Anne and Christopher Lewis held a party for major donors to the Dog Park along with the Dog Park Construction Team. Everyone was updated on the significant progress that has been made this Spring. We would very much appreciate some space in GMG to tell people about the progress and that we only need to raise a further $65,000 to complete the project.
June 24, 2012, Dog Park News
On Sunday, June 24, 2012, Anne and Christopher Lewis hosted a party, at their home in East Gloucester for major donors to the Dog Park along with the Dog Park Construction team. Among the attendees were: John Dugger, Chair of the Dog Park committee along with construction team member, Nikki Bach of Inside Edge Builders together with major donors, who included Jason and Shelly Sevinor of Salem Plumbing in Gloucester, Anne Lewis, ‘The Cat Doctor of Gloucester,” and Beth and Linzee Coolidge of the Dusky Foundation.” Major donations totaling $151,500 have been committed by seven individuals, three corporations and one foundation. Completion of the project will require further donations of $65,000. The Dusky Foundation will match the first $25,000. If you would like to help us finish the project , please call 978 879 9283
Construction
Construction is under way at Stage Fort Park. The foundation has been built and the sheds, which were built by the Gloucester High School carpentry shop students under the guidance of Dana Griffin, are in place on the foundation of the entryway. This has all come about thanks to the donated services of the building committee working on a landscape plan by Hugh J. Collins Associates of Wenham.
Entryway and Dog Shelters
The Landscape designer is currently working on a detailed plan for the tree and plant layout and water needs. As soon as a trench is made for the water line, the entryway will be completed. All materials for the entryway pergola will be donated by Precision Roofing and Timberline. Two anonymous donations have been received for the large dog area and small dog area shelters.
Water Station and Solar power
Arrangements have been made with the City of Gloucester to tap the City water main. After this is completed it will then be possible to install the water stations in the large dog and small dog areas. These stations have been donated by Shelly & Jason Sevinor of Salem Plumbing Supply in Gloucester and Dr. Ray Cahill of Seaport Veterinary Hospital. The building committee is working with a potential donor on the installation of solar panels.
Timeline
The best estimate for the grand opening of the Dog Park is late fall 2012 or early spring 2013. This depends on how the transplanted trees grow, which will determine when the final grading can be done and the fence installed.
Jason Sevinor of Salem Plumbing in Gloucester, Dr. Ray Cahill of Seaport Veterinary Hospital, Shelly Sevinor, John Dugger, Chair of the Dog Park Committee, Chef Kim Johnson and Dr. Anne Lewis of the "Cat Doctor of Gloucester" at the major donor event in East Gloucester
Linzee Coolidge of the Dusky Foundation and Maggie Cahill
Suzyn Ornstein and B.J. Wayne, the artist and musician, with "Thank you" dog Biscuits by Chef Kim
Chef Kim Johnson, Shelly and Jason Sevinor of Salem Plumbing in Gloucester with Dr. Anne’s dogs, Sangha and Kami

On Tuesday, July 26 Ethan Hughes will be presenting his story about the Bicycling Super Heroes and the Possibility Alliance at the Sawyer Free Library from 6:30 PM to 8:PM in the Friend Room (the bottom floor of the library).
The presentation will be free and open to all ages. Ten years ago a group of forty bicycle riders crossed the country from Seattle to Gloucester dressed as Superheroes doing random acts of kindness and service. The self created superheroes include Compashman, the Golden Rule, Love Ninja, Beatidude, Huggernaught, and Wander Woman.
Ethan Hughes, a Gloucester native ended the ride in Gloucester after a four month 5,500 mile odyssey which led them to find missing lost white water rafters, building a handicapped ramp at a women’s shelter, growing organic food for inner city homeless families and moving baseball bleachers in a small mid west town to name a few of the deeds.
Our final good deed was painting a mural at Wellspring in Gloucester. Ten years later, there are now 700 superheroes in the organization, including a 110 acre headquarters in La Plata, Missouri. The group has crossed 26 states and 6 countries helping out wherever there is a need.
We also sent 45 superheroes to assist in the clean up after Hurricane Katrina.
The 110 acre service and simplicity center known as The Possibility Alliance hosts over 1500 people a year from all over the world and sends hundreds of volunteers to the inner city, in nursing homes, public schools, and other organizations working towards a healthy society and world. At superhero H. Q. we grow our own organic food, travel by bicycle and horse and build our own homes by hand, and thrive without the use of electricity and petroleum.
