For Donna, David and All Other GMG Bird Lovers

This is raw video footage taken at a spot I walk to each morning here at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.  It has become my Niles Pond South.  I had to share this amazing explosion of birds that arrived and remained at this spot for about two weeks while they gobbled up all the fish in the place and then moved on.  In the mix of birds were numerous great blue herons, tri-colored herons, little blue herons, green herons, limpkins, snowy egrets, cattle egrets, great egrets, roseate spoonbills, black backed stilts, anhinga, osprey, sandhill cranes, storks, white and glossy ibis, gallinules, grebes and even an alligator and some otters.

Now that they are all well fed, some are probably heading Gloucester way, so be on the lookout for them.  I won’t be far behind them.

      1. So I have heard, but I haven’t tried it. In fairness and consideration to my pasty white Cape Ann buds, I am holding off returning until June 1, to give people a fair chance to get a little color going before my deep Florida tanned self reappears. Actually mom gets chilled when the temperature dips below 78, so I’m holding off until there is a good chance for those temps in Gloucester.

    1. I think I just got really lucky finding this spot when I did. It is part of the wildlife preserve on the edge of PGA National, next to the Island community on Ryder Cup Blvd. It is right along the Blvd. (you can hear cars rushing by in the background of the video) but partially obscured by a berm that runs along its edge. I walked there many times and only saw a few birds, and then the flocks came in around April 10th but were gone again by this past weekend. I go out to Grassy Waters Nature Preserve, which is much more remote than this spot, and don’t see anything like this.

    1. Yes, for a bird lover, it was such a treat to see so many different birds in one place all hanging out together. The really amazing thing is how unafraid of humans they are. They seem to know they are protected and no one will do them any harm.

    1. Thanks Dave – God really has blessed mom and me this winter – she is almost completely healed from her fall and surgery, and she is much happier being warm than surrounded by cold, ice and snow (me too!)
