Sugar Mags vs Classic Cooks HUGE REMATCH for the First Seafood Throwdown this Thursday ~ 4pm at the Farmers Market ~ Stage Fort Park

Last year Julie Geary claimed the title from four-time winner, previously undefeated Missy Hart of Sugar Magnolias in an extraordinarily close contest, full of mouthwatering anticipation and suspense.  See the video that Joey made of that throwdown here:

Below is a quick press release from Throwdown master organizer, Sandy Farrell.

Our “Hotter Than July!” rematch pits Missy Hart’s Team Sugar Magnolia with Lydia Sands and Santos Carvalho against Julie Geary’s Team from Classic Cooks. Watch closely as both of these teams bring years of experience to the table. Grant writer, organic farmer at Beacon Street Farm, and head of the Backyard Growers Program, Lara Lepionka will be judging the event with her critical eye. Steve Parkes, the “Fillet King” will lead a demonstration showing how to fillet a whole fish and break down the process so that you can feel confident in the kitchen. Join emcee Peter Van Ness of gimmesound.com this Thursday, July 26 at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. This is our second year at Stage Fort Park where the parking is always free on Market afternoons from 3pm on. The SeaFood Throwdown starts at 4pm.

Another judge or two will be announced soon.  Hope to see you there!

“Stay in the street,” we tell the Zip Line Kid, who sees 20 friends at the Block Party

No pictures (if you want pictures click here).  Just a quick note to say that one main goal of the Block Parties (to build community) was realized last night for kids and adults alike.

Now that John has his own phone (more about that here) we figured he could enjoy a bit of freedom at the Block Party as long as he stayed within the blocked-off section of Main St.  (sounds funny telling your kid to stay IN the street) and checked in with us every fifteen minutes or so.

At the end of the night, I asked how many friends he saw.  “At least 20,” was his immediate answer.  “Kids from the cast [Holiday Delights], kids from school, kids from camp, kids from St. Ann’s, kids from all over.”

Vickie and I connected with at least as many — and met a few new friends.

The Block Party worked!

But there’s more — a dozen live music choices on Cape Ann today.  Keep the momentum going.  Don’t stay home.  Check them out here.

See “Rock Stars of Gloucester” tonight ~ in the flesh and oil

Allen Estes ~ oil on canvas by Laureen Maher

Just in case you’ve been under a rock for the past couple of weeks and don’t know that Gloucester’s biggest block party ever starts at 6 tonight, you can click here to read some posts about it.  Okay, now you know.

Celebrating Gloucester’s extraordinary music scene has become a Block Party tradition — and we do it by putting musicians and dancers on the street, right in front of our celebrated shops and restaurants.  (see schedule here)

Fly Amero ~ oil on canvas by Laureen Maher

In this spirit, Laureen Maher will be putting her series of oils on canvas, entitled “Rock Stars of Gloucester” on display at Fred Bodin’s Historic Photo Gallery at 82 Main Street, right next to the Sargent Stage (see map here) where one of the rock stars in her collection, Allen Estes, will be performing with his son Dylan.

Other Rock Stars of Gloucester on display tonight (in oil) will be JB Amero, Dave Sag, Inge Berge, Willie Alexander featured with Greg Tower and Ed Savage, Rik Razdan featured with Lisa Marie — and Fly Amero (who may appear in the flesh with his sister, Linda, at the Franklin Stage).

So dine, dance and shop under the stars tonight in Gloucester.  You’ll have more fun than you think you deserve.

A dozen venues with Live Music Tonight ~ and 2 of them are floating!

Being a waterfront community, you’d expect Cape Ann to have plenty of restaurants, pubs & live music venues on the water — and we do.  Tonight we also have two that are IN the water — literally.  The Schooner Thomas E. Lannon is hosting a bluegrass sunset sail at 6pm featuring local legend Allen Estes with Gloucester’s best bluegrass musicians and Gloucester’s newest schooner, Ardelle, built by Howard Burnham (who build the Lannon) is hosting a sail at the same time with doo-wop/oldies girl group Honky Tonk Women of Glocuester.

