Is Doug Maxfield DTF?

The question thousands have been asking is if Doug Maxfield will step up and take the Farm Bar and Grille DTF Burger Challenge next Thursday night and compete against such luminaries as Ed “I’ll do anything” Collard", Frankie The Silver Bullet Gwynne, Jeremy The Great Jewish Hope Goldberg and Patrick Lederhosen Ryan.

Maxfield- The man behind my favorite blog NorthShoreWaterman, and the most honest fisherman I’ve never met has yet to be heard from but inquiring minds want to know if he will enter the competition Thursday night at The Farm.

Could we potentially see Maxfield’s name on the same plaque as Dangerous Dick Low and Big Lar?

Kim Smith Talks About Redpolls

image

Kim Smith Writes-

How lovely to receive a visit from this charming flock of redpolls. I knew it to be a new-to-our garden species, but did not realize visits were so much more uncommon than common. Oh how I wish I had taken more snapshots! Common Redpolls are another "irruptive species" from the boreal forests of North American (see Pine Siskins archived on blog), and the winter of 2010-2011 has proven to be an irruptive year for both Common Redpoll and White-winged Crossbill, with many sightings reported in Massachusetts. To learn whether we had Hoary Redpolls or Common Redpolls I emailed Chris Leahy, Mass Audubon’s Chair of Field Ornithology:

Hi Chris–Last week I found this inexpensive Nyjer seed bird feeder at Whole Foods, hung it in the garden next to the finch feeder, and was immediately visited by what I think are redpolls. They stayed for a few days and have not been seen again. It was dreary and rainy, so my photos are gray, not crispy. Do you think they are Common Redpolls or Hoary Redpolls or are the photos not clear enough?

I posted a link on my blog regarding your talk at the Sawyer Free and was disappointed it was cancelled because of the weather. Click on the photo–Chris Leahy and the Birds of Cape Ann--I think it looks like the three sparrows on the right are listening to a talk given by the sparrow on the left–please forgive the "bird" humor. Let me know when you are giving the talk and I will repost.

From Chris– Great, Kim! Send some over to my side of the harbor please! They are Common Redpolls – which are by no means common most winters. There’s a lot of plumage variation in both species and several races of Common Redpolls.  Hoary’s are much rarer of course and tend to hang out in flocks of Commons. Their best marks are a very tiny bill and pure white (or nearly so) under tail coverts (not always easy to see). Sometimes they appear much whiter, but not always and Commons can get very pale especially late in the year as the brown tips of the feathers wear. Chris adds the following important note:

Keep your eyes on your fruiting shrubs for Bohemian Waxwings. We had a flock of 5 (with Cedars) at Halibut Point during the Birding Weekend on Saturday. And Mary in East Gloucester found a dead one on her deck. I’ve had Cedars in my privet hedge during the last 10 days but no Bohemians (yet!?).

Chickity Check It!-Lily Linquata’s Nautical Buoys

Lily Linquata started painting buoys last summer as part of her involvement in a seasonal gift shop downtown. After selling over fifty to tourists, all from out of state and usually from the middle of the country, she thought there might be a market for unique nautical items outside of Gloucester. Encouragingly for all of us, there is. Based on some blogged photos alone, wedding-related orders have been placed from Chatham, MA and Florida, as well as nursery requests from New York City and a few local birthday buys, as well.

Purchased at Winchester Fishing, these buoys are the real deal; what you’ll find bobbing in the Atlantic most days. Hand painted and calling for three hours of time each (outside of drying) they’re currently selling for $25 to $50 via custom e-mail orders. As of April, these buoys and a few other local items will be available on http://gloucestergoods.com/

Chickity Check It! Snow Birds From Kim Smith

Dear Gardening Friends,

As we are nestling in and readying ourselves for yet another snowstorm I am writing to you about the winsome Dark-eyed Junco that has become increasingly more prevalent in our winter garden. Dark-eyed Juncos are commonly referred to in the East as “snowbirds,’ not only because they arrive to their winter feeding grounds oftentimes at the first snow fall, but because of their distinctive coloring—gray skies above (top feathers) and snow below (breast and belly feathers). In a typical winter we see singular juncos at the Nyjer feeders and on the ground below, at the most, two to four. During this snowiest of winters, we have a larger than usual mixed-flock of small seed-eating songbirds, with many more juncos feeding alongside the finches, sparrows, nuthatches, and chickadees. Quite timorous of people and sudden noise, they dart in and out of the dense shrubbery surrounding our little garden, and seem to find the greatest security in the low-lying branches of the ‘Blue Prince’ holly bushes.

Kaitlin’s Response

Many of you wrote in asking just what the response from LA TV producer Kaitlin Herbert was after we requested nude photos before we could enter any serious negotiations to use the Crew of The Degelyse for the Food Network’s newest show.

In case you missed the first part I’ll repost it for you followed by Kaitlin’s response-

So yesterday morning I get an email from a woman named Kaitlin Herbert.  Kaitlin works for the television production company that produces the number one show on BRAVO- “the Millionaire Matchmaker and one of the top rated shows on Animal Planet “Pit Boss”.

So her production company is looking for some fishermen for a particular type of show they are developing for the Food Network.  She told me that she found GMG after an extensive search for Gloucester Fishing vessels. I sent here a pile of links to some of the videos we’ve done featuring Tuffy, Stoga and Trapper John.

Within an hour or so I got an email back from Kaitlin asking for the contact information for Tuffy saying that he and his crew seem like a great group of guys and that they would love to hear their story.

Tuffy happened to be out fishing but when he hit the dock we taped a special message for Kaitlin which you can view below.

Watch the video before reading her response so it will make sense.

