The Seafarer is about redeeming grace. How far would you go to save your soul? Sharky (the protagonist) has hit rock bottom and the play is about his struggle to overcome all odds including the devil himself-to do right by his friends and family.
McPherson (also wrote The Weir and St. Nicholas) is heralded by many critics as the best playwright of his generation. The play stunned audiences and critics in both London and New York and won the Olivier Prize for best new play in 2007 and received numerous Tony nominations.
The playwright uses levity as a bridge to a more profound meaning. The play holds audiences in stitches and stunned silence throughout. This production is co-directed by Jay DiPrima and Michael McNamara. The players are; Jay DiPrima, Rory O’Connor, Michael McNamara, Bob Karish and David Adams.

Be prepared for a disaster: Join the Gloucester Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) sponsored by FEMA
In a major disaster, emergency services cannot be everywhere at once, but properly trained citizens can be prepared to help themselves and assist their neighbors while waiting for the arrival of professional public safety personnel.
FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. With this training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace and community and can take the right steps to lessen the effects of these hazards on themselves, their homes or workplace. If a disaster happens that temporarily overwhelms local response capability, CERT members can apply the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to give critical support to their family, loved ones, neighbors or associates until help arrives. When professional help does arrive, CERTs provide useful information to these professionals and support their efforts, as directed, at the disaster site. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community and have been used to distribute disaster education material and provide services at special events such as road races, parades, sporting events, and more.
The Gloucester CERT team has already been deployed several times to assist in Gloucester’s Emergency Operations Center and in their neighborhoods during times of severe weather incidents. Our volunteers have been trained in emergency shelter operations, emergency communications and caring for animals during emergencies.
There are many jobs within CERT for someone who wants to be involved and help. During and following a disaster, CERT members are needed to assist at the EOC with documentation, help care for shelter residents, etc. Other CERT activities are more field related such as pumping cellars, filling sandbags, clearing snow and the like. Non-disaster related team activities may include keeping databases, developing a website, writing a newsletter, planning activities, helping with special events and organizing exercises and activities.
CERT training is open to anyone 18 years or older. Training classes will begin on Wednesday, May 9th 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Fuller School Library, and continue once a week for 6 weeks.
Class space is limited to 25 students. Applications are available on our web site at www.gloucester-ma.gov/cert or email us at cert@gloucester-ma.gov.

Celebrate Earth Day in Gloucester! Join Us April 21st for Gloucester Clean-up!
Celebrate Earth Day in Gloucester!
Do you know of an area in Gloucester that, if you had the time and the help, you would like to clean up? Well, here is your opportunity! The City, in conjunction with the Clean City Initiative, is asking folks to turn out for a citywide clean up on Saturday, April 21st (rain date Sunday, April 22nd).
The Clean City Initiative will be focusing its efforts on Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon, but the clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to choose a public area in Gloucester they would like to see cleaned up. We are also asking different groups to reach out to their members and pick a problem area to clean that day. Listed below are some hot spots if folks need ideas.
Green Street Playground Cherry Street
Pavilion Beach Maplewood Avenue
Magnolia Avenue Centennial Ave to High School
Poles Hill Fitz Henry Lane
Thatcher Road Railroad Avenue
Fort Square Gloucester Avenue
Details
If you are organizing a group and an area to clean, contact Rose LoPiccolo at Gloucester DPW before the event to let her know where you will be working and estimated number of yellow trash bags and clear recycling bags you will need. Rose can be reached at 978 281 9785. Rose will be maintaining a list of all the clean up spots to insure we are maximizing our efforts! Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools and re-useable gloves, although gloves will be available.
Not Attached to a Group??
On the day of the clean up, volunteers (all ages welcome!) should plan to meet at Stage Fort Park Visitors Center starting at 9 am until noon to sign in and pick up trash/recycling bags and gloves, if needed.
For questions about the event, contact:
Rose LoPiccolo, City of Gloucester Recycling Coordinator

Then and Now
Note To Broads That Tweet or Publicly Facebook About Lost Loves or New Love Interests Every Couple Of Months
Just don’t do it. You sound stupid. Really stupid.
You want revenge on a former lover? Ignore them. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Get out and have more fun than you’ve ever had. You tweet about your ex-lover,you lose. Bottom line.
If you run into them, laugh louder than you’ve ever laughed, smile wider than you’ve ever smiled and talk to everyone else in the room. It’ll drive em nuts
I’m here to help.

Cooper’s Hawk
About 6:15 last night, my son yelled for me to get my camera. There was a hawk in a tree right outside the window ripping apart a small bird. We live on Cripple Cove in East Gloucester, and I can’t remember ever seeing a hawk that close to the houses. It ate its meal while we took several photos then flew down and landed on top of my car before taking off. I did some research and found out it was a Cooper’s Hawk. Interesting!
