This is a Call Out to all Masters in the Craft of Deviled Egg Making

deviled egg competition

It is time for the World Renowned GMG Biennial Deviled Egg Competition.  Those who would like to have their special deviled eggs included in the competition, be featured on the blog, and go down in deviled egg history,  just bring ‘em on Sunday, June 9th at 9:30am at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3.  This is way bigger than Topsfield Fair competition and doesn’t cost anything to enter.  I’m specifically calling out Kathy Chapman, Gigi Mederos/Stevie Black, Paul Frontiero, Sue Lovett and Joanne Souza – competitors in the last Deviled Egg Competition; but all those deft in the art of deviled egg making are welcome.  Beware, I did not enter my world famous deviled eggs in the last competition to give people a fair chance.  Not so this year – I’ll be there with my eggs and will show no mercy.

We’ve assembled a distinguished panel of experienced deviled egg competition judges, including: Joey C., Ed Collard, Paul Morrison, Adam Bolonsky and newcomer, Richard Rosenfeld.  If you missed our first GMG Deviled Egg Competition in 2011, or are not sure how the judging works, you can see the distinquished panel at work here https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2011/08/22/2011-good-morning-gloucester-deviled-egg-competition/

People who don’t like deviled eggs or are not entering into the competition, feel free to bring along something non-egg related to share for Mug Up.

Rubber Duck Review: Brothers Brew Coffee Shop, Rockport

“Who made these doughnuts?!” Rubber Duck and I were at the GMG Mug Up yesterday and I overheard that. I’m always on the make for a good doughnut. Let me digress, I gave up on eating a good doughnut about 35 years ago when people started making healthy, non-fat, sugar free, free range, gluten free, organic carob with oil-less sunshine sprout doughnuts.

So when I heard someone smacking their lips about a doughnut I tried them out.

Brothers Brew Doughnuts
Brothers Brew Doughnuts before the carnage.

I found my doughnut. A real doughnut. These doughnuts may have been made with all the above tasteless modern touchy feeley whole earth ingredients but somehow I doubt it. They exuded the real caloric loaded goodness you got from the pastry shop 30 years ago. As I sampled each flavor (the stuff I have to do to review food around here) the GMG regulars all told me of a secret. These doughnuts came from Brothers Brew in Rockport (If you can find Shalin Liu you’re there). But the real secret is they make a BACON DOUGHNUT!

So after picking up my Rockport Beach and Dump Sticker I swung in at 2PM today to check them out figuring no way would there be a bacon doughnut left from the morning. Because the other thing I was told is that the local contractors swarm the place in the early morning and eat all of the bacon doughnuts.

The place and the staff was nice as always (I’ve been there plenty of times and powered through a lot of tasty brownies, and lemon squares and other stuff but see above, I had given up on doughnuts.)

“One small Sin coffee to go and is there a chance a bacon doughnut is still here?” Yes?

Brothers Brew Bacon Doughnut!
Brothers Brew Bacon Doughnut!

Ran outside locked myself in the car and tried it out. Now that’s what I am talking about. I am moving to Rockport because of this pastry. Oh wait, I already have!

Brothers Brew On Facebook Look, their Facebook photo has bacon doughnuts on the left! Don’t tell me they have been making these for the past five years and no one told me.

A Preemptive Lobster Roll Refresher Course Before Anyone Gets All Crazy

I’m putting out this Lobster Roll PSA at the beginning of this lobster season to save chefs from making the horrible dastardly crimes against lobsterdom that so many make each year when they try to go all fancy with their lobster rolls.

One of our lobstermen, Dave Jewell’s boat was originally christened as the KISS.  Chuck Kersey built it and explained the meaning behind the name-

KISSKeep. It. Simple. Stupid.

What I will suggest to you is to take the name of the lobster boat which Chuck Kersey christened and apply it to your lobster rolls.

You don’t want to end up in the list of lobster roll debacles like the ones we’ve chronicled through the years here on GMG-

Special Events:

Farmer’s Market Community Picnic, Thursday, August 22 at 6 p.m. A chance for market goers to relax and socialize after the market closes. Shop for the picnic, or bring it from home. Stage Fort Park facilities include a number of grills. Entertainment includes live music by Happy Accidents and the popular Seafood Throwdown.

Vendors:

The 2013 Cape Ann Farmer’s Market will host more vendors than ever, 75 over the season, with 50 at any given market, making the market one of the largest in Massachusetts. Vendors are held to high standards, conforming to statewide farmer’s market guidelines and are all local. Along with an extensive array of fresh farm produce through-out the season, vendors will be selling baked goods, including gluten-free goodies and Lebanese flat bread, potted plants, herbs, gelato, fresh pasta, fish from Fisherman’s Wharf Seafood, local wines, roasted nuts, homemade cheese, and small-batch condiments. Back Yard Growers will be selling produce, eggs, and cut flowers. Prepared food for taking home or dining at the park include guacamole made on-site, tacos, burritos, lobster and crab rolls, grilled chicken and pulled pork, fresh homemade pizza, and savory and sweet tarts. Craft tents will offer organic soap, hand-made jewelry, pottery, hand-printed clothing, and art made from recycled materials. A complete list of vendors and weekly schedules may be found on www.capeannfarmersmarket.org.