( Our super powers come in handy)
We want to see a world where people live out their heart’s callings and wildest dreams.
The presentation will talk about these projects and provide concrete tools for manifesting your vision.
Please come and enjoy a night of laughter, inspiration and possibility.
Optional: Bring your superhero cape.
"With life as short as a half-taken breath, don’t plan anything but love" ______ Rumi
*The Gloucester Times did a front page article about the Superhero ride ten years ago. The above is a brief update of what has transpired since that article.
If you would like more information please call 978-879-4909. We have also appeared in Reader’s Digest, Mother Earth News, N.P.R., and other Media. You can find out more online if you google The Possibility Alliance.
Thank you for your time and energy. It is an honor to share this journey with my home town!
Sincerely, Ethan Hughes
Long-awaited discounts for small businesses are here. The Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (MACCE) recently introduced the Chamber Health Coop, a group purchasing program that makes health insurance more affordable for businesses with 1 to 50 full-time employees.
Any small business that belongs to one of the more than 60 participating Chambers of Commerce and other business associations is eligible to join the Chamber Health Coop. The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce is among this first wave of organizations to make the program available to its members.
Our members can save hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on their health insurance from Fallon Community Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Health New England, which are each discounting several of their plans. Fallon and Harvard Pilgrim are trimming rates by 3 percent, and Health New England by 5 percent. Business with a maximum of 50 employees who work 30 or more hours a week can now enroll for coverage beginning as soon August.
“The Commonwealth is pleased to support the new Chamber Health Coop through MACCE," said Governor Deval Patrick. "Small businesses are vital to our continued economic success here in the Commonwealth and we need more innovative programs like the coop to reduce the high costs of health care that inhibit growth and development."
“Chambers have fought for years to lower the cost of health insurance. We are pleased that Governor Patrick, Senate President Murray, and Speaker DeLeo share this aim and helped pave the way for group purchasing cooperatives,” said MACCE President Tom O’Rourke. “The Chamber Health Coop will give businesses one more tool they can use to lower the cost of insurance for themselves and their employees.”
In addition to offering savings on health insurance plans, the Chamber Health Coop provides wellness programs to help employees live healthier lives that in turn may help keep premium costs at bay. The health and wellness offering is free for all covered employees and their families.
The Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives represents the 100+ Chambers of Commerce in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MACCE’s mission is to be an accessible and valuable resource to the chamber professionals serving our state’s communities. MACCE provides a wide-range of resources and opportunities for all chamber professionals and their member businesses.

Dear friends, residents of Gloucester and art lovers! I would like to invite you all to the closing reception of my Goetemann artist residence which will take place on June 27th 2012 at 7pm at my studio on 51 A Rocky Neck Ave.
I am having an absolutely wonderful time on the Rocky Neck and I am in love with the community, scenery and my little studio. I have done a lot during my stay and I would love to show you my works that I have produced in June:
Gloucester in fog, sunset over the city or my hand-caught and collected squid ink sketches. All works will be displayed and be available for sale. At 8pm I will give a little speech about my experience at the residency and will answer all the questions if you have any.
I am looking forward to see you soon!
p.s. I also need your help with naming my works. If you recognize the view I painted in the work attached to this post, please comment!

I don’t even know where to begin on this atrocity- and in our own back yard, a local.
I will say up front Anadama bread on it’s own- Fantastic.
For the love of christ, not on a lobster roll. and then to add lettuce and celery??????
I see what you’re doing here Melissa Abbott, you’re trying to get inside my head. You’re taunting me. Saying I know how I’ll get Joey C to feature my blog on his site. I’ll bastardize the one thing that there can not be any dispute about in an attempt to explode his brain.
It’s lobster, it’s tradition. Why do we feel it necessary to mess it up. Can’t we all agree that Andama bread is OUTSTANDING for French toast. I’ll even go as far as to say it’s THE BEST bread on the planet for French Toast. But please get that shit away from my lobster rolls. It’s an outrage. It’s an atrocity. It’s unforgivable.
www.GloucesterGourmet.com ? Uhm you may want to rethink the title of your new blog to www.GloucesterNoYouGourmet-not.com
I can’t go on. I’ve got a headache. People, want to let Melissa know what’s up here in this latest of all crimes committed against tradition and all that is good and sacred in the lobster world.
