We’re calling in a hazmat crew this week to clean up the mess that’s gonna be created out of the arrival of that famous Tootin’ Torquemada of the Tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. This guy really knows how to do it. He sings, he chortles, he squeaks out the most amazing renditions of vintage R&B with his own battery of weapons of mass deconstruction. You’ll see. This coming on the heels of the most amazing night last week when the Three Stooges of the Blues poked my eyes out . What a night!

andy clark
AC will be yanking in the amazing Mr. Mike DiBari to play gootar and perhaps sing a few, too. My personal favorite woodchopper, Mr. Forrest Padgett, will be flailing away on the skins. And I, Salmon DaveSag, will be helping out as much as I can. So, don’t be a cube, rube, go ape! Seeya there!

1968: Howard Marston, Jr. (a.k.a. “Chicklet”) seated with his parents in
resistance to the SSS and the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam.
When I first met Chick Marston, I was a young teenager.
My friends had told me I had to “see this guy play guitar”.
A gang of us rode in Jon Pope’s van to his house in Rockport.
Pope wanted to sell him a gorgeous metal-flake blue Fender
Stratocaster. Only thing was, Chick had never touched an
electric guitar in his entire life! I watched while he fumbled
all over the thing and wondered what all the hoopla was about.
But it wasn’t long after that I got to hear him play his nineteen
thirty-something Martin and simply sat in awe. And, soon after
that, he was making national news, courageously refusing
induction into the Army and its gross, immoral war – his beloved
and highly intelligent father and mother by his side all the way.
He was my hero. Our hero. I wonder how many local residents
know about this little chunk of American History. You want an
interesting read? Check the link below this paragraph. But
meanwhile, it is my honor to have “Chicklet” Marston as musical
guest at the Rhumb Line this Wednesday night. We have a total
blast every single time we play together. I see no reason for that
to change now… not after all these years. ~ Fly

Who Needs Ice?

Cape Ann Youth Hockey, along with some folks named the Boston Bruins, pulled off a fantastic event yesterday afternoon….all in the name of the Open Door Food Pantry.  The Boston Bruins Street Brigade Clinic gave about 50 kids the opportunity to participate in some street hockey games, meet Blades (the Bruins mascot), and receive gifts from the Boston Bruins.  In return, Cape Ann Youth Hockey and the Bruins simply asked that participants make a donation to the incredibly worthy Open Door Food Pantry.  A win-win!

Another example of great things happening on any given day within our community!

A huge thanks to all of those involved!  It is never too late to make a donation! Please consider.

Pet of the Week- Butters

butters2

Yep…Butters is my name. I’m guessing the folks who gave me this name did so because when I meet you, I am capable of pouring on the charm to make you melt like butter in my paw. I am a handsome fellow with a soft purr. I love sunny spots for napping and fish tanks for gazing. I am more on the mellow side. I guess the best way to put it is that I was born to lounge on the cough…not running on the track! I love attention and I promise, I am a great listener. You could tell me all about your day or the dream you had last night and I promise I’ll soak up every word!

butters1

I am eager to settle down and start my new life with you so please don’t delay and come see me soon! I’m at Cape Ann Animal Aid’s Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter at 4 Paws Lane in Gloucester. Visit www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information about me and my kitty friends.

Israel Horovitz’s Red Carpet Special on Cape Ann TV Tonight!

Lisa Smith submits ~

Cape Ann TV is airing  “Israel Horovitz’s ‘My Old Lady’ Red Carpet Special” tonight on Channel 12 at 9 pm. Join the talented and  glamorous Heidi Dallin as she interviews Cape Ann’s A-List who attended last weeks’s advanced screening of “My Old Lady” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The movie is directed by Gloucester Stage Company founder Israel Horovitz  and stars Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith. The screening was a benefit for the Gloucester Stage Company.

It is one big party on the red carpet, as Heidi talks to a sea of one name personalities from Cape Ann: Carolyn, Bruce, Ann-Margaret, and Sinikka, just to name a few. She also talks to Gail McCarthy and Desi Smith of the Gloucester Daily Times and Mark Shanahan from the Boston Globe’s ‘Names & Faces’.  The program ends with Israel’s introduction to the movie. He talks about what it is like to make a film in Paris, and working with Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline.

Ed Note ~ My Old Lady is playing at the Cape Ann Community Cinema through September 24th. For ticket information click here.

These young women are worth going over the bridge for

GraceKelly_HotWhen I say Jazz, people often reply, “Oh, I don’t like jazz.”  But they like Henri Smith and Cape Ann Big Band and Henley Douglas, Jr. and Henry Allen and Karen Ristuben and Mark Earley and Miranda Russell and Linda Amero and The Docksiders — all jazz.  If you like any or all of these people OR you like blues, funk, or a new genre called “atmospheric pop”, you’ll LOVE 22-year-old Grace Kelly, who’s been performing since she was 8.  Another young rising star Yoko Miwa opens the show. You can get Tickets here.

On Thursday (Sept 25), you can see these two rising stars at Beverly’s fully restored, historic Larcom people are calling Grace Kelly a “jazz phenom.”  Check out her latest video and see what top stars say about her:

“I’ve heard the future of jazz and it is Grace Kelly.” – David Was, NPR’s Day to Day

“Grace Kelly writes great songs, sings beautifully, is a world class saxophonist, and is going to be a big big star” – Huey Lewis

“Grace Kelly plays with intelligence, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to adapt. That is the hallmark of a first-class jazz musician.” – Wynton Marsalis