The Farmers Market is at Stage Fort Park, overlooking beautiful Gloucester Harbor, through the courtesy of the City of Gloucester. Parking fees will be suspended during market hours, so plentiful free and ample parking will be available to shoppers. A CATA bus will run from the Rose Baker Center on Rogers Street to Stage Fort Park by reservation.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market is an independent non-profit, mission-based organization, started by and for the community of Cape Ann. It is funded by vendor fees, memberships, donations and grants. Cape Ann Farmers Market sponsors a used cookbook and garden book table, and will be selling tote bags, aprons, t-shirts and memberships, which include discounts at local restaurants and specialty stores every week to help offset the costs of running the market.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market accepts WIC coupons, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons, and SNAP/EBT, expanding its mission to bring healthy food to the entire community.

Other:  The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market includes a wellness tent where shoppers can relax with a therapeutic massage, and an education tent where local non-profits promote their organizations and services. Children’s activities are organized by Art Haven every week at 4:15 under the children’s tent. Stage Fort Park has a playground to entertain children while parents shop, and grills are available so families can stay for a picnic dinner or a concert at the bandshell.

Talent: Instead of piped-in supermarket Muzak, area musicians provide an original background soundtrack for shopping. Performances are during market hours, from 3:30 to 6:30, and feature sea shanties, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and world music over the course of the summer.

Rubber Duck PSA: Snapping Turtles on the March because it is June 1

It’s June First so if you take walks and are observant it is likely you will come upon a large leathery object laying at the side of the road or in your garden or making your dog excited. Congratulations, you have come upon a female snapping turtle who is slowly making her way uphill. Her brain is telling her she has to go up, then down just a little bit before she stops to scrape a hole and drop a bunch of ping pong ball eggs in the hole. She then crawls back to the pond and you won’t see her again for another year.

Rule 1: leave her be.

Rule 2: stay away. If you insist on taking a photo, stay well clear of the end that does not have a tail. That end has a set of jaws that can snap out and take a finger off with one crunch. Your dog should be smart enough to know that also includes dog noses but if she is a dumb dog, keep your dog away. A smart dog knows that a snapper has quite a long neck and can reach out just a little bit further than where a dumb dog puts her nose.

The turtle does not need saving. Just leave it. Snapping turtles are not endangered, every single pond in Massachusetts has one. They are only endangered by a well meaning person who wants to throw a blanket over it and put her back in the pond. That just upsets the turtle and she will have to return because she has these ping pong balls that need to go somewhere. If for some insane reason you think you have to move the turtle do not pick her up by her tail. You likely just dislocated her vertebrae and you may as well take her home and throw her in the soup pot.

If you have a neighbor who catches them and eats turtle soup and eats the eggs raw with a little soy sauce and chili, don’t freak out. Try one, you might like it. I’ll try anything once but that is one delicacy that is not on my bucket list.

Strawberry shortcake, plants, home-made preserves and pastries, antiques, and more!

Being sold this morning at St. Ann’s Church (70 Pleasant Street) as a fundraiser for Holy Family parish! Come get goodies for your garden and for your tastebuds!

Backyard Growers Program Surpasses Fundraising Goal!

Hey Joey – We rocked our fundraiser – could you post this on your blog? Thanks! Lara

Backyard Growers Program SURPASSES FUNDRAISING GOAL! Reaching $8,196!

We launched our campaign on May 15th with the goal of raising $7,500 in 30 days. On May 26th—just 12 days later!—we surpassed our goal at $8,196! 100 people donating $8,196 in 12 days! That comes out to an average of $683 per day!

That’s a lot of excitement and commitment around school gardens in Gloucester!

And why have we been so successful? Because of YOU! Here are some of the awesome people who have donated to our campaign—We have:

  • A zillion moms, dads and grandparents from every elementary school in the district! Thanks Stephanie O’Neil of West Parish and Melissa Gillis of Veterans’ and Marty & Michelle DelVecchio of East Gloucester just to name a few.
  • Community leaders like Julie LaFontaine of The Open Door and J Harrison of The Food Project.
  • Gloucester folk who believe in our work!—thanks Carol & Hugo Burnham, Carol Ackerman, and Mari Martin to name a few.
  • The Beeman School PTO, who has seen school gardens in action and know it’s a fabulous investment!
  • Civic-minded restaurant owners like Mark McDonough of Alchemy and Latitude 43 and Ken & Nicole Duckworth of Duckworth’s Bistrot.
  • Backyard Growers Program alumni like Phoebe Potts, Jane Cunningham, and Ann Olson.
  • Backyard Growers Program volunteer garden mentors, Chip Norton, Ann Lasman, and Suzanne Gosselin, who not only give their time, but support our fundraising campaign as well.

