Author Sally Goldenbaum Talks Gloucester and New Mystery Book A Holiday Yarn

Sally talks about Gloucester and a whole ton of Gloucester references in her new mystery “A Holiday Yarn”

Sally will be reading and signing her new book “A Holiday Yarn,” this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Rockport Library.

You can check out Sally Goldenbaum’s website and blog here

The blog portion of her site can be accessed by clicking the tab labeled “Sally’s Porch”.  My guess is that 95% of the people that go to her site probably never knew she had a blog that was attached to her site because they didn’t know that the “Sally’s Porch” tab is what would land you there.  A more appropriate label for that tab would probably be “blog” or “Sally’s Blog”.

Carol McKenna Sketchbook Project Update

Sketchbook Project 2011

from Carol McKenna

In creatively thinking about how I would protect my Sketch Book for this project, it took several weeks of reflection and experimenting before I decided what I would do. My main purpose was to protect the book. My second concern was to “keep it simple”. My life can be rather complex so I didn’t need to add to the chaos that can so randomly occur. Therefore, I now have a very simple, yet “artsy” cover for my Sketchbook.

Cover for Sketchbook Project 2011

Hopefully, you will be able to see the picture as I try to figure the wordpress technique of uploading photos and what happens to them after you have uploaded them And you thought us Artists just sit around and play all day ~ HUH! ~ Enjoy.

Hugs and namaste,

Carol McKenna

Art Rock Found! Coincidence?

Last Sunday while driving around the Back Shore I decided to stop at the Elks club Parking lot and Sketch the scene before me on a Rock. Yeah, I know I’m Nuts.

I left it across the street from the Elks Club in the rocks where the Hotel has a sitting area.

I didn’t know my Son was going to bring his friends to the Elks Club to reserve it for their Wedding next year. I posted the Rock I sketched on here on GMG about 11am. I got a phone call at 2:30pm  from my son Paul the III telling me they found it. They thought my Son set it up, but he had no idea what I did that morning and I had no idea what he was going to do that day. (Strange ain’t it?) after they reserved the Elks club they walked down the road to where I left the “Art Rock”

Here is the email my son sent me;

Hey Dad, Heres the Picture of them holding the rock. They found it when they walked across from the elks to see where their wedding pictures will be taken. We were all standing around it and tom said “that rock has your name on it” Everyone thought my son Paul set it up. But he did’nt know anything about it. Now that’s a Coincidence! Tom and Joselin are getting married at Good Harbor Beach on labor day 2011 and having the reception at the elks.
Here’s a photo of Tom and his Fiance holding the ROCK. Good Luck Guys!! I hope you enjoy the Rock!

ZombieBooth 3D

Haven’t been posting so much since I’ve been getting ready for Halloween. To really get a good zombie look going, I didn’t want fresh dead, I decided to bury myself in the back yard mulch pile for three weeks.

How do I look?

For 99 cents and an iPhone you too can become a zombie after downloading ZombieBooth 3D. Extremely simple to use. It can take a photo from your photo library or better to snap a new head shot with eyes open, mouth closed and if long hair tie it back.

And make sure to shake your zombie. By shaking the phone you go from fresh dead to opaque eyes then they fall out. (About ten levels of zombification.) My eyes have been plucked already by a hungry homie.  My only disappointment is it has a difficult time with dogs. Stella ended up with a small zombie poking out of her ear. I zombified my entire lab in ten minutes. It transforms even the sweetest person and it really shows the evil lurking in their soul. But everyone has to eat and zombies have to eat. A lot.

But wait, there’s more. Tweet it, Facebook it, and the best part, drag your finger across the screen. The zombie intently follows the finger and tries to eat it given the chance. My little movie is following my finger and takes a nip.

Just search in iPhone apps for “zombiebooth”. There are hundreds of Zombie apps but this one makes for the freshest zombies. Make sure it is ZombieBooth 3D. Accept no imitators.

And if you see a seagull coughing up some eyeballs bring them by Sailor Stan’s on Saturday morning so I can read the menu. Doesn’t Passports have a Braille menu? I might have to go there.

Boy, the things I do for GMG …

Rockport Middle School Performs Annie This Weekend

image

Rockport Middle School Performs Annie.  This weekend.

The cast of this year’s middle school musical, "Annie," has been hard

at work rehearsing every day after school since the first week of

school. Due to the large number of performers, there will be two

casts: one cast will handle the Thursday night and Saturday matinee

performances and the other will perform on Friday and Saturday nights.