Now, there are plenty of choices for those of you who wish to remain on land, from jazz standards, reggae, rock, funk, soul, motown — you name it.  See the full live music lineup here.

You know you’re in the middle of a paradigm shift when the best way to inspire the Zip Line Kid to read & write over the summer turns out to be getting him a phone

My aunt says not to worry.  “You just don’t see 9-year-old boys curling up with a good book during the summer.”

Why should I listen?  My Aunt Mary taught “grammar school” for decades; plus she taught me all the 2nd grade I needed to get into 3rd grade in about a month over the summer of 1963 (yes, dating myself — Vickie’s no where near this old).

I had spent the prior academic year in the Kindergarten row of a two room school-house in Céligny Switzerland because I couldn’t speak enough French to do 2nd grade work.  That’s right Kindergarten row.  You see, there were six rows in one room (K-5) with Madame Fiorina – and she was scary.  Grades 6, 7 & 8 were in another room with Monsieur Fiorina.  He was terrifying!

I hadn’t read, written  or spelled anything in English for a year — and I hadn’t done any subtraction, which is about all the math taught in a U.S. 2nd grade class back in 1962.

Anyhow, Aunt Mary reminded me last weekend that all I wanted to do during the summer was go out and play — just like John.  “It’s normal.  Don’t worry,” she advised confidently.

Back to phones.  We didn’t think we were getting John a phone in order to encourage him to read.  But that’s what happened.  Maybe it’s because this phone has a keyboard, which he likes because it makes it easier for him to text.  And that’s nearly all he uses it for.  Great — he’s reading!

I told John that, about 100 years ago, this guy invented a device that empowered you to have a conversation with another person in real-time.  You didn’t have to type anything.  You didn’t have to read a screen.  You could even close your eyes if you wanted.  I didn’t have to look for my glasses in order to use it.

He gives me a quizzical look for a moment and then, in disgust, blurts out “Oh, Dad,” with that pre-teen attitude you get when you ask if he’s brushed his teeth after he actually has.  Then he turns back to finish texting his cousin in CT.  I hear a bleep from his phone.  Deftly he switches to answer a text from his brother, who’s in the next room.

We’re witnessing the advent of a new era, folks!

Got kids? Take ’em to the Block Party. It’s Free and Fun on Saturday.

I just spoke with Rick Doucett, whom you all know and love from the YMCA.  Rick reminded me that he and his wife, Loren, will be running Kids Town at the Block Party on Saturday (just like last year).   Kid’s Town is between Pleasant St. & Hancock St. near the Sovereign Stage (see map here).

Balloons, face painting, giant chess and more.  Every year kids connect with friends at the Block Party that they haven’t seen in a while (just like adults do).  How many things can you do that are just as much fun for your kids as they are for you?

Speaking of kids, don’t forget Y summer camp is in full swing (see here).

Don’t forget that the Orleans concert on Aug 31 — featuring Gloucester’s own Fly Amero along with Rhode Island’s John Cafferty of the Beaver Brown band and Eddie and the Cruisers movie will help raise money for the North Shore YMCA Summer Camp program.

And just in case you missed Monday’s announcement (click here if you did) Allen Estes will open the show.  You won’t want to miss this!

You and your kids can see Allen Estes at the Block Party on Saturday at the Sargent Stage.

And if we’re lucky,  we may also get to hear Fly sing with his sister at the Franklin Stage.

See Block Party Entertainment Schedule here.

After the Block Party winds down, many Gloucester venues will continue music into the wee hours, so there’s no reason to go home when the music on the street ends.  One of my favorite bands (KBMG Electric) will be heating things up at Minglewood Tavern.

See the complete Saturday music lineup here.

SNAFU Fixed ~ VIP Tickets added to Chamber Live Auction

It’s been one of those days.  First I learned that a poster and banner that I had proofed and approved had the wrong song title on it.  Then I find out we somehow didn’t get the information on our donation to the Chamber Auction to the right person.  But Vickie raced around, made a bunch of phone calls, opened up PhotoShop and was able to save the day.

