Red in the Snow
Blizzard Valentine’s Dinner

As the blizzard started, we walked over to the Emerson Inn for a special dinner (it’s always special there). I had the pan seared scallops with lentils and wine sauce. It was delicious, but because of what chemo has done to my taste buds, I ate sparingly. The leftovers will make great omelettes at home. It was nice to dress up. The place is not as formal as my outfit indicates.
Janet, my Valentine: She had the Rack of Lamb, rubbed with brown sugar and dijon mustard, served with a Port Wine reduction. She cleaned the plate with a simile on her face. Leftovers: 4 bare lamb bones.

From The Site-
18 Haven was the address of the home and studios of Ken and Elizabeth Vincent. Originally bought as a summer home in 1950’s from realtor Ray Kierman they took permanent residency there years later.
“Why do you want to go anyplace else when you’re already HERE!” – Kenneth Vincent
Elizabeth and Ken met in Ogunquit, ME sometime in the early 1920’s. Elizabeth’s parents regularly spent their summers in Ogunquit and Ken’s parents sent him there to paint and live in a fishing shack.
Elizabeth aspired to be a writer but also enjoyed painting, gardening, and cooking. She loved the wild blueberry and bayberry bushes around the yard of 18 Haven Avenue. She often did paintings from slides or photos that she had taken during their travels to Europe, or around New England. She loved reading cookbooks, art books, and both Sunday edition New York Times and Boston Globe.
Kenneth Vincent
Ken started his career in New York, doing work with his brother in-law on the Perry Como show. He later went to Newell-Emmett/Cunningham & Walsh as a “bull pen” artist and to Campbell-Ewald, where he became Creative Director. Campbell-Ewald offered Ken a position as Vice President, which would have meant moving the family to Detroit. He refused, moved the family to Rockport, and opened Kenneth Vincent Advertising.
Kenneth Vincent Advertising worked on many projects with local businesses on Cape Ann including: Gloucester Paint, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Bomco, and The Building Center.
Ken and Elizabeth had five children together.
In August of 2012 their son Peter Vincent passed away. Boxes and boxes of negatives, slides, and films were found and the estate asked me to look after them. The first goal for me was to make sure everything was safe. Then, over time, I want to put something together for the family; hopefully, the long-term goal would be to create a book. Though as I looked at many of the images, there seemed to be a need to share some of these images and stories immediately with family and the larger community of Cape Ann, historic designer, and local families. This is how www.18haven.com came to be.
Ahhh…Winter in Massachusetts
A friend of mine found this somewhere….and I stole it from him. While I can’t take credit, it made me chuckle. Allow me to say, however, that despite all of this white crap, I do truly still love living in Massachusetts. It seems terribly fitting for our current state of affairs….or snoffairs…as it would seem.
Dear Diary…
August 15 – Moved to our new home in Boston, Massachusetts. It’s so beautiful here. The lake to the north looks so majestic. I can hardly wait to see it snow covered. I’m going to love it here!
October 14 – Massachusetts is definitely the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves have all turned colors. There are beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. Went for a ride through the park and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly, they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise, I LOVE IT HERE!!
November 10 – Deer season will start soon. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous animal. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here. Those red, orange, and yellow leaves have covered my yard. Looks like a magnificent multi-colored carpet. HOW BEAUTIFUL. Raking and cleaning up the yard will be an opportunity for invigorating exercise in the cool crisp air.
November 15 – Ah, more leaves and more exercise.
November 18 – Jesus, still more leaves. Guess it’s best to wait until they’ve all fallen before I rake again.
November 25 – Finally, all of the trees lost their leaves and with today’s final raking it’s over for this season. Chiropractor suggested I use a lawn maintenance service next year. Only four blisters became infected. Should probably remember to use gloves.
November 30 – What the f…? Where did all of those leaves come from? Had a little wind last night and the lawn is covered again. Oh well, they’ll just have to wait until spring.
December 12 – It snowed last night, FINALLY. Woke up to find everything blanketed in white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. Had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by and we had to shovel the end of the driveway again.
What a beautiful place. Massachusetts!
December 14 – More snow last night, I love it. The snow plow did his trick to the driveway again. Love it here.
December 19 – More snow again last night. Can’t get out of the driveway. Can’t to get to work. I’m exhausted from shoveling. F…ing snowplow.
December 22 – More of that white shit fell again last night. As if dealing with the leaves weren’t bad enough, now I’ve got blisters all over my hands from shoveling. Must remember to wear gloves. I think the snowplow hides around the corner and waits until I’m finished shoveling the driveway. Idiot.
December 25 – Merry F…ing Christmas. More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands on that son-of-a-bitch who drives the snowplow, I swear I’ll kill the bastard. Don’t know why they don’t use more salt on the roads to melt the f…ing ice.
December 27 – More white shit last night. Have been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that plow goes through every time. F…ing gloves got wet and then froze on my hands.
Doctor said it was just a mild case of frost bite, disfiguration is probably only temporary. Can’t go anywhere, car is stuck in a mountain of white shit. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the shit tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is? A LOT.
December 28 – The f…ing weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of that white shit last night. At this rate it won’t melt ’till summer.
The plow got stuck up the road and the bastard came to the door and asked to borrow a shovel. I told him I’d already broken six of them shoveling all the shit he pushed into the driveway and then I broke my last one on his f…ing head.
January 4 – Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on the way back I hit a damned deer that ran in front of my car. Did about $3000 damage. F…ing beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters had killed them all last November.
May 3 – Took the car to the garage in town. Go figure, it’s rusting out from all the f…ing salt they finally put all over the roads.
May 10 – Dumped the car. Sold the townhouse. Moved to Florida. I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that forsaken state of Massachusetts!