Additionally, our crew members have begun work on our complex,

multi-level set.  Putting together this show has been a team effort

involving over 75 middle school students and several high school

student assistant directors, in addition to the support of teachers,

staff, and parents.

Annie is sure to be a production you won’t soon forget, so don’t miss

out! Performances will be October 28 and 29 at 7:00 pm and on October

30 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. There will be no performances on Sunday the

31st (Halloween). General Admission tickets are $10. Tickets for

students and seniors are $7. For more information, call the middle

school office at 978-546-1250.

Holiday Photo Gifts Thank Yous and Order Information

Thanks to Friends Of The Blog Bobby Ryan, Loretta, Rich and Cynthia for your orders.

Here is the info if anyone would like to order one (I’ll repost this once a week through the season in case folks want to contribute to the blog and my new camera fund) 🙂

Many people have asked to buy my pictures and I’ve long refused but I’ve decided with the holidays coming up I’d give people an opportunity to get some holiday shopping done early and at the same time give the people who ask if there is any way they could support the blog a way to cut down on some of my hosting expenses and the like.

Most people charge upwards of $25 for an 8×10 photo but I decided that I’d start the pricing at $15 and give folks a break incrementally the more they buy. So if you would like to support the effort I put into the blog and want to bang out some holiday shopping early check out the pictures and email me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com with the picture number(s) you would like and your address and I will mail them to you. Each photo will come in a protective sleeve ready for gifting. All photos will come sans the Good Morning Gloucester Watermark.

Turn silver into gold…Time and Tide Fine Art

Turn silver into gold…

Time and Tide Fine Art, 4 Market Street, Ipswich

presents

Asha Night

on October 27

6-9 pm

Sue Clark will present her full collection of handcrafted silver and stone bead jewelry. Asha Designs uses all the proceeds from the sale of jewelry to support education in South Sudan. Call Kristina Brendel at 978 238 8848 for more information.

Time & Tide Teams with Asha Designs to Support Sudan

On Wednesday, October 27, you have an opportunity to turn silver into gold.

If you buy a piece of sterling silver jewelry at Time & Tide Fine Art, 4 Market Street, you will be helping a child in Sudan get something truly precious: an education.

“The first person I thought about when I began the process of opening Time & Tide was Susie Clark, the jeweler behind Asha Designs,” says Kristina Brendel. “We had been friends back when we both lived in Arizona. Both of us moved to New England, and both of us have found ourselves involved in humanitarian work overseas.”

Clark’s passion is for the people of South Sudan, and specifically the children of the villages of Yambio and Baguga. She first visited Sudan on a mission trip with her church (Our Savior Lutheran Church in Topsfield) in 2007 — “an amazing adventure,” Clark calls it, “that changed my life.”

Sudan suffered 23 years of brutal civil war, which destroyed “all the basics of life,” she says: electricity, running water, roads, and more. Now life is slowly returning to something like “normal,” but the needs of the children are enormous. Clark witnessed the need firsthand, and decided to do something about them.

image“I decided that I could put my jewelry designing skills to use to benefit those kids, and Asha Designs was born,” explains Clark. “Asha is Arabic for hope. In the past 4 years I’ve raised over $20,000 selling my work. We’ve been able to help start classroom buildings and provide teachers’ salaries, affecting the lives of over 500 children. I’ve also been able to sponsor a young man, Benjamin Ibako, by paying for his university tuition.

“I knew when I decided to travel to Southern Sudan I would see things that would disturb my suburban American heart, that I would live for 2 weeks far outside my comfort zone, that I would be a ‘visitor’ among these faces, so different than mine. What I didn’t expect was to have these people crawl into my heart and change me so deeply; that I would feel that I personally could do some small things that could impact some of the lives of that beautiful land. I pray that their names, faces, and stories will never allow me to slide back into complacency, that the songs of the children will haunt me until I become part of the balm that heals Southern Sudan. ”

Starting with a simple tribal spiral earring design, the Asha line has expanded to include semi-precious stone and sterling silver beads. Asha’s designs were previously only available at church events and online; Time & Tide was their first public retail venue. Asha has been very popular with Ipswich residents and tourists alike.

On Wednesday, October 27, from 6-10 pm, Clark will present an expanded selection of her work at discounted prices in the Time & Tide gallery. All proceeds from the evening will go directly to the work in Sudan.

“When you buy jewelry by Asha Designs (named for a beautiful young woman who I met while there),” Clark says, “you will be helping to change the lives of these beautiful children. They will be the future doctors, teachers and leaders of this beautiful, wounded land.”
