Harold Burnham
Essex, Massachusetts, United States
Harold Burnham bears a family name that is virtually synonymous with Essex, the birthplace of approximately 4,000 schooners. He is the 28th Burnham to operate a shipyard in Essex since 1819, Growing up in a family of shipbuilders and a town where shipbuilding is a tradition handed down over the generations, Harold has learned the standards of the past and traditional techniques. Harold Burnham has carved out a place in history as a master boat designer, shipwright and sailmaker. Like his ancestors before him, Harold has a holistic approach to vessel design, construction and operation which makes him uniquely efficient. In addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in maritime transportation and fisheries from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, he draws upon extensive experience at sea, and of course, techniques learned in the famous shipyards of Essex. The author of this blog is Laurie Fullerton. Go to http://www.burnhamboatbuilding.com for a look at Harold’s website.

Trash The Dress Photo Shoot On Good Harbor Beach and a Quick Poll about Bangs

A photographer recently did a photo shoot on good Harbor Beach with a woman in a wedding dress.

Click the first picture to go check out their blog

Do bangs come and go?  I’m kinda curious because much like the mullet I thought that bangs were almost retro nowadays.  Unless I’m just out of touch.  Maybe I just haven’t paid attention and they’ve made a comeback.  like you see some of those rockabilly chicks that have the exaggerated bangs and that’s kinda cool, but I’m wondering if anyone intentionally still does the bang thing.

I’ll have to pay more attention when I venture away from the dock this morning.  Maybe I’ll do a quick mental survey at the coffee shop.  It could be that they never really went away I guess.  Poll time?

Mark O’Connell Has Questions About The Gale of 1862

Hello Joe,

I am planning on restoring a family cenotaph for a fisherman that went down to the sea during the Gale of February 24, 1862.

I care for 5 burial plots at St. Mary’s Cemetary in Newburyport. One of the stones… is an obelisk cut out of marble in 1862. On it reads Robert Hamilton, Drown at Sea, February 24, 186 . I decided to investigate professional cleaning and the re-cutting of the stone this summer, but since I couldn’t positively see the date of death, I began to investigate my great great grandfather’s death date.
Thank God I had a childhood memory… I used to play with a bookend of The Gloucester Fisherman. I remember my grandmother seeing me at play and then telling me that she was an invited guest at the unveiling of the Gloucester Fishermen’s Monument back when she was a young woman during the 1920’s.  She told me that apparently the paymaster had recorded my relatives’  name incorrectly in 1862.  Although the name is misspelled "Robert Hambleton" on the Fishermen’s Cenotaph she arranged for the paper transcript corrected  to the correct Robert Hamilton spelling.
I contacted the Gloucester Fishermen’s Memorial Committee and they said someone had changed the record.

From there I was able to find out the crews. I had family members on The Schooner Ocean Traveler which went down heading towards Newfoundland on January 1, 1862….and, a relative that mastered The Schooner North Star, and my great great grandfather, Robert Hamilton went down along with his cousin of his and 7 others on The Schooner "Contest" on February 24, 1862 on George’s Bank.

During my research, I was given your name.  I am writing to you in hopes that you may be able to tell me of whether you are aware of any kind of organization of relatives of the fishermen that went down that day.

I thank you for any information that you may be able to provide to me.  I’d like to contact any known relative and perhaps organize some kind of sesquicentennial remembrance.

Regards, Mark O’Connell

All I could find is this Mark-

Chickity Check It!- City of Gloucester launches new, smart phone friendly, official visitor website

City of Gloucester launches new, smart phone friendly, official visitor website-

GloucesterMA.com

A group of volunteers today launched a new visitor website for the City of Gloucester.  With stunning visuals, expanded listings, a highly intuitive interface and search feature, the new content-rich GloucesterMA.com was built by Peter and Vickie Van Ness as part of a push by PR for Gloucester founders Tracey Muller and Jan Bordinaro to promote tourism and boost the City’s visitor economy.

“The new GloucesterMA.com features Gloucester’s authentic beauty, maritime culture, storied history and thriving arts community,” says developer/marketer Peter Van Ness.  “We feel that promoting our unique, authentic nature is the best way to attract visitors to Gloucester.  Plus this website looks and works great on all smart phones — including the iPhone.”

“The visitor economy holds great promise for creating new jobs and generating new tax revenue for Gloucester,” said Mayor Kirk, who embraced the PR for Gloucester group’s enthusiasm and encouraged them to remake the website.  “This dramatic overhaul of our official Visitor website cost the City nothing.” She added.  “We are grateful to the volunteers and partners who gave their time, photos, data and inspiration to get the job done.”

