Gloucester Filmmaker Dennis Lanson’s “To Hear the Music” Airs on PBS This Sunday!!!

Dear Friends and Family,

I thought you might like to know that Gloucester filmmaker Dennis Lanson’s fine documentary about the organ we (C.B. Fisk) built at Harvard University will be shown on WGBH Channel 2 at five o’clock on Sunday, January 11.

It’s called “To Hear the Music,” and it not only follows the construction and installation of our Opus 139 at Harvard’s Memorial Church, but also looks back at the 54 year history of our unique Gloucester company, and at the life of Charles Fisk, our founder and mentor.

Here’s a link to the trailer, and other info as well.

Please help us get the word out by forwarding this on to folks you know who might be interested.

Best wishes for the new year,

Greg

Santa’s Out of Gas

SantaGas5430wmI have to confess that the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to yesterday, two days after Christmas, have exhausted me. Black Friday, Ladies’ Night, Men’s Night, the GMG Holiday party (the last two being back to back). I was also open every afternoon except Sundays from about noon to 5:15 pm, catching the last CATA bus to Rockport. My electrician described himself as “feeling like junk”, after a tough night. I feel like that every day, especially in my legs and abdomen, from the exertion at PT, work, and related to my cancer. If not for my medical professionals and friends helping me, it never could have happened.

Tomorrow, Monday, I have physical therapy at Addison Gilbert Hospital, which may be my last session until a rollover date. I’ve been a steady show-up at PT, like a football pro who’d get fined for a no-show. January will be a time of rest. This week, I’ll be open Monday 12/29, Tuesday 12/30, Friday 1/2/15, and Saturday 1/3/15. I carry on.

Some Inspiration For All You Creatives Out There

Man I was feeling this interview.  For anyone that creates to feed their soul- watch this and be inspired by the raw honesty.  Love the part about perspective toward the end.

Beautiful, Beautiful Lynn Swigart Photos of Gloucester and Other Favorites at Trident Gallery

Don’t miss Lynn Swigart’s show of stunning photographs, many from Gloucester, along with other favorites, currently on display at the Trident Gallery through January 4th.

Trident Gallery will be open late and serving refreshments on Thursday night, the 18th, for Men’s Night, which also coincides with the opening of Pinoli. You can check out the Lobster Trap Tree next door to Trident, see Lynn’s photos, shop local, and have dinner at Pinoli (or any of the other fabulous dining establishments on Main Street). Sounds like a wonderfully fun night out to me!

One Pirates Lane Sign Beautifully Recreated by Master Woodcarver David Calvo and Question for Our Local Historians and Long-Time Residents

One Pirates Lane sign ©Kim Smith 2014JPGNext time you are heading to East Gloucester or Rocky Neck, take a look at the striking new sign at One Pirates Lane, which was recently restored by Gloucester’s own David Calvo. David was commissioned to recreate the sign as the old one had rotted through and through; made of solid mahogany, the new sign will surely last a lifetime.

David’s studio is located at 235 East Main Street. Visit his website to see more of David’s outstanding portfolio of beautiful designs and workmanship here: David Calvo Studio

David shares a bit of history about the sign: The building was owned by Howard Richardson who ran his trade show design business there. The sign was done by Alfred Czerpak. Richardson and artist Czerepak attended Mass College of Art at the same time. Howard asked Alfred to make a sign for him. The original sign went up in 1981. Al was the name he went by and he lived in one of the homes behind Richardson’s business on Pirates Lane. Al pursued a painting career and also created many multi media pieces. Thank you Colleen and David for the information! One Pirates Lane ©Kim Smith 2014

Questions for our old-timer GMG readers: We who live in the East Gloucester/Pirates Lane neighborhood have all heard that One Pirates Lane was at one time a Russian tea house. Can any of our readers confirm that and if so, share their recollections. We would love to know more and thank you so much for taking the time to write.

See previous GMG post with Adam Bolonsky interview of David Calvo

AERIAL SHORT FILM: MYSTERY BY THE SEA – THE TOOL FACTORY

With all the mystery and unknown floating around the fate of the tool factory, I thought I would go take a look…from the sky of course. Officially, it’s the Cape Anne Tool Company. I imagined that most people don’t really know what the entire property looks like, or it’s scope. Within seconds I quickly realized the scale of the place. My mind raced about what could be. You can just imagine all of the possibilities that could be created there, besides a massive residence or condos. I could see a stunning waterside park and recreational space, or perhaps preserving it’s rich fishing history of pigeon cove would be perfect! I hope you enjoy!

Peabody Essex Museum Art Basel New York Times Theo Jansen’s art walk in Miami

Hey Joey,

Coming to theaters December 2015, have you seen the new Star Wars trailer? Museums kindle interest with trailers, too, and there’s one in Miami that may go viral.

This week the art scene is all about Art Basel Miami, the annual contemporary art fair juggernaut. With so many international artists, galleries, exhibits and events, it can be difficult to get any coverage at all. The single event the New York Times Magazine featured last weekend to build anticipation for Art Basel Miami was the Peabody Essex Museum prelude for Theo Jansen’s 2015 national tour. The story quickly climbed to the #1 most emailed articles for the NYT magazine. Jansen’s kinetic sculptures are on most media short lists as a must see experience at this year’s Art Basel Miami (e.g. Huffington Post Art Basel to do list)

Trevor PEM

PEM is featuring Dutch artist Theo Jansen at Art Basel Miami to herald the national museum tour for Strandbeests, managed and debuting at the Peabody Essex Museum in the fall of 2015.

Will there be a chance to marvel at these curiosities in our natural world? Will we encounter a herd at Good Harbor, Wingaersheek, or Singing beaches? I’m not sure. These graceful engineered beings seem a good fit for visiting our shores and inspiring wonder. Does anyone remember the Crane’s Beach dune buggy scene from the 1968 Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway?

PEM ranks in the top 10 largest collections in the country and is growing fast. I’m not sure where the Jansen exhibit will be installed within the museum, but I bet connections will be past, present and future all betwixt and between.  I am anticipating and looking forward to the Jansen exhibit calling forth my memories of the dinosaur fossil skeletons and mounted installations. I remember feeling awestruck by the scale of the objects within the spaces and purpose. “That every mariner may possess the History of the World”.

Special congratulations to PEM curator, Trevor Smith, for the Theo Jansen exhibit. On December 5th, he’ll be with Theo Jansen as part of Art Basel Salon discussions. Trevor launched the FreePort contemporary artist commissions at Peabody Essex Museum in 2010. He helped as a juror for the Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge.
