermen need all the help they can get when it comes to safety, so a 14-group research consortium is developing “intelligent clothing” for them to wear at sea.

The three-year, 4 million Euro (approx. US$5,225,000) Safe@Sea project is being coordinated by Norway’s SINTEF research group, with Norwegian textile manufacturer Helly Hansen Pro as project manager. Other groups taking part in the project come from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Italy and the UK.

European fishermen have already expressed their needs to Safe@Sea, and the group is now working on addressing them. One of the most noteworthy features of the workwear is a proposed built-in wireless “dead man’s handle.” This will detect when its wearer has fallen overboard, and automatically kill the boat’s engine and activate a locator beacon – an essential feature for fishermen who work alone. Such devices are already available, although they have to be manually attached to clothing, so they could be forgotten or just not used.

Tuffy 5:09AM- Tuffy 4:10PM September 23,2010

Here’s a before and after picture of Tuffy after a day of lobstering.  We just finished lowering bait down onto his boat The Degelyse and took this picture.  Note the how clean his white shirt is in the before picture.

The reason his shirt is all dirty particularly in that spot under his arm is because that is where his oilskins don’t cover his shirt and the line from the pot trawls come up over the rails and with it sling mud and stuff all over the place as it comes through the hauling block.

153 Miles and and 18 Hour Steam Dave Jewell and Crew Land Two Fat Bluefin Tuna

Heading out a couple of days ago Dave and his crew head out for an 18 hour steam of  153 miles to catch themselves a nice pay day. One 800 lber and one 650 these tuna will command a nice price in Japan.

When Dave headed out he was a bit nervous because where they have to go to catch these fish it’s a long way out and there’s no place to run and hide if a storm whips up.  It is where there are warm ocean currents and cold water intersecting and it can produce nasty storms seemingly out of the blue and without much warning.

Tough! Richie Cassola Keeps Right On Hauling Lobster Gear With A Fish Hook Stuck In His Finger

It’s one thing to get a fish hook embedded into your finger and stop working to take the thing out but retired Beverly Policeman Richie Cassola strapped on a Band-Aid and kept on working ‘til the last pot was hauled.

That’s Toughness Folks!  He says he kept hauling because he knew we needed the lobsters.  I say it’s because he just loves being out on the water.
