MOSSE the band will be playing at the Harbor Loop Concert Series this Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m.

MOSSE band members Andrew Luman and Jerry Smith are Gloucester guys and the band is kinda famous thanks to GoodMorningGloucester (here was the world exclusive post on GMG about MOSSE’s debut.)

Thursday’s concert will be free, fun and kid-friendly. 

Attached to this email is a music clip of their sound and a Mosse CD poster, in case it’s helpful. 

Oh, and special bonus — the band will have their new CD available at Thursday night’s concert, too.

So There’s This Bridge… (Poll)

So there’s this bridge in Westwood MA where trucks just keep smashing into.  It happens so often that someone has set up a video camera and put together a highlight reel of trucks smashing into it.

You’ll see in the video that the trucks look like they’re gonna clear it but I’m not sure if the road suddenly has a bump but BAM, they all smash right into it tearing their box trucks to pieces.

Ultimately it’s the driver’s fault because there’s a big low clearance sign on the bridge itself and another tiny sign buried among about 5 other signs.

Do you think the town could do anything differently to alert the drivers Like attach a huge billboard photo of the previous truck wreck where it says LOW CLEARANCE so maybe it will sink in better or do you think that it won’t matter and they should just let these truck smash-ups continue to occur? Another alternative would be to install a hanging sign about 20 feet before the bridge that would be the height of the bridge so if the truck hit the sign it would make a loud noise and let the driver know that he won’t make it under and he better stop.

 Live Theatre Performances for Young Audience Members Age 3 and Older

Gloucester Stage continues Playtime Stories, a fun combination of children’s stories, live performances and children’s activities for ages 3 and older, on Saturday, August 29 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. The stories set for August 29 are from Dr. Seuss: the new Dr. Seuss story, Which Pet Should I Get? and the classic tale of The Lorax. Following the performance, young audience members are invited to join Youth Program Director Heidi Dallin, Gloucester Stage Education Apprentices: Avery Daniels, Jenna Worden and Amelia Dornbush and cast members from the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop program for activities and theatre games. On August 29 young audience members can learn about Stage Makeup and be made up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character from the stories, play theatre games and participate in a craft. Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theatre as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage as well as the opportunity to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each week Playtime Stories explores a different story ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. Poet Charles Giuliano at Annisquam Village Library August 27

The poet, Charles Giuliano, spent the summers of his youth in Annisquam.

On Thursday, August 27, at 7:30 PM he will return to his roots with a reception and reading from Shards of a Life at the Annisquam Village Library at 354 Leonard Street, rear.

The book of verse, which is available through Amazon, contains a number of poems related to growing up in Annisquam.

A second book Total Gonzo Poems which will be published this fall contains a chapter The Nugents of Rockport. On his mother’s side, Dr. Josephine Flynn, his Irish ancestors are an important part of Cape Ann History.

In 1875 Patrick and Mary Nugent, Irish immigrants, leased the 32 acre Beaver Dam Farm in Rockport from the Babson family. They raised 13 children of which three died tragically in 1913.

When Mary died in 1927 the farm was abandoned and later torched by local kids. All that survives is the stone kitchen from 1658. George Nugent bought land up the road on which is now located Nugent Farms a condominium complex. For a time George Nugent was the Boss Tweed of Gloucester politics.

There will also be a reading of selections of Nugent poems from the soon to be published book.

Now retired from teaching art history and running the gallery program for Suffolk University/ New England School of Art and Design Giuliano has an extensive career as a curator and critic. He also taught at Boston University, U. Mass Lowell and other colleges.

In 1970 he coined the word Gonzo which he was the first to publish in a July 3, review of Ten Years After at Harvard Stadium. At the time he was the rock critic for the daily Boston Herald Traveler. Giuliano is the only surviving original gonzo journalist. That legacy is the focus of his second book.

In addition to the Herald Traveler he was a columnist and editor of Art New England, contributor to Art News, the daily Patriot Ledger, Boston After Dark/ Phoenix and numerous publications.

Currently he lives in the Berkshires where he and his wife Astrid Hiemer publish and edit the on line digital magazine Berkshire Fine Arts.

Foggy Morning Music at Annisquam Lighthouse

Lighthouse Annisquam Gloucester ©Kim Smith 2015I had a wonderful adventure early his morning looping around Cape Ann and listening for the clearest fog horn sounds to record. My drive began at the Paint Factory to listen for the Ten Pound Island fog horn, then onto Eastern Point Lighthouse, Thacher Island Light, and Straitsmouth Island Light, before landing at the lighthouse at Annisquam. For my purposes the Annisquam Lighthouse was perfect and I loved the combined sounds of fog horn, birds awakening, waves lapping at the shore, and the clanging of buoy bells in the distance. A view from Hull

I spent my summers in Hull from the age of 3 to 21.  My Nonnie bought a cottage on the bayside with a view of the bay and also Paragon Park.  On August 19, 2015, went to visit a very close friend to visit her and her mom in Nantasket Beach.  We went to the Hull Point and took this photo of Boston.  The airport is only 7 miles away from this spot.

