Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Trailer

Dear Friends,

You’ve heard me talking about my butterfly film (for Months!). I began filming the black swallowtails last July and am only now close to finishing.  I am so excited to share this project with you and hope you enjoy the trailer.

My daughter Liv and friend Kathleen Adams collaborated on a beautiful rendition of “Simple Gifts.” The music in the background is an improv interlude from their recording session.

Coming soon: Documentary about the Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, from egg, to caterpillar, to chryrsalis, to adult. Filmed in a garden and along the seashore, Gloucester, Massachusetts. Featuring the black swallowtail butterfly, wildflowers, pollinators, the sun, the garden, and more.

    1. Thank you Paul!!

Milkweed will most definitely bring Monarchs to your garden. Plant both Common and Marsh Milkweed. Spread the Common Milkweed seeds over a sunny spot in your garden, in an are that you don’t mind giving up entirely to milkweed because Common Milkweed spreads by underground runners. Marsh Milkweed is better behaved-more clump forming. I grow both species side by side and the Monarchs love the milkweed banquet. As an option from growing from seed–Large plants of both species don’t transplant very well because of tap root–better to purchase small, one-year old plants.

  1. Kim,
You did more than one thing here – not only did you capture a beautiful nature documentary, but you made a great plug for the Chamber of Commerce to promote Gloucester ;-)))))

  2. Thank you Alicia, Meg, and Deborah for your encouraging comments!
This is the first of a trilogy, all filmed in Gloucester, and the third documentary is specifically about Gloucester. So gorgeous to film here–one of my biggest challenges when editing is not being able to use all the beauty shots of Gloucester captured!
