Hobbit House II

hobbit house II_madfish wharf

Thanks to one of those unexpected miracles of the Universe manifested through dear friend, Alma McLaughlin, I have been given a great gallery space for the remainder of the season back on Madfish Wharf. Hobbit House II (aka Khan Studio & the GMG Gallery), located at 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 6, is a beautiful gallery overlooking Smiths Cove with great light and energy. The gallery features the works of Joey C., Donna Ardizzoni, Len Burgess, Tom Nihan, Linda Sodja, Judy Wilburn, Belle & Me, Kathy Chapman, and of course, me.

In collaboration with Regina Piantedosi at YUPO Gallery, G4, we are resuming the fun tradition of weekly GMG Mug Ups at Madfish Wharf, now being held weekly on Saturdays at 9:30am so Joey can come, followed at 11:00 by the Rocky Neck Art Walk.

Map update of Justin Desilva’s temporary crosswalks HarborWalk Public Art Challenge

Hi Joey

Artist Justin Desilva is more than half way through his ambitious public art installation, With Every Street There’s a Story. Remember, they’re temporary, so take time to check them out.

Some of the murals are at different stages in their installation process; you will see him going back and forth to different sites. Here’s a map http://goo.gl/maps/mc696 for any updated locations andphotographs. Walkers provide the most comments and questions, which he’s really enjoying.  They talk about Gloucester mostly and they talk about art. He’s been told that his pictures were kaleidoscopic, like stained glass, the quarries, that his red reminded them of some works by Miro, or Braque and Picasso. There have been requests for a crosswalk by their street, house, and business. People driving by have stopped to park and get out of their cars to walk back and look.

Crosswalks in this post include Gorton’s HarborWalk Story Moment #27, Birdseye HarborWalk Story Moment #33, Sea Serpent HarborWalk Story Moment #19, Stage Fort Park HarborWalk Story Moment #42, Katy (from Virginia Lee Burton’s Katy and the Big Snow) HarborWalk Story Moment #30, and Hopper HarborWalk Story Moment #28.

Did You Know (Rocky Neck Art Colony) – You’re Invited

RNAC art walk flier

That the Rocky Neck Art Colony is one of the oldest working art colonies in the country, and has been luring artists and appreciators to its picturesque shores since the 1850’s? Today the art colony still draws artists from around the world to paint and experience the magic that is Rocky Neck. Rocky Neck is home to artists and non-artists alike, many unique galleries, The Cultural Center, Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District, and four restaurants (Sailor Stan’s for breakfast, The Studio and Madfish Grille for lunch and dinner and The Rudder for dinner). The main draw to Rocky Neck Art Colony is of course the unique flavor of the art and artists that make Rocky Neck their home and place of business.

Artists are a special breed of people, who have chosen to pursue their passion and make the world a more beautiful place. The artists of Rocky Neck are especially unique, talented and diverse in the work they create. On Rocky Neck, you can find exceptional traditional representational works, abstract, contemporary, decorative, two and three-dimensional paintings, photographs, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, wearable art, greeting cards, books and more. And you will find some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere.

Starting on Saturday, August 16 and continuing each Saturday through September, the galleries on Rocky Neck will be featuring the Rocky Neck Art Walk. It will start at 9:30 am on Madfish Wharf with a GMG Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery and YUPO Gallery. After having coffee, refreshments and visiting with old and new friends, you can take a leisurely visit through the galleries on Rocky Neck, meet and chat with the artists and learn about their creations and creative process, at a time when the Neck isn’t crowded and parking isn’t a problem.

Come have fun, experience something new, and discover the unique treasure of Gloucester that is the Rocky Neck Art Colony.

The Answer to What is 1630. Joey’s Invitation He may soon regret!

What is 1630?

