Video- Meet The Gloucester Fishermen From Mark Burnett’s Expedition Impossible

For all of our Insider Expedition Impossible Coverage Click Here For Other Pictures and Videos

There is one thing I can guarantee you.  Just from knowing how much heart these guys have that you will never hear them utter the words “I quit” or “I can’t”.   You know how on these types of shows you see some dude who inevitably backs down from some challenge because they can’t take the heat?  I’d bet my life you will not see that from our boys from G-Town.

The show will premiere June 23 at 9PM on ABC.  Don’t forget to set your DVR to record the entire season!

Micah Dean, Brianmoc- Striper Assassins and Micah Demonstartes How He Makes His Lures

Brianmoc writes about Micah Dean’s Lures-

Once more a very nice fish on this lure. Not the biggest hit but this was one of 3 (32,36 and this) Run Micah down and buy one of his lures! I only own this one as its a test lure but will pick off one or two now. Odds he gets this lure back Zero! All lures are hand-turned and made on Cape Ann. First light has them or you can got his web site. This was test lures but now i think i will get two. http://www.micahdean.com/lures.htm

For Adam Bolonsky- The Fence And What It’s Used For On A Lobster Boat- The Degelyse

DSC04865

Many lobster boats have been installing these”fences” along the side of the boat where that is opposite the hauling station.

The fence has several purposes.  Real estate on a lobster boat is valuable, especially if the lobsterman is a real fisherman and not just a “pot hauler”.  A pot hauler is a lobsterman who simply sets his traps out in the same spots and doesn’t take the time to figure out what exactly the lobsters are doing and more importantly where they will show up next.  So the “pot hauler” sets his traps and goes back to the same spots over and over and doesn’t move the lobster traps around to try to be where the lobsters will show up next to be caught.

Lugging 100 traps from one area to another and resetting them and adjusting the lengths of the trawl lines for different fathoms is a lot of work and some “pot haulers” would just assume keep to a simple routine even though it doesn’t yield the best results.  To be fair, to move lots of traps from one area to a whole different area forces a lobsterman to either have a very large boat in which they can stack a ton of traps on and get lots of traps moved at one time or if they have smaller boats they have to make multiple trips because you just can’t put that many traps aboard due to a shortage of space.

This is where a fence can be beneficial in two ways.  All of the buoys and high-flyers and even barrels can be lashed on to the fence to save deck space for work.

Secondly when stacking traps high on the deck of the boat to get as many on as possible for moving them to a different area the fence helps to secure the traps.  So if the lobsterman feels that his catch has dropped off and he can catch more lobsters by moving to a different area he can move a bunch at one time and not worry about losing them overboard in windy or rough conditions.

Brianmoc Video To Get All You Striper Fishermen Horny

There are some big fish around as Brian shows in this video from May 22-

Brian writes-

42 inch 25+ pound fish Catch & Release Striped bass top water Fishing MA Crane Beach Ipswich Essex 5/22/11 not the first fish of the year but the biggest year. Started my spring fishing with some nice striped bass riding the outgoing tide. This big striper Came up and gulped the jumping minnow down on the first cast. What made this fun was I the rod. I used a 3/8oz – 1oz Temple fork salmon pole 8’6″ or TFO rod. This was not as fat as your avg late season fish but at 25p it was fun fight on light tackle and even bent the vmc hooks. What you are experiencing is a very good tool that if handled right a competent can land very large fish and make fishing for smaller fish that more fun!

Click the picture for just one page from Abby’s Gloucester Fishing 101 book which she produced for seARTS Partner With an Artist Program.  there will be many panels on eth walls here at our Dock- Captain Joe and Sons 95 East Main St Saturday from 10-2PM

Click on the picture below to see it full sized and learn some interesting facts for yourself.  I for one was astounded at the breakdown of how many of each different type of commercial fishing boats there were.  42% of the fleet are lobster boats, I had no idea, but this is just one of the factoids that Abby has broken down.  I think if you click on the picture you will get a sense of how easy she made it all to understand even though there is a ton of data in her book and in her exhibit, ANYONE could easily understand it.

