A couple of times each month I order an Acai Bowl from SoBol in Beverly online, prepay, then run over and pick it up. They make it super easy and…..always…..super delicious. The messaging inside usually makes me smile as well….like this one for instance.

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! This is the first in a limited series of posts I plan between now and Valentine’s Day (Feb 14 by the way) to share some ideas to celebrate the day. This first one came from a Gloucester Elks Facebook post as you see here. Senior Care Inc is offering you an opportunity to Show the Love by donating a meal to a homebound senior in honor of Valentine’s Day. They cannot hold their annual fundraiser this year, but the need for funds is not diminished so this is a great opportunity to help fellow residents feel the love.
Here’s the link for the Senior Care Inc Valentine’s Day Meal on Wheel Un-Fundraiser: https://seniorcareinc.org/2021unbreakfast/ Easy to do online especially if you enjoyed the breakfast fundraiser in years past.

The City of Gloucester is committed to keeping the public fully apprised of the vaccination process, and will provide clearly and timely updates regarding vaccination distribution in the area over the coming weeks and months. This information will be shared over the City’s website, social media and by robocall.
Learn where you will fit into the COVID-19 vaccine distribution timeline.
The Baker-Polito Administration and the Department of Public Health developed a vaccine distribution timeline after extensive consultation with the Massachusetts Vaccine Advisory Group. The timeline reflects several priorities: protecting our most vulnerable, maintaining health care system capacity, and addressing inequities in health care access and COVID-19 burden.

Membersof the public are asked to not contact the City at this time with questions regarding vaccination distribution, access and timelines. Inquiries of this nature are limiting City resources at a time when they are needed most. Those with vaccine distribution timeline questions can contact the Massachusetts Department of Public Health via the link below.

The City has received an outpouring of messages from those who would like to volunteer to support vaccination efforts. Volunteers with and without medical experience are needed to support different aspects of their work, and will supplement existing emergency and public health resources.
Sign-up to volunteer to support a future Cape Ann COVID-19 vaccination clinic
The first question in the registration form will ask volunteers to select an organization. Those looking to support efforts on Cape Ann should select the orange plus sign next to the link to view a map of organizations by region. Once you have clicked on the orange plus sign, you will have the option to select MRC (Medical Reserve Corps). To volunteer to support vaccination efforts in Gloucester and Cape Ann, select this option by clicking on the black plus sign to the left, and then select “Region 3 — Northeastern MA” by selecting the black plus sign to the left, and lastly select “North Shore — Cape Ann Emergency Preparedness Coalition MRC.” From here, fill out the rest of the form with your information.

Our Valentine card fundraiser at Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative at 121 Main Street, Gloucester began Friday, January 15th. The event is called “Don’t Lose Heart.” We are excited to offer handmade cards where 100% of the proceeds go to The Open Door to provide food to residents of Cape Ann. A few of our artists have designed a card which also includes a small gift such as a carved heart in a beach stone by Ann Schlecht, a ceramic heart pin made by Peter Black, a matted card photograph by Jim Sousa ready for framing or a semi precious gemstone heart by Kathy Bucholska.
Other members have created unique Valentine cards with special designs and messages that you won’t find anywhere else. Our current hours are Friday and Sunday 12 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 6. Stop by and purchase a card for a special person while supporting your local community.

Coooold day on Cape Ann yesterday. While I realize they’re built for it, I still felt bad for the ducks floating on Mill River.

I recently saw that the Boston Globe in undertaking an initiative they are calling “Fresh Start” which is intended to allow people named in stories to “appeal their presence in older stories published on our websites.” The Boston Globe states that they are “looking inward at our own practices that have disproportionately affected communities of color.”
I find this to be very interesting and worth consideration for those affected. As many of you know, I consider myself a family historian and therefore rely heavily on newspapers to further that research. The idea that some stories might get a re-work initially caused me to think to myself “Hey, wait a minute….”. But, as I considered the stories of a number of friends and acquaintances whose lives were severely and adversely affected by news coverage, I sat back and thought about it again. When the news is sensationalistic, the stories often appear front and center especially in local newspapers. When people are found to be innocent or wrongly accused, that news often does not appear as prominently. The initial story often changes as it develops but isn’t always covered in the same manner.
So I applaud the efforts of the Boston Globe and others undertaking similar efforts to right past wrongs. If you feel you might qualify here’s a link for you to check out. If you do not live in the Boston Globe coverage area, a newspaper or media outlet in your area might be ‘revisiting the past for a better future.” I hear it’s all the rage…….
