From the Awesome Foundation FB page ~

“On a monthly basis, we pool together the money for Awesome Gloucester micro-grants from the coffers of twenty Trustees of Awesome. We then give this money to project creators upfront in cash. Our micro-grants are given with no strings attached.

Awesome Gloucester encourages and supports projects intended to add Awesomeness to Gloucester in any of the following areas: (1) maritime related industry and economy, (2) preservation of maritime heritage and culture, and (3) community togetherness and appreciation.

If you have an idea for an Awesome project you’d like for us to fund, simply fill in this form before the 15th of each month:

www.awesomefoundation.org/en/submissions/new

[NOTE: WE’LL START ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS IN SEPTEMBER.]

We get together on the last Thursday of every month to narrow down the field and decide the winner. After that meeting, we announce a list of Finalists by posting them on our Facebook Page.

A few days after we post the Finalists on Facebook, we’ll announce the winner! Lots of times we’ll host a party for the Finalists where we’ll hand over the $1,000 micro-grant in person and in cash.”

Gloucester HarborWalk Tulip Tree Image to Travel Around the World

Recently Joey was contacted by The Field Museum in Chicago about a GMG post from May 2012. They were interested in acquiring an image of mine from a post about our beautiful HarborWalk Tulip Trees, planted at St. Peter’s Square.

Tulip Tree at the Gloucester HarborWalk Butterfly Garden

The Field Museum is currently developing an engaging new scientific exhibition on the topic of Biomechanics that will debut in the spring of 2014.  Led by the curatorial efforts of Field Museum Curator of Zoology, Dr. Mark Westneat, the exhibition will explore the science of looking at living things as machines built by nature and evolution.  One of the topics presented includes wind and how the leaves of a tree change in the wind.

I selected Tulip Trees for the gardens not only because they have a lovely ornamental bi-color effect when the leaves catch the wind, but primarily because they have a storied connection to Gloucester history. Liriodendron tulipifera was one of the primary woods used for tall ship’s masts, and because much of the wood from which the CB Fisk organs are built is Tulip Poplar (thank you to Greg Bover for the information about the Fisk connection to tulip poplar!). Tulip Trees are also a caterpillar food plant for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly!

Betty-SandersBetty Sanders

Garden Design for Decades by Betty Sanders.  Gardens should never be a burden to us.  What we want in our 20’s and 30’s is not what the same as we want in later years.  You’ll learn how to keep your gardens as your needs and  abilities change.  It’s a matter of plant selection and design, and can pay dividends for decades.

We are thrilled to have Betty Sanders back to present this program. Betty is a Massachusetts Master Gardener with a degree in organic chemistry and a well-respected garden speaker. Currently serving as vice-president of the Bay State’s 150-member Master Gardener Association, she said she gives lectures that “combine my knowledge of gardening and chemistry” Betty is nationally accredited flower show judge. She has studied gardening everywhere from Arnold Arboretum to the New York Botanical Garden and the New England Wildflower Society.Visit Betty’s website:  http://www.bettyongardening.com/

Sweet White-Fleshed Belle of Georgia Peaches

Ten quarts of ‘Belle of Georgia’ peaches from one little peach tree, peeled, blanched, and freezer-ready for yummy pies and smoothies during the winter months.

Video: Time Lapse Parade of Sails Through Gloucester Inner Harbor

The taller ships start appearing around 1:50, but I liked seeing all the smaller boats, too. Look for the Stanley Thomas lobster boat closer to the beginning. After the Parade I walked out onto the rocky ledge near the Eastern Point Lighthouse, but as you can see in the second-to-last clip, a thunderstorm was on the way and I had to skedadle.

Beautiful Event to film-to many of us, Gloucester is our “somewhere over the rainbow.”

Video: Sista Felicia’s Book “Gifts of Gold” Red Carpet Interviews

The Gifts of Gold Gala Event was a smash hit in every way, from the outstanding hors d’oeurves and refreshments, all prepared from the pages of Gifts of Gold, to the stunning decor, created by Felicia, Daphne, and friends. Lillian, Rick, and Joey are wonderful interviewers and, with everyone there to celebrate Felicia’s much deserved success, there are lots of sweet moments in the video. Thank you Sista Felicia for a wonderfully memorable evening!

The Always Super Delicious Passports Restaurant Lunch

Passports Pulled Pork Sandwich ©Kim Smith 2013

Lunch at Passports is always a treat. Daughter Liv had the very filling and super yummy pulled pork sandwich. I had the wonderfully tasty and seafood-rich Adriatic stew. I only had my iPhone with me and didn’t get a great snapshot of our waitress Laila, but she was wonderful as well. Thanks Laila and Eric for the fabulous lunch!

Video: Sunset Sail Aboard the Gorgeous Schooner Thomas E. Lannon

Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.

I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun.  I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!

Meet Hannah Scialdone Kimberley

Hannh Kimberley Craig Kimberley ©2013

If someone had told me twenty years ago that my life’s passion would be dedicated to the field of education, I would have probably burst into laughter. In fact, I got most of the way through college with no intention to work with children. I didn’t really have any experience with kids. I had one older sibling, many older cousins, and two failed attempts at babysitting under my belt. I double majored in History and Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico, and planned to apply to law school. As a young, idealistic college student, I imagined myself defending the rights of others – a female Atticus Finch. It seemed like a great plan as far as I was concerned – until one of my classmates told me about a part-time job teaching English to students from other countries. And so the educator spark in me was ignited.

In the last fifteen years, I have earned a Master’s Degree, a PhD, and experienced the best job ever: teaching little kids, teenagers, and adults. To learn more about my background and why I want to serve on our School Committee, read on…  kimberlyforkids