-and this is all stuff that anyone that really takes pride in living in Gloucester or loves the fishing industry should know about.

So be sure to stop on by the dock Saturday 10-2PM

From The Site-

Ready to represent the storied Northeast fishing community of Gloucester, Gus (the captain), Nino (the engineer), and Joe (the deckhand) are three old-school Italian fishermen with small town values and big time hearts. Bonded together by blood (Gus and Nino are brothers, Joe is their cousin), they also work side-by-side as crewmates aboard the Captain Dominic. They believe their experience working together under pressure and routinely risking their lives while out at sea gives them an inherent "toughness" that will help them win. We’ll see if that’s the case.

BREAKING NEWS!!! WE CAN FINALLY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE IT! THE SANFILIPPO BOYS ARE ON MARK BURNETT’S EXPEDITION IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

This One Has Been Killing Me to Keep Under My Hat!!!!

Cast-

Gus Sanfilippo, 48, Gloucester, MA, fisherman
Nino Sanfilippo, 43, Gloucester, MA, fisherman
Joe Sanfilippo, 44, Gloucester, MA, fisherman

From Lynette Rice On Inside TV

ABC announces cast for ‘Expedition Impossible’ (Yep, its another amazing race coming to you in June!)

EXPEDITION-IMPOSSIBLE

Now that Mark Burnett is stealing some thunder away from American Idol with The Voice, is he now hoping to suck a little steam out of The Amazing Race?

You be the judge: Burnett is the man behind a new summer reality show for ABC dubbedExpedition Impossible, which features 13 teams of three players who will travel across deserts, mountains and rivers in the “exotic, fabled Kingdom of Morocco.” Fun? Each week a new stage of the expedition will be revealed to the competitors, who must find a way to work together to complete the trip. After 10 legs of competition, one team will cross the finish line.  Winners each receive $50,000, a Ford Explorer (nice product placement) and the privilege of never having to be called members of the Fab 3, Mom’s Army, or Grandpa’s Warriors ever again.

You think we’re kidding? Check out the monikers given to the 13 teams, which start the expedition on Tuesday, June 21. (My money is on the fishermen. Not so much for the gypsies):

Here’s Joe Sanfilippo and dory partner Marc Duval Getting In Some Early Season Dory Race Training

and after a hard fought Dory Race Win-

You may recognize Joe Sanfilippo from his interviews down at the dock, he is one of our lobstermen.  If not here he is in the RunGloucester Race-

Here’s Nino Sanfilippo Taking Home The 1998 Greasy Pole Flag-

Here is Joe Sanfilippo’s Chevy pick up truck.

Joe carries the normal stuff that skiff lobstermen carry in the back of their pick up trucks- fuel jugs, water jugs, covered fish totes to put bait in, some random buoys.

What you might also notice in the back of Joe’s truck are the dory oars and bench set up that he uses to train for the upcoming International Dory races. Joe is an avid rower and always a contender to represent Gloucester with his partner in the International Dory Races between Gloucester and Lunenburg.

He lobsters out of a 22 foot Eastern skiff after work and on weekends with his son Ryan.

The Margaret D Painted By Bill Hubbard

Good Morning Joey,
Joey,
Attached is my recent painting of another Dahlmer boat.  The Margaret D. was
launched in Dunkirk, NY and brought to Gloucester in 1910.  She was owned by my
Grandfather, Capt. John A. Dahlmer and christened by my mother, then 9yr.old Margaret
Dahlmer.  The Dahlmers lived on Rocky Neck then and later moved to Hovey Stree.
The Margaret D fished mostly as a gillnetter and later as a western-rigged
dragger.  My painting shows her returning from gillnetting, rounding Eastern
Point and about to pass Dog Bar Breakwater into the harbor.
She went ashore in fog on Salt Island in 1914 and was a total loss.  Grandfather
never began a trip on Good Friday or Friday 13th.