Why do you care?  Because you can now go to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Auction on Thursday at 5pm at Woodmans and bid on 2 VIP Tickets to Orleans LIVE in concert on Friday, August 31 at North Shore Music Theatre.  And if you’ve been following GMG today, you’ll know who’s opening (click here if you missed the announcement).

VIP tickets are really the way to go to a concert.  You get the best seats, 3 course gourmet dinner (see menu here) Meet & Greet with the stars, pre-show party, free premium parking, a special gift from Orleans’ personal vault and more.  See details here.

The Auction has other spectacular items too and you always get a good deal, so if you like getting good stuff for less than it’s worth, be sure to go.  If you don’t already have Auction tickets contact Tim Burton at tim@capeannchamber.com or call 978-283-1601.

Now, have a look at the poster to the right.  Leave a comment correcting the incorrect song title and we’ll enter you into a contest to win free tickets.

Allen Estes will open for Orleans at North Shore Music Theatre on August 31

You know that being an FOB means you’re the very first to get the scoop on what’s up in Gloucester.  Well, Allen Estes just agreed to open for Orleans and we’re telling you BEFORE we even update the website.  We’ll do that later tonight.  In the meantime, you can get tickets here.

Here’s a video of Allen singing one of his new songs The Trouble with Me — destined to be a hit.  If you like the song, you can catch Allen with his son Dylan at the Block Party on Saturday and ask him to include it in his set at North Shore Music Theatre.

Decompression Unplugged ~ hot sound, tight harmony

A good way to judge the quality of an electric band is to hear them unplugged.  This video proves that The Bandit Kings are one of Gloucester’s best.  Here they are unplugged on a tiny TV set delivering all the power and energy of their fully electric shows.  Plus Renee and Ann Marie’s harmonies are perfect!

The video above features one of three of their songs from their excellent show (Decompression off their excellent Precious Stones CD — get it here).

You can see the entire show this week on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 beginning Wednesday at 6:3opm.  It also features one of Allen Estes‘ very popular (relatively new) songs, Peace and Harmony, which is not available anywhere for download or on CD.  This is part of our summer reprise of the most requested shows from Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.

If you don’t have cable or you don’t live in Gloucester you can watch the entire show on-line here.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait until Wednesday to see the Bandit Kings.  Go to the Rhumb Line tonight where they host the open jam to get your fix of one of Gloucester’s most distinctive sounds.  And check out the enterprising way they are raising money to make a new record — a very good cause, indeed.  I just donated and can’t wait to hear the new album.

“He who does not eat cheese, will go mad.”

This French proverb is printed on T Shirts and hangs over the door at The Cave — 44 Main St.  For some reason, it took Vickie and me 3 weeks to get there, but we finally made it yesterday and boy are we glad we did.  Then we took our bounty to a friend’s house.  The best way to  enjoy good food is with good friends, each being enhanced by the other.  Check out the video to see what we got and how it tasted.

Laura, who owns The Cave, tells me she’s got a 3 year lease and they will be open year round.  Sounds like a plan to me.  Vickie and I will be in again soon.

Just as The Cave has something for every palate, tonight there’s music for every possible taste on Cape Ann from string quartet to bluegrass to rock, soul, reggae, pop, New Orleans jazz, blues, metal, singer/songwriters — you name it.  Don’t stay home.  Check the live music lineup and get out on the town!

38 artists at 21 venues this weekend. How do you choose?

No, you can’t see them all.  You’re just gonna have to pick your favorites.  We can help.  First, you can see a complete live music lineup here.  And if you’re not sure who you might like, you can  see 15 Artists of the week in over 75 videos too.

Here are a very few suggestions in various genres (this is NOT an exhaustive list of who you might enjoy — see that here)

If you’ve never seen rocker Ned and the Big Babies, you should  catch them tonight at the Rhumb Line.  You’ll be dancin’ — believe me.

If you missed The Runaround Sound high energy ska, reggae, punk-rock band at the Boulevard on July 3, you can catch them tonight at Capt Carlo’s and tomorrow at the Rhumb Line.   You’ll get a workout if you go to both shows, so no need to go to the gym this weekend.