1,630 is The number of posts I have done since I was invited to join GMG as an Author. Who knew I had so much on my mind. For the most part it’s been fun. Sometimes I get a little carried away. I still have my comments censored by Joey. He tries to save me from myself. During my first couple of years I would love to bust Joey’s Balls when he went on vacation. Back then he didn’t have the time to check the late night posts. So I took advantage of it. Posting joey’s head on a picture of a guy taking a dump was my favorite.

It’s a lot of brain work to come up with a daily post and post title to catch the readers attention. Sometimes I’ll take a little break to recharge my brain.

I never thought this blog would last this long. It’s going to be interesting to see what’s next for GMG.

Goodluck Joey and all the GMG Authors!

Joey’s Invitation He Soon My Regret!

Joey’s Invitation; “Paul, I’m inviting you to officially join the team. All you would need to do is sign up for a free wordpress account and I have it set up so you would be an author like Mike Lindberg , Laurie Lufkin etc.”

Thanks for the Invite to be a GMG Author Joey. It’s an Honor, but I don’t know.

Here are some of my thoughts and questions

Is this an everyday thing?   that may be tough.
What happens if you miss a scheduled post?
I think I have enough Anxiety in my Life.
I don’t have a lot to say!
I could say something  you and I may regret!
What if I ruin GMG’s reputation? It could happen.
What’s the chances of my Wife putting out more because of  this?
What’s the chance of me getting punched from this?
It could be fun!
It could be a disaster!
I could use it to promote the visual arts in gloucester!! and maybe get a kickback. (just kidding)
I could use it to help Promote  Visual Artist’s in this tough economy.
I could use it to promote my stuff!

I could make a complete fool of myself!  I know! That sounds silly, Does’nt it?

See Joey, that’s what goes through my mind.
DO YOU REALLY WANT SOMEONE LIKE ME THAT COULD POSSIBLY RUIN GMG’S REPUTATION???????????????
AND I THINK THIS WOULD BE MY FIRST POST.

Hi Joey

Justin Desilva’s 20 part work of art is titled, Every Picture Tells A Story. His crosswalk art enlarges and interprets HarborWalk story moment content through a combination of digital paintings that he’s printed and combined with long stretches of color field painted sky.

Here’s one by the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free library for the Samuel Sawyer story moment #31, an abstraction of the exterior and trees.

I would greatly appreciate if you could spread the word about my project and I would be more than happy to give you more information. The cleanup is scheduled for August 20, 2014 at 6:30 pm. Thanks!

Cape Ann Artists of the Past

Anthony Thieme

anthony thieme

Anthony Thieme

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Anthony Thieme (20 February 1888 – 6 December 1954) was a landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport (MA) School of American regional art. He was a contemporary of important Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson.

Born in Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at the Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe, frequently finding work as a stage designer.

Thieme traveled to the United States at the age of 22. He quickly found work as a stage designer at the Century Theater in New York, designing sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. When the commission ended, he traveled to South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina. Stage work again provided his livelihood. A return to Europe followed with further work in England, France, and Italy.

Returning to the United States with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston. He discontinued work on the stage in 1928 and from then on made his living with the sales of his paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian Beckett in 1929 and moved to Rockport, MA. He established the Thieme School of Art. He exhibited his work frequently at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York.

He continued to travel widely; Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France were major destinations, always painting en plein air.

Thieme committed suicide on 6 December 1954 in Greenwich, CT. The circumstances of his death are not fully understood. There have been stories of deep depression or major illness, but no definitive rationale for his suicide has emerged.

Anthony Thieme was a full member of the American Watercolor Society, Art Alliance of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art Association, Rockport Art Association, New York Water Color Club, Art Alliance of Philadelphia and the National Arts Club.”

Fishermens Memorial-

Joey, was hoping you could post this to let all the families and public know about it.

