  1. These people are not doing her any favors. They are asking her to compromise her integrity by going back on her word. IF the shit hits the fan in the next two years they will turn on her and say she went back on her word. We all know she can run and win in the next election. Why not encourage her then? It’s two years, not forever. Why would you want to risk her integrity? I also think she’s doing a good job and has a wonderful team in place but I’m also her friend and don’t want her to risk her word, her integrity for people who can’t see that.

  2. In response to your comment Melissa, I am not doing anyone any favors you are correct in that statement but I also will not be told by a city council who I can or cannot vote for. I still have a right in this country to freedom of speach so that is what this petition is about. How the Mayor decides is up to her but you have already given your endorsement when you voted for her as interim and now we understand why..

  3. I’m not telling anyone who to vote for, I could care less who anyone votes for. I have not given any endorsement by voting for her, not sure what you mean by that. I was not picking on any one person here, it was very much a general statement. I gave her my vote because she promised me she wouldn’t run in the next election, had I known she may do otherwise I would have made a different vote.

  4. I agree with Melissa. Sefatia took the job with the understanding that she would not run for the mayoral position in the upcoming election and shouldn’t go back on her word. Two years will be here before we know it and she can run then.

  5. There is no one that knows the needs of the people of Gloucester or, Cape Ann for that matter, than Sefatia.

We have all made emphatic statements in our lives only to find early on or down the road that we spoke to soon!
Being human is a interesting existence. We learn and we adapt, we change our minds as to what road we are going to take at the crossroads. If Sefatia takes stock in reasoning for her past comments and finds she indeed feels that to run is the best thing for the people of Gloucester, we should encourage and rejoice in the fact that a person of her integrity and with the knowledge of the city as she, would grace us with her loving hands!

  6. Can someone with knowledge of politics explain why it was so important that the person that agreed to take over as mayor had to promise not to run later on?

  7. The Interim Mayor position was conditional upon it being for one year only, and eligibility to run for the full-time position in 2015 election was NOT an option. The reasoning behind this was to not give an unfair advantage to that person over other Mayoral candidates. Since she agreed to this, she should abide by it. Others interested in the position, but who had already declared their intentions to run for Mayor in 2015, believed such condition made them ineligible to apply. Sefatia is a well-known and popular figure in the city, and some believe she is doing a good job. However, that’s irrelevant. She gave her word to the city of Gloucester and all of it’s citizens, and to “change her mind” is a slap in the face to all.
