Happy National Dog Day Everyone! Except Joey.

Only a dog owner can appreciate a dogs love. When you get home after a few hours away from them and they are about to explode at the door just for a hug don’t know the feeling. If you want to experience and feel the love and have the time “adopt don’t shop”.

Hopper’s Houses – A Guided Walking Tour

A tour in downtown Gloucester to view houses immortalized by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a guided walking tour of select Gloucester houses made famous by American realist painter Edward Hopper on Saturday, September 5  at 10:00 a.m. Tours last about 1 1/2 hours and are held rain or shine. Participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time. Cost is $10 for Cape Ann Museum members; $20 for nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Space is limited and reservations are required. Email info@capeannmuseum.org or call(978) 283-0455 x10 for more information or to reserve a space. This tour will be offered again on September 12 and 19.

American realist painter Edward Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions during the summer months between 1912 and 1928. His earliest visit was made in the company of fellow artist Leon Kroll. During his second visit to Cape Ann in 1923, Hopper courted the young artist Josephine Nivison. He also began working in watercolor, capturing the local landscape and architecture in loosely rendered, light filled paintings. In 1924, Hopper and Nivison who were newly married returned to Gloucester on an extended honeymoon and continued to explore the area by foot and streetcar. During his final two visits to the area, in 1926 and 1928, Hopper produced some of his finest paintings. This special walking tour will explore the neighborhood surrounding the Museum, which includes many of the Gloucester houses immortalized by Hopper’s paintings.

I Think Not

Summer is obviously the season of swimming, splashing, and laughing and to do so families flock to water parks.

So, I started thinking…where are the world’s biggest water slides?

And this is what I found out.

For the record, I actually felt nauseous just from watching this video of Numero Uno. Yikes. No thanks.

Do you care?

dog1

When it’s early in the morning and you are walking your dog do you really care what you are dressed like?

I definitely do not. I am the crazy lady walking her dogs around the block in Christmas PJ’s

(yes i realize its August I love them and wear them year round)

Do you go out of your way to get dressed and get in appropriate dog walking attire? OR

Do you just roll out of bed throw on a sweatshirt (maybe) and some flip flops and go?

Recap of August International Dory Races 2015.

Saturday, August 22, 2015, Lunenburg, NS
International Dory Races

It was a great day of racing this past weekend with good match ups in all divisions, that are gaining momentum each year.  US women’s team Amanda Palazzola and Lindsey Rogers in their 2nd year of dory racing competed in a close race to the very end losing out to arguably one of the best Canadian women’s teams of all time (Kath Moore & Gail Atkinson).  The Junior men’s category showed two teams with similar boat speed but the Canadian’s John Ernst & Jack Smith navigated a superior course to a win over Tyler Edmonds and Thomas Beaton.  I believe both of these teams will have 1 final year competing against one another in the Junior category.  The US mixed team’s 18 year old Lily Jean Sanfilippo broke an oar on the start in her very first race.  She was pretty rattled and had to row with unfamiliar gear, but made the US team and her partner Bill Edmonds proud with a valiant effort.  Canada’s newly paired mixed team Danette Eden/Willy Wells looked like they had rowed together for years, and  with superior course navigation and composure, they powered to a victory.  The Over 50 match-up pitted last year’s US contenders Alex Thomas/Donny Favaloro against Canadian living legend Walter Nickerson (with 5 decades of experience and too many wins to keep track of) & 8 year dory mate and equally successful Danny Moody.  There are not too many 50+ or younger who would like to see Walter and Danny line up beside them in a dory.  As expected, Walter & Danny piled up another win for the Canadians despite the heart felt efforts of the Americans.  And, in the final race of the day 3 time International Champs Glenn Harrington/Erik Dombrowski faced off with 5 time consecutive International Champs Joel George/Markus Schmidt.  After a close race to the turning flag, the Canadian team executed a perfect approach and turn gaining a lead and extending it back to the finish line.  Joel and Markus are excellent rowers with an unmatched work ethic in the dory, showing all the teams in the event the passion and dedication it takes to dominate dory racing.

A great day of racing in front of a good sized crowd after a very foggy start on picturesque Lunenburg Harbour was capped off by an afternoon/evening of camaraderie with US and Canadian rowers and friends rekindling long time friendships, swapping rowing stories and challenging each other with future competition to determine who has the world’s best dory rowers.  Don’t miss the 2016 June International Dory Races in Gloucester, MA.

Best wishes and a sincere thank you to CDRA and the Nova Star for making this event possible, pleasurable, and exciting for all participants and fans.  With all of your help, we have continued a 53 year tradition born out of schooner dory fishing heritage and national pride.

Team USA takes some time off from rowing to see the cliffs & caves at the famous Ovens Park.

Did you know that a resident of Middle Street, Gloucester, saved the town from a British attack by sea during the Revolution? Or that a leading feminist and religious free thinker lived halfway down Middle Street? Or, that the 1764 Saunders House that forms part of the Sawyer Free Library has undergone at least three radical architectural changes including a massive Victorian tower? Four centuries of Gloucester’s social, economic, and architectural history are packed into this one short street in the heart of downtown Gloucester. Join us for a docent-led tour of an ever-evolving neighborhood where you will see surviving evidence of the past and will learn about structures and people now gone.
