Hey GMG!
New to the area in the last year and I just discovered your site. Good stuff! I’m lovin’ gettin to know Cape Ann and your site is going to be a big help.
My pals and I are beginning an odyssey of sorts to have a drink at every bar on Cape Ann, starting with the bars, taverns and pubs of Gloucester. The only rule is that the establishment must have an actual bar to sit at. I have a list going based on visual and web reconnaissance and I was wondering if you could help me out with any places I am missing. After Gloucester, we’ll do ever bar in Essex, Manchester, Ipswich, Hamilton/Wenham and Beverly. Maybe after that we’ll start over in Gloucester!
The List, in no particular order:
1. Latitude 43. 25 Rogers St
2. Topside Grill. 50 Rogers St
3. Dog Bar. 65 Main St
4. Crows Nest. 334 Main St
5. Stones Bar. 242 Main St
6. The Rhumb Line. 40 Railroad Ave
7. Cape Ann Brewing Co. 11 Rogers St
8. Azorean. 133 Washington St
9. Franklin Cape Ann. 118 Main St
10. Halibut Point. 289 Main St
11. JD & Meyers. 24 Lexington Ave
12. St Peter’s Town Landing. 46 Commercial St
13. Smokin’ Jim’s Bar-B-Q. 121 E Main St
14. Mile Marker One. 75 Essex Ave
15. The Rudder at Rocky Neck. 73 Rocky Neck Avenue
16. Madfish Grille. 77 Rocky Neck Avenue.
17. Oceans Edge Restaurant. 171 Atlantic Road. Closes at 9pm.
18. Espresso Italian Grille & Pub. 116 East Main St.
19. Seaport Grille. 6 Rowe Square Gloucester, MA
20. Alchemy Café and Bistro. 3 Duncan Street
21. Passports Restaurant. 110 Main Street.
22. Jalapeno’s. 86 Main St.
23. Pilot House BBQ Restaurant. 3 Porter Street
24. Minglewood Tavern. 25 Rogers St
25. Horizon Chinese Rest. 4 Rogers St.
26. Giuseppe’s. 2 Main St.
27. House of Mitch.
Catch 22 or whatever it is called now
Any suggestions you have will be appreciated and appropriately acknowledged on our forthcoming blog.
Thanks!

Smokin’ Jim’s Bar-B-Q. 121 E Main St is not there any longer and you forgot about Casle Manor Inn.

Have fun! Just don’t do all 27 in one night. Or even more than one per night.

Good luck Chris, and I hope you have a limo to dump you all off at home. I’ve tried walking the dive trail with my old friend Ellen Sutherland, and we never got too far. Randy O’Neill used to rent a small limo bus for a bar hop Thanksgiving weekends for his friends who came home for the holiday weekend, and it was great, and a challenge. I’m too old (and maybe wise) to be a participant, but I’d love to tag along and cover with photos and a story for GMG. Info: You omitted one of our two dives: Pratty’s. Rudder may be closed. Madfish is closed. Smokin’ Jim’s gone. There’s no bar at St. Peter’s, except for the Cape Ann Brewing Company, which is on your list. Omitted was Ohana on Main Street and the Gloucester House on Rogers. Passports will be closed from 10/15 to mid November (it’s a big secret: HBO movie set filming). “Jeeze, Prowler needs a jump!” So it sounds like I could be your tour guide, but I can’t drive all your pals home. Credentials: Professional drinker (phrase originally coined by Wendy Demuth) for 33 years in this city, two time judge of the GMG Bloody Mary Contest, and now living the good life in Pigeon Cove, Rockport. If it ain’t fun, it ain’t worth doing. info@BodinHistoricPhoto.com

What do you mean there’s no bar at St Peters?

St. Peter’s Club? I thought that wasn’t open to the public, except at Fiesta. But I just thought of the place on the corner, in Gattineri’s building, Cafe Dolce on Main Street.

That’s a lot of bars, and a worthy goal. Good luck to you, sir, and good luck to your liver.

Not sure when you’re planning on this little adventure, but, as others have mentioned, keep in mind that many places are seasonal. However, if you’re looking for a comprehensive list no matter what time of year, be sure to add Captain Carlos and The Studio (which I believe will be open for the next couple of weekends). The Ocean View Resort has a bar near their pool table/fire place. Also, I picked up sushi at Midori the other day and I think they have a small bar inside too. Not sure if that counts, but if they serve drinks and have a stool, it should 🙂 God Speed.

But, if you hit one place each night for a toddy, this would take about a month. Take some time to enjoy the ambiance!

I think Dragon Light has a bar and the I believe the Studio on Rocky Neck will be open next weekend. Also, I would be happy to have you over to the Elks if you haven’t been. It’s a great club and the view isn’t bad. Let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions! Apparently Google maps doesn’t know everything yet!
We are definitely not going to try to do this all in one night. We were thinking of one or two places every week. So it will take about six months.

In the old military days late 70’s South Korea they used to do these off installation when you first got here Green Bean – when you got ready to rotate out it was a brown bean. They also had what they called a (Thunder Run). Good for the younger guys and everyone was on foot as the bars were within a mile of each other. These went out in the 80’s sometime offically along with (Happy Hour) renamed and refocused. :-O
