SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
Ā
Harold Rotenberg: An American Impressionist

On view through June 17, 2018

This exhibition explores the long and much acclaimed career of artist Harold Rotenberg (1905-2011). A native of Attleboro, Massachusetts, a prominent member of the Rockport and Cape Ann Art Colony, and a world-wide traveler, Rotenberg’s work displays a richness in color and vibrancy of brush stroke that evokes the work of the great Impressionists. Harold Rotenberg: An American Impressionist captures the artist’s passion for light and landscape and his love of painting out of doors where the experience was always, in the artist’s own words, spiritual. Very honored to have my photo on the cover of this new novel

Georges Bank is a nineteenth century tale of determination and survival.

Maggie O’Grady,Ā a bright but naĆÆve Irish immigrant,Ā is impregnated and discarded in a brothel by her first employer in the New World, a rich Boston merchant. Maggie struggles, and with the help of the women around her, raises her sonĀ and eventually finds love with a fisherman.

Georges Bank is set in Gloucester, Massachusetts, home to Kipling’s Captains Courageous and Junger’s Perfect Storm, in the days of sail during and after the Civil War. Thousands of Gloucester fishermen died at sea during that time — fighting in the trenches of war was safer than fishing on GeorgesĀ andĀ the other offshore fishing banks. Life was perilous for those left ashore as well, where the widowsĀ and their daughters, left with no legitimate means of support, were sometimes forced into lives of prostitution to survive.

The book climaxes with a wrongful death trial brought by the widows and children of two fishermen killed in a winter storm on a boat insured by the Boston merchant. Maggie’s son, by then a young lawyer, represents the widows. The trial presents a sobering look at theĀ American justice system,Ā its entanglement with the interests of the rich, and the harsh consequences of that inequity for the least powerful among us.

Georges Bank is a rip-roaring good story. The all-too-short lives of the fishermen are realistically portrayed, but so is the romance of a life lived at sea. The plight of the desperate women left behind is realistically shown as well. But there is kindness amidst the violence. By and large, they band together, sometimes in relationships that must be kept secret due to the norms of the time, and they persevere.Ā

Finally, this is the story of a woman who refuses to be a victim, who fightsĀ and strivesĀ and overcomes.

Biography

Bradley Bagshaw grew up in Gloucester and has lived with the sea since exploring Gloucester Harbor in a beat-up dory at age ten. Sailing instructor was his first job at sixteen, which was followed by work on the docks as a stevedore and a forklift driver. Then he was off to Exeter, Bowdoin, MIT, and Harvard Law School, and to a career as a lawyer suing fishing companies for mistreating their fishermen. Starting in 2007, Bradley and his wife sailed eleven thousand miles from Seattle to Tahiti and back on a thirty-nine-foot cutter. On that trip he conceived the idea for Georges Bank, his first novel.

Boston Cannons Lacrosse at Endicott

As part of their newly launched “Cannons in Your Community”Ā initiative, the Major League Lacrosse team is bringing fast-paced and action packed lacrosse to Boston area towns including Beverly’s Endicott College and Hingham.

The Cannons home field is at Harvard Stadium, but the team is happy to be bringing games to other communities as well.

The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that the club has created a new initiative to bring select regular season home games to two greater Boston communities in 2018. The Cannons will play one game at Hingham High School in Hingham, MA, and two games at Endicott College in Beverly, MA. The ā€œCannons In Your Communityā€ effort is focused on strengthening the team’s community outreach and increasing direct engagement with greater Boston area lacrosse fans.

ā€œWe’re extremely excited to bring Cannons lacrosse to the communities of the South Shore and North Shore, both are very passionate about the sport,ā€ said Cannons President Ian Frenette. ā€œWhile our game continues to grow at a significant pace, we need to continue to do our part to drive the continued growth and engagement with current and prospective lacrosse fans in their towns. This initiative is going to give fans an even closer look at Cannons action in an intimate environment and provide us the opportunity to reach new fans by bringing the game to their neighborhood.ā€

READ MORE ABOUT “CANNONS IN THE COMMUNITY” HERE

The boys and I attended yesterday’s game at Endicott College and had an amazing time.Ā  The energy and enthusiasm was palpable and fans were able to get super close to the action.Ā  The opportunity to see such a high level sporting event in such an intimate setting is one not to be missed.

After the game the players spent 30 minutes interactive with fans, posing for photos, and signing autographs.Ā  My boys talked endlessly about how friendly the players were and how cool it was to get to meet them.Ā  The team is spot on with their hopes that experiences like “Cannons in Your Community” will help introduce more fans to this great game.

This is such a phenomenal opportunity to attend a major league sports event.Ā  Ā Be sure to mark your calendars for June 23rd and don’t miss this chance to watch the Boston Cannons take on the New York Lizards back at Endicott College @ 6:00 pm