If you like New Orleans Jazz & Blues and you missed Henri Smith opening for Aaron Neville on June 30, you can catch him at the Brew Pub on Saturday (see Henri Smith videos here)  Henri is also opening the Gloucester Blues Festival on August 11.

Also on Saturday is the latest in T Max’s concert series at the Dog Bar.  This time he mixes bluegrass from Tom Eaton & Pick 3 with singer/songwriter Jon Waterman and his own style that’s a must-see but impossible to peg.

On Sunday music begins at 10:30am at Seaward Inn in Rockport and continues all day with two free outdoor concerts: Michael O’Leary’s Celtic music at Halibut Point State Park at 2:30 and the Compaq Big Band at Stage Fort Park at 7pm.

Remember this a very small list of a few highlights.  Check all shows before you decide where to go.

Joey – our child is all grown up!

Downtown Gloucester Block Party

With apologies to all the good people who run the block parties now, I finally finished the new Block Party website with 9 days to spare before the first block party NEXT SATURDAY, JULY 21!

This block party crew has really taken it to a whole new level (more music, more dancing, more dining, more entertainment, magic, etc,) and next Saturday, you’ll see what I mean — our child is all grown up!

They call themselves Blockheads (see a whole page about them here) and they asked that I keep the page about the founders and guess what?  I found a picture of an original Block Party committee meeting taken by our boy Joey using a timer (If you want to know why we’re all smiling so much click here and find out).

So what ever your plans are for the rest of this month, be sure to go downtown next Saturday at 6pm — stores are open ’till 11!

See you there . . .

Something Big that Chronicle Missed

Gloucester has been featured on Chronicle once again and this time they focus on tourism, art, fishing & Fiesta — mostly the greasy pole.  And while the show sheds a fairly good light on Gloucester, it misses one of the our City’s main attractions  — Gloucester’s burgeoning music scene (see tonight’s live music lineup here).

That’s why we’re so lucky to have lured T Max here — publisher of The Noise (New England’s longest running music magazine).  The new issue features stories about music on Cape Ann as well as music on that shark-infested cape named after a fish.  (On the web, the stories are after the features on Brad Byrd from Cape Ann and The Parkington Sisters from Cape Cod).

I was going to thank T Max for the honor of being chosen to write the story about Cape Ann (read it here), but instead I’ll  complain that what I had feared has come to pass: good musicians whom I neglected to mention are asking me why I left them out.  There’s no good answer to that question.  My only excuse is that with limited space and time to write I simply couldn’t include everyone who’s good.  Lame, isn’t it.  Sorry.

Perhaps the next Chronicle story on Gloucester will include at least one segment on Gloucester’s music.  I keep that hope alive given that they referred to Fiesta as Gloucester’s own Mardi Gras, which is, of course, a musical metaphor.

Boston Latin Reggae comes to Gloucester tonight

Gloucester’s newest music venue Mile Marker One features one of Boston’s best Latin/Reggae bands Los Sugar Kings tonight at 7pm.  With just a little thinking ahead, you can schedule a perfect musical night starting at 5pm with Michael O’Leary and Friends aboard the Schooner Lannon, then on to Mile Marker One, then over to the Dog Bar at 9 to catch the Bandit Kings with Joe Wilkins.

If none of those artists tickles your fancy there are half a dozen others to choose from.  See the complete live music lineup here.

Does anyone have video of The Runaround on July 3?

The Runaround Sound July 3 2011

Well, I guess that’s what happens when a couple thousand people are transfixed by one of Gloucester’s best bands — NOBODY FILMS!  If you were on the Boulevard on July 3, and you shot some video, please leave a comment.  Better yet, make a YouTube account and upload the video and then put the YouTube link in your comment.

And in case you missed The Runaround at the Boulevard on July 3, you can catch them tonight at the Dog Bar.  Honestly, they are NOT TO BE MISSED!

But if you can’t get into the Dog Bar because it’s packed, check out over a dozen other excellent live music choices here.
