Peaceful and Protected ~ Brace Cove Makes for the Perfect Seal Hang Out!

Brace Cove Seals b-w ©Kim Smith 2014I’ve never seen so many conglomerating all at once at Brace Cove; at one point I counted over twenty lounging on the rocks and swimming in the water. The seals are fun and interesting to observe as they often play a game that seems very much like the children’s game King of the Mountain. Click to view larger.Brace Cove Seals 2 ©Kim Smith 2014

7 Central presents ~ The Dejas Saturday November 8, 2014 9-12 midnight

the dejas 7 central

I wanted to give you a heads-up about a great musical act performing at 7 Central this Saturday night from 9 to midnight.

The Dejas – a Salem-based duo – co-headlined the Blue Ocean Music Hall in Salisbury just a few weeks ago, have performed at Shalin Liu, House of Blues Boston and over the summer were featured in the 92.5 River Music Hall. They are regularly played on WUMB and 92.5 The River. You can check out a video below. This will be a great night of music – some exceptional originals and carefully curated covers.

I hope you’ll drop in and support this duo and give them a nice Manch-Vegas-by-the-Sea welcome. I’m very excited to have them come play. I have been speaking to them about doing so – literally for 2 and a half years – and this is the first time we have pulled it together.

Have a great weekend.
Chris

Eight Year Old Boy Kick-Starts An Extraordinary Educational Series

Nubar Alexanian submits-

Captain Tom Ellis of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon and Nubar Alexanian of Walker Creek Media are working together to bring to fruition an amazing young boy’s vision: a science educational series created by and starring a kid. The series, “Science All Around Us,” will be produced right here in Gloucester, and so far it looks beautiful.  Take a look at their Kickstarter campaign.
This new friend of Captain Tom believes that science doesn’t only need to be taught by adults. Kids can (and should) teach other kids too! Right now, this amazing project needs your help. They’ve got the talent, the passion, the powerful idea and all they need are the resources to make it happen.  Even if you can’t donate, check out Collin’s answer to his father’s question about why we should care about science by clicking on the questions below. It will convince you this is a project that matters.

Congratulations to  my son BJ Mohan, Daniel Powers, Eric Weist, James Turner, and Seth Murray, for their official induction into the St. John’s Prep Brother Benjamin Chapter Of The National Honor Society, last evening. BJ, Daniel, James, and Seth are all current members of the St. John’s Prep class of 2016, who have been recognized for their hard work in and out of the class room. To qualify as a member of this elite student body at St. John’s Preparatory School located in Danvers Ma. students must first qualify academically, and except an invitation to submit an application. Each student’s application is  reviewed by a board of faculty, staff, and current NHS students, under the leadership of Br. Robert Flaherty, CFX.

Highlighted below is the detailed criteria listed and taken from the St. John’s Prep website, that each student must meet and maintain for acceptance into the St. John’s Prep Brother Benjamin Chapter Of The National Honor Society.

“The Brother Benjamin Chapter of the National Honor Society is named in honor of Brother Benjamin, CFX, the school’s first headmaster, who served from 1907 until 1917.

The National Honor Society creates an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulates a desire to render service, promotes worthy leadership, and encourages the development of character in students of St John’s Preparatory School.

Membership is open to members of the sophomore, junior and senior classes. To qualify, students must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, character and a commitment to community service. Specifically, students must earn a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, contribute at least 30 hours of community service in the prior year and demonstrate leadership and involvement in the life of the school. If you have questions about the National Honor Society, please email Br. Robert Flaherty, CFX.”
