News from Heidi Dallin

Much like Pat D’s “Barns Along the Way” I like to capture statues that make places unique. One of my favorite is the Swordfish Harpooner that can be seen in the sand dunes in Menemsha Harbor on Martha’s Vineyard. It greeted us at 5:00 am on Saturday morning as my son and nephew rose early to go fishing on the jetty. Click on post for a few more photos.
You can read a bit about it here: http://www.gowildisland.com/Bronzes/Swordfish%20Harpooner/Index.htm

My eye caught this abandoned boat at Lane’s Cove last January. Weathered objects exude so much character and history that I find it to be irresistible imagery. But I’m a little sad that I’ve kept my eye on it throughout the year because the slow disappearance of this boat is disconcerting. Still beautiful and full of character though. These pictures were taken in January, May, July and September. I’ll be going back despite the heartbreak.

Steel Wool and elbow grease. Warm water, a little soap on the scouring pad and scrub scrub scrub til you get rid of the surface rust.
Once you get rid of all the surface rust rinse it out completely and dry with paper towels. Light spray with avocado oil or something with a high smoke point and into a 500 degree pre-heated oven to season. Make sure there’s just a light coating of oil.

Fits on a 22 inch Weber kettle with space to access the flip up grates to add coals on either side of the pan when it’s centered.

CLAIRE WYZENBEEK | Still Alight
October 1 – October 30, 2022
Opening reception: Saturday, October 1st from 2-5pm
Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant St., Gloucester, MA
Works from the exhibition can be viewed at:https://www.janedeeringgallery.com/claire-wyzenbeek-still-alight
The imagery in Claire’s paintings uses life events, emotions and states of awareness as
inspirations. This awareness comes from an internal truth or a deep connection to the natural world. Color has an emotional resonance that is often the starting point of a painting. Her figures and landscapes exist in symbolic settings, painted from both memory and life. Some juxtapose opposing sensations like joy and suffering, or love and anguish. In other works, she explores a specific feeling or physical experience. Recurring themes are renewal, journeys, the female body, relationships, and the spiritual power of Nature.
About the artist
Claire Wyzenbeek holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a Diploma (Painting and Art History) from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts. She maintains a studio in Gloucester on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Wyzenbeek teaches art at Yes Art Space in Beverly, Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited in numerous shows regionally and nationally. Follow her at clairewyzenbeek.com and on Instagram @claire_skylark.

Guest Artist Matthew Billey showing at Seven Suns Gallery Oct. 7 – Nov. 25
Artist Reception: Friday, Oct. 14 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Matthew Billey has been a traditional wooden boat builder for the last 25 years. He has a special interest in Scandinavian designs and construction methods. Matt built and lives aboard his 27’ Danish Cutter, Jette. She appears frequently as the main subject matter in his artwork. His expertise in designing, building and sailing wooden sailboats lends a discerning eye when portraying them accurately in their element.
His 7 year old daughter, Naomi, was a major influence in getting him started as a painter. Since the Spring of 2022, he has made several works based on his interest in metaphysics, global ascension, astrology, perception beyond the ordinary five senses and spirituality. He merges that interest with his passion for landscapes and boats. Matt’s latest body of work, The “Red Sun” series, showcases 7 tall vertical paintings; all acrylic on wood and all fantastical in nature.
The “Red Sun” series and others of Matt’s paintings will be featured as a Fall Event at Loren Doucette Studio at Seven Suns Gallery from Oct. 7 – Nov. 25th. The guest artist reception will be Friday, Oct. 14 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and is free and open to the public. Seven Suns Gallery is located at 48 Bearskin Neck in Rockport, Ma. and is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.