Look at this bullshit would you-
photo from www.gloucetergourmet.com a demonstration on how to mess up a really good thing
her ingredients-
Lobster Salad Recipe
Fresh Lobster Meat slightly chopped
Freshly chopped celery FAIL
Cains Mayonnaise
Red Leaf Lettuse from my Garden FAIL
It’s simple people- The split top bun. Not Baguette, Not a goddamn Panini, not a Saint Joseph’s roll and No, Not on Anadama bread.
A split top bun in which you slather on the butter and grill to a golden brown, then you add the cold lobstermeat mixed with a dollop of Cains mayo. That’s it. Nothing green, no paprika, no celery, no onion, no pickle no other frou frou bananahead ingredients.
How many times do we have to go over this?
Don’t out-think tradition. Don’t out-think perfection. You’re gonna go and mess up the lobster roll’s good name because you’re jumping the shark on this, trust me.
Congratulations Melissa You Made It To The Big Time- A Feature On GMG

On the next Cape Ann Profiles show host Rich Sagall interviews Cape Ann TV interns Alexis Cruz and Tierny McTiernan. They are local high school students who relate their experiences at CATV, describe what they are learning, and how other students can benefit by becoming involved at the station.
Cape Ann Profiles can be seen on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 on Friday, June 29 at 10:30AM and 7:00PM and on Sunday, July 1 at 2:00PM. It repeats on Friday, July 6 at 10:30AM and 7:00PM and on Sunday, July 8 at 2:00PM.
Legendary jazz concert promoter Fred Taylor and publicity luminary Sue Auclair were feted at the Rudder Saturday night by local pals Ellyn Baltz and Block Party Block Heads Judith Brackley and Valerie Marcley.
Fred has produced everyone from John Coltrane to the Bobs Dylan and Marley. If you’ve seen a jazz concert in Boston, it was probably one of Fred’s. Throughout his lifelong commitment to music and breaking talent he has introduced us to Richard Prior, Earth Wind and Fire, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pat Metheny and countless others at his respected jazz clubs, Pall’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop on Boylston Street – remember them? Sue works closely with Fred and for years with the Newport Jazz, Newport Folk, Boston Globe, Tanglewood Jazz and a billion festivals through her Sue Auclair Promotions. The talent these two have worked with – when will they write their books?
Miles Davis once acquiesced that Fred was hipper than he! Sue and Fred handled Miles’ comeback in 1981. Fred’s still producing concerts and is the Entertainment Director of Sculler’s Jazz Club in Allston, turning it into one of the top ten jazz clubs in America.
The lovable Freddy told jokes and did magic tricks to the delight of Rudder patrons. His entourage, always an assortment of adoring women, prompted one woman diner to say, "However old you are, you must be really special to be surrounded by so many beautiful women!" Fred and Sue love the Rudder and come up as often as their schedules allow, and agreed “It’s the tops!” for their dual birthday celebration.
Hey, see our Henri Smith at Sculler’s in August: http://scullersjazz.com/attractions.html?monthnumb=8
Sista Felicia sent me a bunch of pictures from the junior girls Seine Boat practice yesterday and there was something that hit me when looking through the photos. It was the love and dedication that certain people put in to keeping the tradition alive. In this case it happened to be Joanne Frontiero, Joe Balbo,Tim Oakes, Mike Frontiero and Julie Geary but there are many others woven throughout the community that show up year after year to make it all happen.
Every year if you are a lover of Fiesta you recognize the same faces in the Seine Boats, on the Greasy Pole, at The Novena, On the Altar, Walking in the Parade.
When you look through the pictures you will see Joanne climbing over the seats, tying down the oars in place and coaching up the girls. This is not just a tiny bit of work, believe me. and without even speaking to Joanne I know she does it as a labor of love, but it is because of people like Joanne that dedicate to bringing the youngsters into the traditions through patience and love that the rest of us get to enjoy it so very much year after year after year.
The list of people dedicating time, passion and love to our greatest of Gloucester traditions could fill up a page, hopefully throughout the week I’ll get to bring you some of those faces and stories and make you glad you are a subscriber to GMG.
if you are not a subscriber you might just miss some of our awesome coverage of the best part of the year Subscribe here for free