Here is Kaitlin’s email response to Tuffy’s video-

I’m both mildly offended and incredibly impressed by your video. While I won’t be sending any nude pictures (that’s what free internet porn is for, boys), I’ve spoken to my bosses and they’re interested in speaking with the crew to get a better feel for the guys and what they do on a daily basis. They really enjoyed the video of Stoga, and would like to know if he’s part of the crew. If there is any more information you could give us, we would greatly appreciate it.

Magnolia Swamp Board Walk Photo from Bill O’Connor

Hey Joe,

Here’s a picture of the Magnolia Swamp Boardwalk in Ravenswood Park that was mentioned on your 2nd podcast this week.  This property is now owned and maintained by the Trustees of Reservations.  I took this picture last year on April 7th , 2010.  I remember it was a really warm day for the season (a record at 88°F).

This board walk is pretty sturdy (the boards are roughly 3” thick), sits about 8” above the surface of the swamp, and gives a great vantage point for spotting frogs eggs and watching swamp critters.  It runs somewhere between 500 to 600 feet across the swamp.  You have to cross another board walk further up the trail to get back across the swamp.

This is a great walk through the woods any time of the year, but in the early Spring there are no bugs yet, and you have a better chance of seeing other animals through the woods due to the lack of foliage. The trail that leads to the boardwalk is a fun little adventure, with one or two neat surprises on the way.  At least it was for my two year old son, who was with me that day. The trail on the other side is pretty cool, too, with a lot of interesting things to see. In some spots the path narrows and  winds along the edge of the swamp. It kind of feels like you’re walking in a scene from the Lord of the Rings, and you’re half expecting to see a Hobbit poking along the trail ahead of you.

It’s definitely worth a visit when the weather breaks.

Enjoy,
~Bill O’Connor

Local Web Business Feature – Art Gallery of Kathryn Gentile Roberts

Here is our local web business of the week. A reminder we do this every week on Monday. If you are anywhere on the North Shore and have an online business or ETSY site, send it to me.

Site: The Art Gallery of Kathryn Gentile Roberts

http://capeannartgallery.com/

Kathryn is not only a big fan of GMG, but a great local artist using the web as a gallery to feature her art. She is a lifetime resident of Gloucester and her work is inspired by the Cape Ann scenic coast. She has been fortunate to spend her summers as both a child and an adult on our beautiful beaches. I posted some of my favorites from her web site below and she does custom work as well.  Here is from the entry to her web gallery:

I invite you to browse my site to view original Watercolor Paintings, Antique Window Art, Prints and Cards of my original work. Many people are attracted to a special painting for themselves to enjoy for a lifetime, but why not give a painting as a gift for a Bridal Shower, Wedding, Anniversary, Special Birthday, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

So check out Kathryn and help support local artists! Thanks – Patrick

The North Shore/Salem YMCA Could Use Your Vote

Hey Joe,

The North Shore/Salem YMCA is in the running for $50k in funding from Pepsi’s Refresh Everything Campaign, and they need people to vote.  The funds will be used to renovate an existing space to create a Youth Creative Arts Center at the Salem Y.  Voting ends tomorrow and you can vote with your Facebook account.  Can you help spread the word – if they win this $50k will benefit a lot of kids on the North Shore.

Part 3 What is “Self” Publishing? From Kat Valentine– Before You Go To Press

Here is part 3. It is a little longer but I cannot emphasize the part in yellow enough! Thank so much!!!

Spelling and Grammar Matter

Thanks to the internet more people than ever are writing on a daily basis – they are blogging, Twittering, Facebooking, IMing, emailing, texting, etc. etc. However, all this writing has lead to a decline in basic grammar and spelling. This may be fine for everyday communications but that does not make it fine for books. Spell check will find words which are spelled incorrectly but it will not differentiate between there/their/they’re, point out words that are used incorrectly, correct punctuation, etc. There are also grammatical conventions for constructing things such as dialog that should be followed if you want your published work to look professional.

Authors who are not open to having their manuscripts proofed, edited, and critiqued should really consider whether they are serious about publishing. Professionals in the publishing business tell me that if an author resists editing and making changes they cannot work with them and will terminate the contract. While it is perfectly reasonable to resist significant content changes to a book (one of my agents wanted me to rewrite The Old Mermaid’s Tale for the Young Adult market — I refused), writers have to comply with standard grammar, punctuation, structure, etc. if they want to be taken seriously.

COMMIT TO QUALITY

Please remember this: when you publish a badly written, badly proofed,

badly edited book, you don’t just make yourself look bad,

you make all self-published authors look bad.

Readers are becoming increasingly sensitive to self-publishing and have no reticence

to give very bad reviews to badly constructed books.

As a self-publisher commit to the highest standards possible.

Check out the site, they are starting to get into news more, in addition to the sports-centric site that it had been.

Part 2 continued – What is “Self” Publishing? From Kat Valentine

What is INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING & how is it different from subsidy publishing?

Unlike subsidy publishing, independent publishing is entirely controlled by the author. Most of the prominent writers who have self-published have done so independently so that they could publish under their own imprint. What this means is that they take control of the entire process which includes selecting a name for their publishing company (I use Parlez-Moi Press) and purchasing their ISBNs under that imprint so their books are published by their own imprint. Sometimes 3 or 4 authors work together to form a small press, one local example is Back Shore Press which was formed by Peter Anastas, Schuyler Hoffman, and Peter Tuttle to publish and promote their books.

image

This is how an independent publisher publishes:

  1. Editing and Proofing: No matter how skillful you are and no matter how much effort you put into your work it will need proofing. Mistakes occur even in books by major publishers.
