Hungry Osprey Chicks as Seen on Osprey Cam

In case you missed feeding time on the Essex Greenbelt Osprey Cam, here’s a couple of screenshots. One parent brought food to the nest and you can see 3 little baby bobbing heads in there if you look carefully. If it were up to me, I might call them Larry, Darryl and Darryl. Check it out at http://www.ecga.org.

Osprey Chicks Have Hatched!

All three osprey chicks have very recently hatched in the nest behind LobstaLand! The osprey parents, known as Annie and Squam are tending to their newly hatched chicks and can be followed on the Essex Greenbelt Osprey Cam linked here.

There is also an article in the Boston Globe describing a little of the nest’s history and fascination.

Take a look and welcome the new chicks to the world. Screenshot taken just a few minutes ago:

COVID 19 Testing Available June 17 and 18

covid-twitter-group-over-50-sites-01

Gov. Baker announced that 52 testing sites across Massachusetts will be available to those who have attended large gatherings in the last two weeks (think protests, among others). Testing will be available Wednesday and Thursday this week (June 17 and 18) FREE. You are strongly encouraged to get tested if you’ve been in a large gathering recently. Results will be provided to each participant and you will be encouraged to share those results with your doctor.

It is available to everyone and will be provided FREE of charge. You do not need to have symptoms. Although I do not see a Gloucester location, there are plenty nearby. List and further information from Mass.gov/covid-gettested. Some sites are appointment only, so check ahead.

If you’ve been wondering if you should be tested, this is your opportunity!

BEYOND THE PANDEMIC Birding in Our Backyard: Singing the praises of Cape Ann’s winged aerialists with John Nelson, Kim Smith and Martin Ray

CAPE ANN β€” You don’t have to go far to find respite from the pandemic.
Literary Cape Ann’s first virtual event β€” on the eve of this summer’s long-awaited equinox β€” celebrates Cape Ann’s wealth of birds. Authors and naturalists John Nelson, Martin Ray and Kim Smith have spent years documenting the lives of birds. We’ll look at their distinctive calls, their brilliant aesthetics, their charming idiosyncrasies and, of course, their habitats. We’ll also talk about ways all of us can more deeply experience Cape Ann’s birds using observation, cameras, sketchpads, journals and checklists. Wildlife biologist Eric Hutchins will moderate.
All are invited, free of charge, to join us for a lively Zoom presentation on Friday, June 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.Families are welcome to attend together. We’ll chat, look at and listen to birds, and take time for your questions.
Our distinguished panel of author–naturalists will discuss the joys of birdwatching on Cape Ann. John Nelson will explain birdwatching basics and share key points in his new book, β€œFlight Calls: Exploring Massachusetts through Birds.” Martin Ray will talk about his popular blog, β€œNotes from Halibut Point,” and share experiences blogging about birds in that magical place. Kim Smith will share her own adventures chronicling Cape Ann’s vibrant bird life including shorebirds like the piping plover, the snowy owl and the Baltimore Oriole. Literary Cape Ann is pleased to host this special event that offers something fun and meaningful for families to do close to home during this challenging time.
Visit Literary Cape Ann’sΒ Facebook pageΒ for the Zoom link pinned to the top of the page. Just click on the link around 6:25 p.m. on June 19 and someone from Literary Cape Ann will admit you to the event.Β Those interested may visit The Bookstore of Gloucester to purchase the panelists’ books, along with a curated selection of bird books.
