eiderling2

Since she knows much more about birds than I do, I decided to take Jodi from Cape Ann Wildlife’s recommendation to find an eider raft of sitters and young about the same age as the orphan duckling to release him to, in the hopes they would accept and take him in.  I walked all around Rocky Neck with him until I saw a crèche of 4 sitter aunties and a bunch of ducklings near a dock.  I went to the end of the dock and held up the baby who cheeped loudly and the eiders looked up at him while eyeing me suspiciously.  I asked them to please take him and set the duckling into the water.  He started to paddle but then immediately keeled over on his side and died.  I fear the 52 or so degree water was just to much of a shock for his little body which had become accustomed to being in a warm environment.  As I walked away, I looked back and the eiders were heading in his direction, although he was rapidly being pulled away by the current and there was nothing they could do for him.  It was very sad and I feel awful, although I and everyone who got to meet and know him was enriched by the experience.

    1. I think that maybe there was something wrong with him, for him to be where he was in the first place, so removed from water and his peeps, and the fact that he always wanted to be snuggled and kept warm. Maybe his clan cast him aside because he wasn’t right. Otherwise he seemed so healthy and happy, but for a normal eider, a little cold water shouldn’t have been a problem at all. It was very shocking and heartbreaking to see, because I had become attached to him and vice versa, I think.

      1. So sad E.J. You did your best. Three days under your care was a slice of heaven and I think you are right that maybe he wasn’t in the best of health after all.

      1. It was sort of a weird one this way too but nothing like Ma. But what was truly the character show of all taking care of each other and the updates on GMG and teamwork was amazing very blessed to have! Like the native tradition “My umbilical cord is buried where I was born. It’s like a magnet that knows where I am and how to bring me home.” Lorenzo Shaw, Spirit Keeper and wisdom for sure! Sorry I did not name the book. Dave:-) & Kim:-)

“The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo.”

The Girl who Sang to the Buffalo is a book that defies categorization. It will appeal to lovers of history, mysteries, good novels, and the magic of this American land.

That it did 🙂 Dave walk with the wind and sun on shoulders always!

  2. EJ sorry you had to experience this. At least you provided the little guy knew some comfort and warmth while he was alive.
