Delicious nachos! @ the Dog Bar. No, I couldn’t finish it all. Well, not the nachos. Next time I’ll try the wings!
I know, it’s Lent… but I gave up other things.

The home page of today’s New York Times website features a story on Gloucester’s big debate about what to do with our waterfront (see story here).
Mayor Kirk is quoted a number of times promoting her vision of our port supporting both fishing and marine science, saying some of the $150 million Congress might appropriate should be used for “Programs that might attract those other uses that allow you to maintain a smaller fleet, and maintain an infrastructure for that fleet, and sit side by side.”
Everybody who’s seriously working on attracting marine science to Gloucester knows we need more than a port. We also need a thriving cultural economy in order to attract the workers that power marine science. Most of these workers are young, single PhDs who work very long hours and want to go out after work — and on weekends — for food, drink and music. They want to feel surrounded by culture. These people think they want to live in Cambridge. What they may not know is that Gloucester has a burgeoning cultural economy. Just look at all the live music available this weekend — and it’s supposed to be the dead of winter!
We’ve got momentum. But in order to grow a sustainable economy for Gloucester’s long-term, we have to grow our cultural economy a lot more. That’s where you come in. Think of Gloucester FIRST when planning what to do at night and on weekends. Not sure where to eat? Check out this HUGE list of restaurants. Check the live music schedule. You’ll likely find music for every taste. Want to enrich your life and the lives of your kids? Check out this impressive list of galleries, studios, museums, theatres, etc. Think you need to drive to the mall? STOP! Check this out and think again.
The secret to growing our cultural economy without losing our soul is to honor our past and embrace our future. That’s precisely what Fred Bodin does. His store honors our past by helping to keep the core of our history and culture alive. And now, he’s taken to filming the future. Here he is filming Jon Butcher with Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes at Jalapenos on Tuesday singing Sam Cooke’s classic Change is Gonna Come — how perfect it that! Boston rock star Jon Butcher moved to Gloucester. Let’s get out and support his decision, prove him right, boost our cultural economy and — most importantly — have a blast doing it!
After a hiatus Passports has their man back in the kitchen!
Happy Valentine’s Day…. Grandma Felicia always told me…
“The fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”…and she was right!
Who doesn’t love Nutella? It has been a favorite of mine for many years, and has been a staple in my family’s pantries for as far back as I can remember. I can still see it lined up neatly on the second shelf, and left -hand side, of the center aisle of my grandfathers’ Italian variety store, Pats Center Grocery. I still enjoy the snack my Nona Rose prepared for me during my many visits to the store after school. Back then, most children snacked on PB&J after school, but Italian kids…we snacked on Italian toast with Nutella!
Today Nutella is gaining popularity, and justifiable so! It’s rich, creamy, chocolate, nutty flavor is out of this world delicious all on its own…but did you know combined with 2 other simple ingredients you could make one of the most decadent desserts known to mankind…Talk about “the fastest way to a man’s heart” …It’s only 3 ingredients away!
Nutella Brownies with Nutella Butter Cream Frosting and Macerated Strawberries
1 cup Nutella Hazelnut spread
2 large eggs
10 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup Nutella
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoon Hershey coco powder
4 tablespoons heavy cream
1 pint fresh strawberries
½ cup sugar
1/4 cup Crème de Strawberry Fraise liquor
5 whole strawberries
1 remove stems from strawberries using a paring knife, discard stems
2 slice strawberries in half, then into thirds or fourths depending on the size of the strawberry
3 place prepared strawberries into a mixing bowl and add sugar
4 combine ¼ cup Crème de Strawberry Fraise liquor with sugar and strawberries, mix well, and let rest on counter 1 hour
Nutella Butter Cream Frosting Step-by-Step
1 combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, whip 2 minutes or until a creamy light textured frosting is formed
2 transfer frosting a pastry bag fitted with a star tip, reserve in refrigerator
Nutella Brownie Step-by-Step
1 combine all ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment
2 beat 1 minute on a medium speed (batter will be very thick)
3 generously grease and flour an 8×8 tart pan (I prefer to use Baker’s Joy non-stick spray)
4 using a rubber spatula, transfer and evenly spread batter
5 bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 25 minutes
6 remove from oven and cool 20 minute
7 remove the outer potion of the tart pan, and carful slide Nutella brownie onto a cake plate
8 using a pastry bag, fix 5 large dollops of Nutella frosting 1 inch from the outer edge of the brownie an, and top each dollop with 1 whole strawberry
9 pipe frosting around the top edge of the brownie
*Note~practice your pastry bag piping skills on a piece of wax paper
10 Slice into 5 equal slices, garnish with macerated strawberry
*Note~ alternative serving option… omit Nutella frosting and simply dust the top of the Nutella Brownie with a generous dusting of confectioners’ sugar, and garnish with whipped cream and a generous portion of macerated sliced strawberries
Enjoy!
Don’t worry, Valentine’s Day isn’t until Thursday, so you’ve got a full day and a half to keep on procrastinating. That’s what I do. If you remember, in this post I admitted that I spent Men’s Night looking at art, talking with friends and shopping for myself at the Cave while Vickie and John finished their Christmas shopping.
One reason I love the Cave is their idea of a Valentine’s Day Special is to offer it ON VALENTINE’S DAY. What a concept! No Preparation necessary, other than knowing about it, which is precisely why you read GMG, right?
So, on Thursday Glosta Joe’s and Roseanne’s Biscotti (another local business) will be at The Cave with free coffee & biscotti from 2-4pm. Buy a bag of coffee & win a chance at a beautiful gift basket full of coffee, chocolate, biscotti, mugs & more goodies from the table in the picture (plus cheese, of course).
That leaves you plenty of time to get ready for a night of live music at your choice of six venues in Gloucester (see the complete live music schedule here).
On Sunday afternoon, after baptizing five beautiful little babies, I ran out to do the Main Street chocolate tour! I Instagrammed my way from store to store, savoring the variety of chocolate offerings and getting heart stickers, signatures, and fancy checkmarks on my chocolate tour map. I didn’t win the gift certificate, but I had a great time!