Some special thank yous to:

  • Douglas Orre of Rockport for his very generous matching dollar donation to our campaign.
  • All of my friends and family far and wide who believe in this work and who want to make it happen for Gloucester even though they don’t live here.
  • Nikki Bogin, our very own Cape Ann Farmers’ Market manager.
  • Jim Dowd, for all his time as my on-line-fundraising-coach-extraordinaire.
  • Stevens Brosnihan, for putting up with his wife throughout this fundraising campaign.
  • Willa and Beatrix Brosnihan for being the fabulous stars of our fundraising video.

The campaign is still open! It is still possible to make a donation! Anything we receive now helps us offset our costs, add bells and whistles to our original plans, and build upon the future sustainability of school gardens in Gloucester. What will we do with more funding?

  • Buy harvest totes and salad spinners for each school for our district-wide salad day.
  • Provide our FoodCorps Service Member with her very own supply budget for the after school program at Veterans’ School.
  • Truck in some fresh, gorgeous compost to top-off all the garden beds in the fall, and purchase next year’s seeds.
  • Create new, fabulous partnerships in the community.

Support us today! Click here to visit our fundraising video and campaign page!

Thank you!

It’s a rainy, two-show night in Gloucester

The way I look at it, a rainy night is perfect for music in one of Gloucester’s restaurants.  You’re not gonna fire up the grill.  Picnic on the beach?  Nope.  Dinner on the boat?  Fuggedaboutit.

Tonight you can catch two great shows.  Start at 7pm with local favorite John Rockwell featuring Dave Brown (one of the best guitarists alive today) at Alchemy (one of only 2 Gloucester restaurants with 4.5 stars on Yelp and Gloucester’s highest rated restaurant with music).

Then head over to Minglewood and rock out with Dennis Monagle, Ned Nugent and Mark Pelosi at 9pm.

Check out this video and you’ll know what I mean when I say rockin’

Finding treasures in The Cave

It’s been a while since I stopped by The Cave, but the other day I received an unexpected cash gift, so I decided to treat myself to something special! Laura always has good things in stock, so I headed over to her Main Street store.

There was someone in front of me in line, and as always I was impressed overhearing (sorry!) Laura help them pick out just the right assortment of cheeses based on flavor, texture, etc.  I ended up buying a nice bag of delicacies, including cheeses:

Some were things I’ve tried before, like blueberry honey – fantastic! – and the clothbound cheddar, which is a favorite of mine.  I also got two new items: First, cheddar with caramelized onions, which made a perfect companion for dinner (pork baked with onions, potatoes, and other veggies). Then, “Sir Francis” Bacon Chocolate Peanut Brittle!  No kidding! Bacon, chocolate, and peanut butter all together. How much goodness can you pack into one package? I had a piece in the evening. It is an amazing combination, but not the sort of thing I’d eat a lot of at once, as the flavors are fairly intense. (That’s good, because it’s not cheap!) I recommend it as a gift for your baconoholic friends!  In general, The Cave is a great place to find fine cheeses and other specialty foods. Laura will help you to find something just right!

So I went to this new joint in Beverly…

I don’t mind paying up for great food but the one thing that I will not endorse is paying up for good food but leaving hungry.

When you offer up a pasta dish for $22 and then serve barely 6 ounces of pasta I have a problem.  That’s $22 without salad, just the pasta dish.  Pasta- as in wheat flour and eggs.

I won’t be back.

I coulda ate a feast at Sista Felicia’s or gone to La Trattoria for better food at a lot less or my favorite Italian restaurant of all time- Vinny’s Superette in Somerville for half the dough and a hundred times better food.

Screw that place.  Never going back.

(our dining companions were great though)

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

We can enjoy this weekend with family and friends and delicious food, thanks to generations of men and women who fought, and many of whom died, to protect our freedom.  Thanks and prayers for all those who made the sacrifice of laying down their lives for us! May God grant peace and rest to them, and consolation and support to their families!

And for a delicious coffee roll from Mamie’s Kitchen…

SNEAK PREVIEW OF WHAT’S IN STORE:  In addition to pomegranate mimosas, deviled eggs, key lime and regular cheesecake, special unidentified Sister Felicia treat and Deb Schradieck’s egg and sausage casserole, some early treats got delivered this afternoon.  Anne and Bob Kennedy can’t be here tomorrow, so they dropped off a batch of her carmelized bacon with chocolate dipping sauce.  Uncle Marty Daley was in the house and got to try some.  I bet he’ll be back tomorrow for more.  Then Deb dropped off a batch of peanut butter and jelly muffins.  I had to try one,  just to make sure they were ok for everyone.  They are to die for.  BEWARE!  This Grand Opening Mug Up is not for dieters.

Sista Felicia’s Kitchen

Felicia, Craig, Hannah, and Pat

Yesterday afternoon I popped over to Felicia’s to find her and her fantastic team getting ready to launch Felicia’s Kickstarter program for her first cookbook. Craig Kimberley was shooting Felicia’s Kickstarter video and there was a mountain of food styled by Craig and Felicia, with Pat and Hannah providing assistance. Craig has created many cooking shows and he knew exactly how he wanted to film Felicia’s wonderful cooking demonstrations. It was lots of fun watching the two of them working at what they both love to do–Felicia cooking and Craig directing and shooting–and I was so glad to have had my camera with!