The annual Fishermen’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 16th at 5:00 P.M . This Service is to remember and honor all of those who have lost their lives in the long history of Gloucester’s fishing industry. The Service starts with a procession from the American Legion, down Middle Street and onto Stacy Boulevard. Everyone is invited to join the procession. It is lead by a line of drummers and many of those walking carry flowers to toss into the sea at the end of the ceremony to remember loved ones or hold boat oars carrying the names of Gloucester fishing boats, past and present. Please join the Fishermen’s Memorial Service Committee in remembering those who lost their lives fishing from America’s oldest seaport. Hey, Joey. I’m hoping that someone from GMG can me some suggestions.

My friend has a trained cat show/rescue program that tours the country. She uses positive reinforcement to train all the cats and they even have an all cat band with feline guitar players, piano players, drummers and even a chicken that plays the tambourine. She uses the show not only to entertain, but to teach people the importance of interacting and training their cats to prevent problem behaviors. While she tours, she networks with rescues and shelters to help them raise money and awareness of of their needs. She also has personally found homes for over 100 abandoned/rescued cats while touring.

She will be on the east coast next summer and is a huge Gloucester fan. I suggested the Gorton Theatre, but she needs something that doesn’t have an audience on three sides.  Is there a venue or a club that holds about 100 people that does rentals?  It’s a really unique fun show, although sometimes the cats choose to leave the stage to meet and mingle with audience members rather than perform.  The cats are all happy and love being on stage and tour in a special RV with huge play rooms that they live in. The website is http://www.circuscats.com if anyone wants to check it out. Some of the cats even have twitter accounts.

Any help finding her a venue that she could rent next summer would be greatly appreciated. I also suggested the Cape Ann animal shelter for her to work with.

Thanks, Joey!

Hello,
I enjoy your site every day.  I have a question,  I host a cycling event every year out of Danvers, Ma that supports cancer research at BIDMC in Boston, MA.  It is a grass roots effort that gives 100% funds raised directly to BIDMCs cancer research programs.  We have people from all over the North Shore participating in the ride.  Our web site is  www.areasontoride.com .  Could this event make it into you publication?

Public Art: Two more Justin Desilva crosswalks downtown Gloucester

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey

As a reminder, there will be 20 temporary mixed media crosswalks throughout downtown by artist, Justin Desilva (Rhode Island School of Design alumnus). Each one features different HarborWalk story moment content.  Special thanks to Ben’s Paint.

Here’s the TS Eliot work along the intersection of Washington Street and Main by Tallys. The HarborWalk Story Moment marker #2 featuring TS Eliot is further down on the path by St. Peter’s and Cape Ann Brewing.

image010 (1)

Comments included how the images change depending upon where and how one is looking (viewing the images through a lens, or viewfinder, from a distance, or up close).

This man thought it was fun to compare Justin’s ideas and process with Seurat and other Pointillists. The pug is unfazed by the new surface over his frequent path past Joan of Arc. The HarborWalk Joan of Arc story marker is #37. We’ll ask Justin about his ideas in another post.

image011 (3)

Today’s intermittent rain slowed down the process, but not the speed of the cars! (Drivers fly past Joan of Arc heading to the Boulevard).

Thanks to Phyllis Cucuru for spending time with us and supplying a barney trash bag. Feeling fortunate that Café Sicillia, Building Center and other businesses are open on Sunday as we had to make a couple of trips. Desilva was planning to complete Hammond Castle and one in tribute to the Dory (on Main Street by Café Sicillia and Short and Main).

Here’s the Hammond Castle site BEFORE looking down to the Boulevard and out to the harbor. There’s also a photo looking back in the direction of the Joan of Arc memorial.

The 2013 Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge was a competitive, two-stage, open process established and administered by the Committee for the Arts (CFTA) on behalf of the City of Gloucester, and at the direction of Mayor Kirk and the City’s Community Development Department under Sarah Garcia. Funding for the purchase of public art was provided through a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Seaport Advisory Council. The awards reflect discussions, community development, planning and determination to remember and work towards incorporating the creative arts broadly alongside other city efforts.