Rockport Legion Band – Free Concert Sunday 8/30/15

The Rockport Legion Band will perform our eight free  concert of our 82nd consecutive summer concert series at the Back Beach Bandstand, Beach St, Rockport, MA.

7:00, Sunday, August  30, 2015.

Popcorn is available.  Children are welcome.  Folding chairs and blankets are good.  In case of rain we will play inside the Legion Hall, next to the bandstand.

An Offer To All #GloucesterMA Election Candidates:

As you all know we don’t take political stances here or endorse candidates but what I’d like to offer is an invitation for any candidate that is running for office in Gloucester to submit a video explaining why they think they are best suited for the position they are running for.  The easiest way to do this would be to upload the video to YouTube.

The videos will be released once and placed on GMG at 7PM on the following night that they are received.  If more than one video is submitted to me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com then the first one that is submitted will be aired the following evening at 7PM and the next one submitted will be posted the following evening at 7PM.  There will be a link in each candidates post containing their video to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com which will have all previously submitted candidate’s videos.

Once they are submitted they will be added to https://2015gloucestermaelection.wordpress.com/ where all the videos will be available for viewing at any time on the same page.

In the title of the video it should list the candidate’s name- position they are running for and the words “GMG submission”.

If a candidate is not able to create a video to submit, then that speaks in my opinion to their qualifications to hold a position at this level of City Government.  If a candidate doesn’t read GMG or doesn’t get the word about this opportunity then that also speaks to their qualifications to hold a position at this level of City Government knowing the reach GMG has.

As always the GMG politics disclaimer- any post on these pages containing a candidate does not imply an endorsement for any candidate.  Comments on www.goodmorninggloucester.com for these video submissions on the blog will be turned off for these posts as well.

Hopefully this will serve to help candidates get their message across.

The 39th running of the Magnolia Road Race Is Next week!

Hi Joey,

We are pleased to announce the 39th running of the Magnolia Road Race to benefit the Magnolia Library Center next Saturday morning. This year, the great Joe Nadeau Band featuring Sandy Peek will perform right on Lexington Ave at the finish line.

The traditional kid’s 1K Fun Run will begin at 8:30AM followed by the USATF approved 5K Road Race at 9:15 AM.  The 1K Fun Run route will follow Norman Ave. to Shore Road to Hesperus Ave. to Lexington Ave. and finishing at the Library. The 5K road race map below outlines the route and streets that could be affected between 8:30AM and 10:15AM.  Senator Bruce Tarr will officially start the 5K while Cape Ann Savings Bank EVP and Team Gloucester running legend Bob Gillis will kick off the 1K.

Still Time to Register To Run: It is easy to register any of the following ways:

· On-line at www.magnolialibrary.org  ($25 or $20 for Magnolia Residents; $5 for the kids fun run)

· If you choose to register on race day, please be certain to show up well before race time. ($30 race day)

We hope you can run our classic 5K (3.1 miles) race or come out to cheer on the runners! Race day registration is in the Library. The starting line is at 1 Lexington and Norman in front of the Library Center.

All are welcome to join in the Library’s pancake breakfast and Gloucester Police touch a truck!  Kids get free pancakes and entry to the Library’s Bouncy House as part of their 1K entry fee.

BeautyBar New Logo Beautifies Neighborhood

Hi Joey! …Mr. Small Business Person of the Year! Congrats to you!
Here’s my small business story about my long awaited logo.
When I first launched BeautyBar—a hair cutting/styling business—4 years ago, needless to say, I was unsure of its’ future. Investing immediately in its identity with a logo and advertising seemed risky.
Over the past four years, Beauty Bar on Parker Street has made itself known and gained a foothold here in ‘Glosta’. But the shops lack of any real signage has been criticized by my clients as having ‘no presence’. I realized the time had come for this busy one-woman beauty shop operator, as well as fine artist (I paint and display my canvases at the shop as well) to finally get that logo done!
My graphic designer friend, Deb Queally called me to chat about the long, hard winter we had, and the topics of hair, art and logos came up. Old ideas for the Beauty Bar logo we had had four years earlier were dusted off and joined up with the new, and she’s come up with an outstanding representation of my business. FINALLY A LOGO!
So I thought I would contact you for the BIG REVEAL, as my sign/banner will be more of a piece of public art than just an ad cluttering the landscape. It will adorn the sloping roof I share with that chic late night bar, Pratty’s, aka the ‘Parker Street Palace’. Filming by K Films of a bar fight with Casey Affleck, recently took place there and I’m in the scene holding a fake beer (never thought I’d be in that act)! I also got to do the hair of a few of the locations crew!
The hood is shaping up here on the old State Fish Pier! I’m in good company with Tree Top Yoga, Three Lanterns Bait and Tackle Shop, Wholefoods Distributors, Essex County Landscape Associates and recently the new home of Yankee Fleet Tickets.
Okay…here it is…maybe I can I get a drum roll from David Doc Vincent?!
