Cape Ann TV Waltzes in with the Premiere of The Beeman Ballroom Experience Documentary in Conjunction with the Gloucester Fifth Grade Mad Hot Ball
What happens when you take a whole fifth grade class, mix in some cha-cha and waltzes, and what do you get? Join Cape Ann TV as they premiere, The Beeman Ballroom Experience, a half-hour documentary showcasing the four month journey of the Beeman Memorial Elementary School’s 2012 fifth grade students as they begin learning the steps to classic dances in their music classes to the District-Wide Mad Hot Ball Competition, and through these experiences mature and grow into confident young adolescents.
Started in the early 2000s, the Gloucester fifth grade dance program has been funded in part by the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) for all of the five Gloucester Elementary schools. Maggie Rosa, President of the Gloucester Education Foundation, says that the “Social skills these children learn are impressive.” Tina and Ron LaFlam, from Miss Tina’s School of Dance, teach the children the art of ballroom dancing. All the student’s hard work and hours of practicing culminates into a final Ball where each pair gets to dance for their families and a panel of judges. Carrie, one of the students interviewed, says that she was “scared” at the beginning of the dance program because she thought some were going to be better then others, but through the process realized that everyone was equal in their ability to dance.
This documentary shows how ballroom dancing still has a place in modern society. It was filmed by Cape Ann TV with CATV staff and Beeman parent volunteer, David Lufkin, and edited by Gordon College Student/Cape Ann TV intern Greg Dry and Cape Ann TV’s Lisa Smith. Ms. Wentzal and Ms. Lafata, two Beeman teachers who were interviewed in the film, say that the children take pride in their accomplishments at the end of the program and at the competition Ball, and that their academics became stronger as a reflection of the things they have learned.

This year’s Gloucester Fifth Grade District-Wide Mad Hot Ballroom Competition is Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Award-winning, local, world-class composer Rob Bradshaw’s new work premieres this Sunday 5/5 at Gordon Chapel with 2 performances at 2:30 and 5pm. You may know Rob from over 20 works commissioned and performed about Cape Ann, including the cantata commemorating the Middle Street Fire, Requiem for Rockport and music for the dedication of the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives statue and Schooner Adventure.
Beyond Gloucester, Rob’s works have been performed all over the world from Bangkok, Thailand, to Sydney, Australia. In America, his works have been heard in many prestigious venues including Lincoln Center and during The Kennedy Center’s 2010 International VSA Festival at the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Sidney Harman Hall.
Here’s what he says about Las Apariencias Engañan, which premieres on Saturday as part of The Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras Spring Afternoon Concert. This concert is free and open to the public and appeals to all ages. Each concert will last between an hour and two hours and both will be followed by a reception after the performance. The NMYO Silent Auction will take place during the concerts as well.

For Vickie, John and me it’s breakfast at Atlantis Oceanfront Cafe, which opens on Saturday.
For those of us who live here, hotels are not always top of mind, but this is one of the best breakfast places anywhere.
Gorgeous view of the atlantic and the Twin Lights. Warm, clean, sunny dining room. Relaxed environment with excellent sound. I know most people don’t consider sound high on their list of restaurant priorities, but I do.
It’s breakfast. That means morning. And the last thing I want to deal with first thing in the morning is loud ambient noise making it hard to talk–or even think–over breakfast.
Of course, the food is excellent–and fun. Spectacular sticky buns. Home-made corned beef hash, fish cakes, quiche, etc. They even have a Monte Cristo.
John loves the pancakes. Vickie usually has an omelet or quiche special. My favorite is the Lobster Eggs Benedict they often offer as a special. Whatever you choose, there’s no need for lunch. They’re open 7:30-11. You might want to call and see how busy they are 978-283-0014.
Renee & Joe on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 Wednesday (tonight), at 6:30pm and airs again Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.
The Cripple Cove Quintet featuring The Goddesses will be performing three sets of pre-Beatles and Pub Rock at The Rhumb Line on Friday, May 3rd starting at 9:30pm. The CCQ consists of husband and wife harmonizing duo Tony and Samantha Goddess plus Pete Koeplin on drums, Ryan Alto on bass, and Geoff Small on guitar. No Cover/21+.

Patty Larkin is playing Shalin Liu on Sunday May 5th. Patty was born in Iowa, grew up in Milwaukee went to college in Oregon and then arrived at Berklee College of Music in the mid 1980’s but Patty Larkin calls Cape Cod home, so Patty Larkin is a Boston area musician. Patty Larkin is a self-described “guitar driven songwriter” with an impressive 25 year career as one of the great voices of the contemporary urban folk scene. A winner of an unprecedented 11 Boston Music Awards. Check her out and go see her.

You may know Ted Reinstein from the award-winning TV show Chronicle on Channel 5.
I’ve been a fan for years and was lucky enough to meet Ted when he produced Chronicle’s feature of Gloucester in 2007 right after Celebrate Gloucester and the opening of Cruiseport.
After covering every corner of New England for 16 years, Ted has made good on his claim, “I have enough stories to fill a book!” Now he’s about to release what National Geographic Traveler has named one of “The Best Travel Books of Spring.” And look at what’s on the cover!
Ted sent me a pre-release copy of his chapter on Cape Ann, which he aptly titled The Other Cape. Here’s how it begins:
Obviously written from the heart, Ted describes Gloucester as “America’s most authentic, enduring working waterfront.” The chapter is filled with quotes by–and stories about–local fishermen, artists, photographers and others along with some excellent photos.
This captivating, well-written book isn’t just a travelogue. It’s a gem that everyone who lives here and cares about this place would want to own. New England Notebook hasn’t been released yet, but you can pre-order a copy now — right here.
Ted tells me he’s planning to come to The Other Cape to do a reading at some point. We’ll be sure to let you know when and where as soon as it’s scheduled. Perhaps you can get your book signed!