Every effort was made to include all Gloucester businesses that serve the visitor economy.  Any business that may have been accidentally overlooked can go to the site and fill out the contact page and the developers will include them as soon as possible.  New businesses can do the same.

One of the new features on GloucesterMA.com is a page of stories about Gloucester that includes videos chronicling the sinking of the Corinthian, Gloucester’s official song, links to the Cape Ann Museum’s story of Howard Blackburn, movies filmed on Cape Ann, T.S. Eliot, Rudyard Kipling and the Gloucester Daily Times special coverage of The Perfect Storm.  The PR for Gloucester group encourages anyone who has a story idea to fill out the contact form.

This website is a volunteer effort led by the City of Gloucester Mayor’s office, Tracey Muller, Jan Bordinaro and Peter & Vickie Van Ness, with the help on many partners.

The developers would like to extend our deep gratitude Joey Ciaramitaro of Good Morning Gloucester for sharing his spectacular photos & blog widget, and for his inspiring encouragement and undying support.

Special thanks go out to Bob Hastings of Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and Frank Gentile of Udine4less for making their databases of Gloucester businesses available.

Cute little hot dog cart with a flowerbox near the Fisherman Memorial

I didn’t do my research on Gloucester’s haunted places before we went on our Canada/New England cruise  last year. I figured we’d take an excursion to Salem the day we docked there. Alas, we didn’t do the Salem route and instead spent part of the day walking around Gloucester.

How Cool Is Lily Linquata? GMG Buoy Almost Done

Lily makes these cool nautical themed buoys and sells them (see how you can get one for yourself below the pic).  It was so nice of her to think of us here at GMG headquarters and make one of her beautiful buoys with Da logo!

photo-1

Lily Linquata started painting buoys last summer as part of her involvement in a seasonal gift shop downtown. After selling over fifty to tourists, all from out of state and usually from the middle of the country, she thought there might be a market for unique nautical items outside of Gloucester. Encouragingly for all of us, there is. Based on some blogged photos alone, wedding-related orders have been placed from Chatham, MA and Florida, as well as nursery requests from New York City and a few local birthday buys, as well.

Purchased at Winchester Fishing, these buoys are the real deal; what you’ll find bobbing in the Atlantic most days. Hand painted and calling for three hours of time each (outside of drying) they’re currently selling for $25 to $50 via custom e-mail orders. As of April, these buoys and a few other local items will be available on http://gloucestergoods.com/

How To Publish Series Part V With Kat Valentine

Part 5 – Marketing and Promotion

Probably the most challenging part of being an indie author/publisher is the marketing. Unlike trad-pub authors, indie authors are responsible for all their own marketing. At one time this meant slogging boxes of books around to book stores, trade shows, flea markets – wherever you thought you might be able to push a few books. Thanks to the internet, however, all that is unnecessary. Welcome to the world of Social Media and internet marketing.

Chickity Check It! Dan Driscoll’s Visit Cape Ann

image

Dan Driscoll has been putting together a sort of local business directory at his site Visit Cape Ann.  You can check out a bunch of listings and the map he has put together at VisitCapeAnn.net

It’s very slick and polished.

According to the site, the proceeds go to SoberConnections

All the net proceeds of advertising revenue on this website will go to Sober Connections, an organization looking to get to a non profit status, to help fund the legal costs of filing for their 501 C3, local events and outreach programs they are having in the Cape Ann area, as well as finding and funding a more permanent home for their eventuates and much needed office space.

Jalepenos $50 of Mexican Food For $25 Deal Extended

We used our Groupon for Hale Street last night.  Our bill came to $50.99 and all we had to leave was $1 and we dropped a $10 tip for our server.  What a steal!  Next up for us is using the Jalepenos one.  at this rate we may never eat home again, lol.

The Jalepenos deal was only supposed to be through last night but when I checked it today it looks like it’s been extended for 6 days.

The Mrs bought one yesterday, I’m buying one today!

I don’t know how these places are doing it but if you are going to cook me dinner for less than it would cost me to eat at home I’m gonna partake.  It’s a win/win.  I’m happy to save money and the Mrs is happy that she doesn’t have to cook!

Sweet! Click the picture for the deal. Best part about this one is that it doesn’t expire til the end of the year.

Passports Takes Armchair Travel to New Heights

It’s another frigid night on the North Shore, and you’re in the depths of the winter doldrums. You’re contemplating grabbing your suitcase and wait listing yourself on the first flight south.

Not a bad idea, but we’ve got an easier solution for you: head for Passports where warm popovers, a convivial atmosphere, and a creative menu will cheer you up in no time.

We had a great meal last weekend at this popular Gloucester spot. There were tons of hot and cold tapas to choose from, followed by entrees that were far from run of the mill, and everything was extremely reasonable.