Last word from the most important voice in modern journalism

You may have heard that New York Times columnist and best-selling author, David Carr, died on Thursday (see story here). His New York Times column The Media Equation was a must read for everyone involved in media (all FOB’s included) and I can honestly say it was one of the only reasons I looked forward Mondays.
Today, the NY Times published an excellent story about David Carr, full of enough wonderful and witty quotes that it has the feeling of being co-written by him.
The story focuses on his teaching at B.U. and even links to the syllabus, which the article says is “… perhaps David’s most succinct prescription for how to thrive in the digital age.”
I highly recommend this article (read it here) especially if you’re snow-bound and looking for something fascinating to entertain you.
Kids Eat Free…and the Beer is Good Too
I love when restaurants offer great deals like this….especially during a school vacation week!
Cape Ann Brewing Company wrote this on their Facebook page today:
Happy Presidents Day! Remember Monday through Thursday kids eat free 11 – 4 (1 Kid per adult!). Bring the little guys in and we can lavish them with stories of walking 5 miles to school, up hill, in cardboard shoes and no World Wide Web.
I, for one, plan on taking advantage of this awesome deal at least once this week!

NEED SHOVELERS!!!Attention Snow Shovelers Looking For Work & People In Need Of Shovelers
Update 3:31PM Jack & Colby Kelly ages 11 and 13 Restore My Faith In The Youth Of America!
Jack and Colby came by right at the time they said they would and have been shoveling away!
If anyone else has been helped by the service provided, please leave a comment below.
UPDATE 11:48AM For Those Who Have Responded, Let me know if you haven’t been contacted, more shovelers are now becoming available. I’ll send out more contacts if you haven’t been contacted.
So far so good!
UPDATE 5:41AM: So far we’ve had a ton of people respond that they need shoveling and only two Gloucester folks and no Rockport or Magnolia people looking to shovel.
I’m thinking there’s plenty of money to be made, a couple of young teens could probably make enough to buy an XBOX. C’mon youth of Gloucester, show me you’re willing to work. Fill in the form, there’s plenty of folks that would gladly fork over some dough.
I’m gonna try something here. Not sure if it’s going to work out but I’m going to give it a shot.
Here’s the idea-
With the impending snow storm there’s got to be a lot of folks at the end of their rope as far as shoveling goes.
Me being one of them.
But I imagine there’s lots of teens that will be out of school and able to shovel. When I was a kid, that’s what kids did. We shoveled and were rewarded with money.
My buddies and I would roam the neighborhood looking for folks that wanted to be shoveled out.
I’m not hiring kids and not going to negotiate prices but I’ll leave a form here for people interested in shoveling and for folks interested in getting people to them to shovel out their joint.
Then I’ll relay the contact information based on neighborhoods to the shovelers, they can contact the people that want to be shoveled, y’all can talk and potentially work something out.
I don’t know if this is a great idea or not but I know people are desperate and desperate times call for people trying to connect the dots. Right now there doesn’t seem to be much dot connecting. Hopefully teens or people looking for some extra pocket money can get out of the house and help some elders who could use it.
If Interested Fill Out This Form and Select Shoveler Or Need To Be Shoveled –
Your message has been sent
Again, I am not taking responsibility for the job anyone does or doesn’t do, I’m not taking responsibility for back injuries or if your kid gets run over. I’m merely trying to help people help people. I have nothing to gain from this.
