Origami for kids at Art Haven and Theatre Camp for Kids at the YMCA

This Thursday (3:30-5PM) is the last origami class for kids this month at Art Haven!  The content and level of difficulty of the class is entirely flexible according to the needs and interests of those who sign up.

So, for example, if your child (or a child you know) has an origami book and has stopped using it because he/she is stuck on a difficult model or discouraged, register them for the class and bring them with the book in question! I will help them through whatever difficulty they may be facing, and we can fold some model(s) from the book with the other students.

The possibilities are endless! Contact Art Haven for details on pricing and registration, and if you do register and have a specific interest or need, let me know ahead of time so I can prepare if necessary (you can comment on this post).  Here’s a photo from a previous class, showing me with budding origami artist Leon Calvo:

We folded a boat, a dragon, a lotus flower, and a Brontosaurus (aka Apatosaurus). Leon’s father David Calvo is a wood carver who does beautiful work and teaches classes as well.

It’s not too late to sign kids up for Theatre Camp at the YMCA! I’ve heard great things about this program. “Murder on Rocky Neck: The Opera” was the result of a similar program with Henry Allen in the past.1077257_395860890520460_1502729790_oMatthew Green

Pet of the Week-Checkers!

Checkers
Hello!  My name is Checkers, I am an active and sweet, two-month-old boy kitten.  I am brown-and-black and quite handsome. I love to play and wrestle with my brothers and sisters.  I was in a foster home that had a cat friendly dog and we got along well.

If you would like to meet me and my siblings, we are at the Cape Ann Animal Aid located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane in Gloucester.  Please check our website at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com for upcoming events.  We always enjoy receiving cat and dog toys for animals here at the shelter.   We are continuing to accept returnable bottle and cans on Sundays from 12 Noon – 3 p.m. for our Transportation fund.

Don’t forget my name – it’s Checkers and of course I know how to play checkers and I always win!

Chickity Check It!- “Tale of 2 fisheries on stage and at the dock Play’s ’80s packing plant a far cry from today” By Gail McCarthy Staff Writer Gloucester Daily Times

The 1986 setting for the play “North Shore Fish” — now showing at Gloucester Stage resuming Wednesday night — hints at a foreboding crisis in the fishing industry that started as a trickle in the mid-1980s, and has become a veritable deluge in 2013.

But while the dwindling fish landings feeding into the background story for the Israel Horovitz play continue into the 21st century, it is under dramatically different circumstances.

Local fishermen today are fighting to maintain their livelihood against the pressures of a federal bureaucracy they believe wants to shut them down, but the workers who manned the plentiful fish processing plants in the 1980s and in Horovitz’s play faced a vanishing way of life due to automation, foreign competition and eventually, yes, a dwindling number of landings.

In the mid-1980s, millions of pounds of fish were landed daily by the Gloucester-based fleet — compared to the landings at the Cape Ann Seafood Exchange on Harbor Loop last Thursday, which was 7,700 pounds.

Sargent House Museum Block Party Pics

Dear Joey,
Barb Silberman asked that I send along some photos from Block Party at the
Sargent House Museum. This was a big night for us because this was the first
time Judith Sargent Murray’s plays have returned to life after 200 years.
North Shore Folklore Theatre, Co. made this possible by performing Act 5 of
"the Traveller Returned" (1796). To round out the evening, we had some folks
in costume, catered supper picnic boxes from Beach Gourmet, and historic
lawn games.
Thanks, Joey!

If You Are Waiting To The Last Minute… IT’S HERE!

IMG_0719It is so amazing (and a little overwhelming) to see this two-month capital campaign coming to such a positive end. Thanks to the support of our hundreds of our dedicated “Patron Saints,” we have raised $28,727 for our crowdfunding campaign via the online platform Indiegogo. As of today, counting all the offline pledges,we are now over 95% of the way to our goal of $30,000. We have just 1 day left until this campaign is history.

Please visit our Indiegogo page for the specifics as to how we will invest the money we raise through this campaign, as well as a list of 12 keen thank-you gifts (which range from bumper stickers to a private movie party to free admission for a year).

If you have not donated yet and would like to––or if you’d like to donate again––just click on the picture of the door above.

I’m so lucky to be able to do what I love to do, and grateful that I will be able to continue to serve this community I love so much.

See you soon,

Help Ned & the Big Babies Make a CD

Did you see Ned & the Big Babies at Dog Bar during the Block Party?  Wow!  Tight, crisp, rockin’ sound; you just can’t help but move around!  These guys are one of the most entertaining bands in Gloucester.  And the best thing is that you could hear them all the way up on Main Street.  I saw people dancing their way down to Dog Bar’s gorgeous outdoor dining spot on their Rogers St. side because you couldn’t just walk, you had to dance.  Thankfully, nobody took any photos of me dancing down there (at least none that I know of).

Imagine what kind of party you could throw with a whole CD of new Ned & the Big Babies songs.  Now click here and help make that happen!  Not so sure?  Watch the video:
