Alexandra’s Bread Oilcloth Bags

Yesterday I popped into Alexandra’s Bread to grab some cobbles for my girls.  You should see Snoop Maddie Mad tear through a cobble, she loves em!

But they always have some funky cool stuff for sale and Alexandra changes up the product mix all the time.

Here are some bags made from oil cloth.  There were also place mats,  baby bibs and other items made from oil cloth.

Movie – “Greenheads”

greenheads-photoGREENHEADS
Wed., Feb. 18 @ 7:15pm
Cape Ann Community Cinema
267 East Main Street
East Gloucester
978/282-1988

Sometime painter Sam Holdsworth painted a series of 38 oil panels which were an imaginative, sideways tribute to that local summertime menace, the Tabanus americanus — or Greenhead horse fly. This short film, produced and narrated by Holdsworth’s Musician Magazine co-founder, Gordon Baird, is a simultaneously amusing and haunting short film, portraying the carnivorous creatures as human-like and alien at the same time.

Mr. Baird will be on hand to present the film and conduct a Q&A after the show, which is presented at the special discount price of $5.00, proceeds from which will benefit the Matteo Russo Fund. A selection of Gloucester-related short subjects will precede the film.

We did good!

From the Gloucester Daily Times-

In a program ripe with artists capturing Gloucester’s character, the city’s spirit shone as bright as ever.

Snowed out two weeks earlier, the fund-raiser to aid the children of Patriot fishing boat Captain Matteo Russo drew a near full house Sunday afternoon to the Gloucester Stage Co, theater, where lobster broker and “Good Morning Gloucester” blogger Joe Ciaramitaro teamed up with Cape Ann Cinema coordinator Rob Newton to raise more than $2,200 for the cause.

But the success of the event extended beyond the numbers, and even beyond the fact that it was for a good cause.

Packed House For GGAP II

We had a lot of fun and raised money for a great cause.   People turned out and I’m proud to say that GGAP II was the first sell-out at Cape Ann Community Cinema.  We raised $2217. which will be deposited by the end of the week to The MR Children fund.  There are still 12 t shirts left which can be purchased at The Dress Code downtown and 100% of that money will be added into the total when they are sold.  Also Rob Newton will be donating a portion of the proceeds from a show this week (details to follow) into the pot.

Who is your favorite local artist?
Okay, there’s this guy, I know his first name is “Jeff”, because I met him on the road after having snuck up behind him when he was painting down near North Shore Art Association and saw what he was doing. A month or so later, I passed him when I was walking and asked him if he was that painter and that’s when I got his name. His work was amazing. He’s generally on foot and I think lives or lived down near Beacon Marine? You know who that is? I’ve only seen a few things that he’s working on live (lurking behind and trying not to invade what he was concentrating on, I doubt he knew I was checking out what he was working on)

Which is your favorite local beach?
Good Harbor in the morning before it gets crowded.

Who has the best chowder in town?
On the clam chowder, anyplace that doesn’t add flour. (Halibut has good chowder)

Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog?
I actually don’t read any other local blogs! (so that defaults to yours, sorry…I like your photographs)

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
Clam Chowder. But Passports has this amazing red spicy fish chowder thing that is incredible and pretty sure it has haddock in it. I’d take that particular one over clam chowder any day.

What were your thoughts on The Downtown Block Parties last year?
“Wish I knew about it and wish I had gone”.

What is your favorite local band?
What Time is it Mr. Fox? (with Brian King, that voice of his!)

Thanks, Joey

Gloucester’s Poet Laureate John Ronan To Recite

Yesterday I got a call from Sharon asking me if I thought it would be okay to ask Gloucester’s Poet Laureate John Ronan to recite the poem he wrote in tribute of Matteo Russo and John Orlando at the Gloucester Guerilla Art event today at Cape Ann Community Cinema.

I told her sure if she could get ahold of him and he wanted to do it.  Sharon tells me that in fact he will come and is honored to be a part of it.

We will be showing up early around 12:30 if anyone wants to swing by and hang out before the show (my favorite part).

I love this little guy! You have to be walking to see it. Look over the railing just before the Beacon Marine building. And there it is. Of course when the tide’s in, it’s underwater. Does anyone know where it came from?  —Sharon

Movie – “Visible Silence”

VISIBLE SILENCE: MARSDEN HARTLEY, PAINTER AND POET
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH @ 7:15PM
***DIRECTOR IN ATTENDANCE***
THE CAPE ANN COMMUNITY CINEMA
(AT GLOUCESTER STAGE)
267 EAST MAIN STREET * EAST GLOUCESTER * 978/282-1988

This is the first documentary ever made about world-renowned painter Marsden Hartley. It was written, directed, and narrated by Michael Maglaras of 217 Films, who will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions following the screening.

“Visible Silence” features 43 Hartley paintings and sketches as well as many photographs of Hartley — from early youth to his final years as “Maine’s Painter.” Drawing heavily from his poetical works, this documentary, a deeply personal statement by Maglaras, captures the essence of Hartley — long considered one of the fathers of American Modernism.

Hartley spent his life traveling the world in search of remote and forbidding landscapes. A critical period for Hartley was his stay in Gloucester in the 1930’s, where he painted his “Dogtown” series.

“The two periods in Hartley’s creative life, first in 1920 and then again in 1931 when he went to Gloucester and to Cape Ann to paint, left us some of the most wonderful and exciting work of Hartley’s career,” said Maglaras. “Hartley fell in love with the area around Gloucester, known as Dogtown, and from his humble boarding house at #1 Eastern Point Road, reported to friends that ‘… a sense of eeriness pervades all the place; the white ghosts of those huge boulders stand like sentinels guarding nothing but space.’”

An entire section of this film is devoted to an important early painting, “Carnival of Autumn,” which is in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Art. Also featured is the late painting “Summer, Sea, Window, Red Curtain” from the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.

In 2008, a Hartley painting sold for $6.31 million, setting an auction record at Christie’s for an American Modernist work, overtaking a record previously held by a work of Georgia O’Keeffe.

Check out Gail McCarthy’s great article from last Thursday’s GD Times.

Director Michael Maglaras will be on-hand to present the film and conduct a Q&A after the show, and will be joined by Mary Beth Bainbridge of the Peabody-Essex Museum.

Vote For Gloucester

This just in from seARTS-

Vote For Gloucester, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

 Help Governor Patrick Choose

In a successor to the 50 States Quarters Program, the U.S. Mint, in a  nationwide program, has asked Governor Patrick to select one preferred and three alternate Massachusetts national sites to be featured on the reverse of a quarter. Beginning in 2010, the Mint will release five new quarter designs annually based on the order in which the selected sites gained federal designation. Governor Patrick is calling on the people of Massachusetts to help with this decision.

“Our Commonwealth has many great parks and historically significant sites,” said Governor Patrick. “It will be fun to let everybody help choose the one to submit.”

One of the sites included is Gloucester’s famous Man at the Wheel Statue created by sculptor and photographer Leonard Craske. This statue not only commemorates Gloucester’s maritime heritage but also its distinguished arts history. Please visit the voting site and place a vote for Gloucester!

Go to:  America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter

Scroll down the list to Essex County and click next to Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial, Gloucester.

You can vote as often as you like but all voting must be done by 5:00 p.m. February 26, 2009.

Thank you.