Vieaux’s concert is part of its 2012-13 new Guitar Series. The evening will traverse the Baroque period with Bach’s Lute Suite No. 1 in E Minor, which Vieaux will play on guitar; the 19th century with Giuliani’s Grand Overture, Op. 61, as well as Albéniz’ Sevilla (arranged by Vieaux); the 20th century with Benjamin Britten’s reflection on Dowland’s music (Nocturnal after John Dowland), Antônio Carlos Jobim’s A Felicidade, José Luis Merlín’s Suite del Recuerdo, and Vieaux’s arrangement of Pat Metheny’s The Bat; and the 21st century with the Massachusetts premiere of Dan Visconti’s Devil’s Strum, written for Vieaux in 2010.

We see one of our roles, here at GMG, as making sure you know who’s on the way to making it big. Rockport native, Brad Byrd is one of those local musicians. Some day, when Brad’s playing stadiums and you can’t get a ticket for under 200 bucks, you’ll be saying, “I saw him at the Dog Bar in Gloucester, Mass!” But only if you get down to the Dog Bar tomorrow (THURSDAY) where he’s on at 9pm.
Tonight you can see Brad on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which airs at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. In this show, Brad’s hypnotic voice draws you into his world where you’ll notice that every one of his lyrics is perfectly placed and there isn’t a single extra word. This is some of the best songwriting you’ll hear.
When this show premiered last June, Allen introduced an excellent new song, “The Trouble with Me”. Here’s a taste:

The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is very excited about the
opportunity to perform their spring concert “Music Shall Live” at 7:00 PM
on Friday, May 3rd at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport.
This 50 member choir of youth ages 10 through high school come from 16
communities across the North Shore.
The program is comprised of songs that are an invitation to sing and
include music from the Renaissance period to folk songs. The title of the
concert “Music Shall Live” comes from an early German round about music, a
song that the choir will perform.
The choir is directed by Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and accompanied by Dr. Frank
Corbin.

The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is an outstanding group of 50
talented young local musicians. They come together to learn the discipline
and joy of shared music–and many go on to study music in college. The
children come from communities all over the North Shore–from Rockport to
Newburyport and Marblehead–and represent the diversity of the area with
children from public and private schools and several who are home schooled.
The Choir’s repertoire includes work by Faure, Brahms, Handel, Mozart,
Britten, and Bernstein. They regularly sing with the Chorus North Shore,
matching the discipline of the 125-voice adult chorus.
The Honors Youth Choir is a fully funded program allowing students aged ten
through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks
and present extraordinary concerts. The singers are selected by audition and
must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. Chorus North Shore artistic
director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and executive director Mary Sepich bring
their experience as lifelong educators and musicians to the planning and
development of this special group.
Bob Hastings, co-producer of the Gloucester Blues Festival, sent me an email this morning saying they just signed Lydia Warren. We saw her open for Savoy Brown at the Bull Run on December 1 (see post about that concert here). Alone on stage with her strat, she captured the crowd with her soulful vitality. At the Blues Fest, she’ll have her full band!

36 performers on Cape Ann this weekend — remember, by my definition, the weekend starts on Thursdays. Tonight we’ve got the Singer/Songwriter Shuffle starting at 7, featuring some of the area’s best, including Inge Berge, whose new children’s album (see this post for more info) was featured in today’s Gloucester Times (see article here).
After the shuffle, you can catch award winning Indie Rocker, Bray Byrd at Dog Bar starting at 9. Music starts at 7pm tomorrow, 10:30 AM on Saturday and 11:30 AM on Sunday, so plenty of opportunities to get the kids out to listen. See the full schedule here.

More than likely you know someone who was at the Marathon. Here’s a small-world example: Vickie’s brother-in-law works for a medical device company in Cedar Falls, Iowa and his boss is the father of the eight-year-old boy who died. Even if you don’t know someone who was there, you’re probably reeling from the shock that terrorism has struck so close to home. I know I am.
Music has a way of healing wounds of all kinds. And musicians have known this since humans began making music (when ever that was).
I was Speaking with T Max today about this and he gave me a quote perfect for this week from Leonard Bernstein, one of my musical heroes — I watched his Young People’s Concerts on TV as a kid (see them on YouTube here). He says,
“This will be our reply to violence:
to make music more intensely,
more beautifully,
more devotedly than ever before.”
Maestro Bernstein’s healing words ring true as local musicians carry his reply to over a dozen venues in Gloucester and Cape Ann this week. See the complete live music schedule here.
Tonight T Max is Fly Amero’s guest at The Rhumb Line. (Fly’s on the cover of T Max’s Noise Magazine this month — read the story here). Both T Max and Fly are tuned into the power of music to heal (here’s one example of how Fly transformed a dark day).
Tomorrow there’s another Singer/Songwriter Shuffle at Giuseppe’s with top local stars, including Inge Berge, Satch Kerans, Steve Caraway, Will Hunt, Randy Black, Brian O’Connor & Jake Pardee. And just like last week you will still have time to catch rising star Brad Byrd at The Dog Bar after the Shuffle. Currently I’m under an intense deadline that is forcing me to work late, but one way or the other, we’ll try to get to at least one local live music show over the next week or so. And I’m sure it will help us heal.