Don’t miss the next one!
On Friday Feb. 1, Savour Wine and Cheese had a Beer and Cheese Pairing event! They had a variety of cheeses and beers available for tasting, and a sheet for you to mark what you thought were the best pairings. If you identified all the same pairings as the store’s expert, you got a gift certificate! Also, all the featured beers and cheese were on sale %20 off.
I stopped by at the beginning of the event. I didn’t try the beer because I had to drive right afterwards, but I did try the cheeses, which were all very tasty. I ended up buying a cheese called “Red Dragon”, a Welsh cheddar made with ale and mustard seeds – really good, with a distinctive flavor! Here are some photos I got before the crowd arrived (I only had time to be there at the beginning when there were only a couple of people, but more were arriving as I left).
Got a question about when the next wine dinner is happening? What their hours are going to be? Request a special dish?

Felicia and I are embarking on a project together. She has been very patient while I get all my “stuff ” done–work I need to accomplish during the winter months to make all landscape design and film projects flow more smoothly throughout the year. Look at this gorgeous Blueberry Lemon Tea Cake that she dropped off to help hurry me along. Believe me when I say, the cake tasted as scrumptious as it looks. Good thing I snapped a photo the minute it was brought in from the porch because when I returned to have a slice, the cake was half eaten. I am so looking forward to the publication of Felicia’s first cookbook!
Thank you Felicia!

I knew the Dodgeball rosters would get filled quickly and we would round out the 20 team brackets in a day or so.
Even though Ryan and Wood didn’t get a team submitted this year Bobby Ryan emailed to tell me that he still wanted to help sponsor the 2013 GMG/Farm Bar and Grill Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Tournament at Camp Spindrift.
That’s what you call being a community organization. that’s what you call class.
Ryan and Wood Beauport Vodka, Knockabout Gin, Folly Cove Rum. If you’re not drinking the highest quality spirits made locally or anywhere you’re doing a major disservice to your liver.
