Tulip Orama

This is a view into the courtyard garden I designed for Willowdale Estate. The tulips are at their peak. I call this mix of colors my ‘Bridal Mix,’ because it provides a symphony of watercolor hues for the April and May weddings. Don’t you think too that the satiny sheen of the tulip petals looks like the silk satin gowns of wedding parties?

Coast Guard searches for missing kayaker, requests public assistance

image

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is searching for a possible missing kayaker after a red kayak was located in the Annisquam River south of Wingaersheek Beach, Mass., Tuesday.

A good Samaritan located the kayak near the mouth of the Mill River at approximately 3 p.m. and notified the Coast Guard.

The kayak is a Field and Stream model and has a serial number of XLJ95913C111.

A Coast Guard Station Gloucester 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew is currently searching the area.

"We aren’t sure if the kayak simply broke free from a mooring or if there’s someone really missing," said Ens. Michael Barker, the command duty officer at the Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center. "Along with sending out a search crew, we are asking the public to let us know if they have any information regarding the owner of the kayak."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sector Boston Command Center at 617-223-5757.

The Coast Guard recommends kayakers and other paddlers place a Paddle Smart sticker with their name and phone numbers where rescuers may reach them or a friend or relative in the event their kayak is found. Paddlers and kayakers can also use a waterproof, permanent marker to write the information on their craft.

What you never saw & What to watch for in Brad Byrd’s New Video

Yesterday former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brad Byrd released his new video on GMG (see here) directed by another former gimmesound Artist of the Week Brandon Rose.  Excellent job, Brandon, Brad, Brie and everyone who made this happen!

Part of this video was shot at Minglewood Tavern on St. Pat’s day, so we thought we’d piece together some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of that video for you to see today.  You’ll see actresses Brie Hobbs trying out for the part of Brad’s girl-friend at the casting call and Stacey Iwanicki, who played one of the fans.  And of course you’ll see our boy Joey C, who was there for the entire shoot.  In the final video, there’s a good shot of Joey in the audience.  Welcome to the big time, Joey!

Brad will be shooting another video at Minglewood next Saturday, May 5, so you’ve got another chance to be in the audience and get on screen!  Stay tuned to GMG for details.

You know summer is on the way when there are 8 venues with music on a Wednesday night in Gloucester alone!  See the full music lineup here.

And the build-out continues!

Just wanted to update everyone that we had a great day on Monday at Art Haven’s new space, finishing building out some walls, getting the art materials thrift store cleaned out, and Sal Russo coming through HUGE by finishing repointing the back wall of our function room!

Here’s the awesome crew from Chris Fogarty Carpentry who generously volunteered their time to put up most of the walls in the space:

And the RAYS kids helping to get the thrift store ready!

And even a couple of the TAG kids stopping by to check out the awesome new space they’ll get to use! (Can you tell their excited?)

In the Pit ~ Lanesville

Quarrymen, Lanesville, circa 1890 Anonymous/©Fredrik D. Bodin
I have fifteen quarry photographs in my collection, yet only this one shows quarry workers. The negative is from a house in Lanesville, and came to me four years ago. These men stopped in the midst of their labor for a picture. Three granite cutters on top are double jacking vertical drill holes into the granite with heavy sledge hammers, which means they are alternately pounding on a narrow star bit, held by the brave cutter sitting down. As you can imagine, his was a dangerous job. Below, two quarrymen score a horizontal seam with hand hammers into the granite bed, where it will (hopefully) break cleanly. I haven’t been able to identify this quarry. If you recognize it, please let me know. Thanks.

PAVEL KOSENKO’S BLOG (ENGLISH VERSION)

My Russian blog started to be visited by many English speaking readers after I posted the following post. I thought it would be great to give this post a special place in my new English blog, and let it be one of the first publications.

I regularly visit the www.shorpy.com in order to get inspired by the colors of Kodachrome photo film. This website is quite famous and contains a lot of archived photographs, I am sure many of you already know it. My wish was to make a personal selection of photographs I particularly like, in good quality. I hope that you will appreciate them as well. All the pictures have been taken during 1940-1943. Now just look at them and get inspired.

Lost & Found

Another beautiful evening on Cape Ann! I enjoyed a nice walk on Wingaersheek. I love coming home to this…

A thoughtful person found a pair of little shoes left behind and put them in the “lost & found” at entrance 1. Come claim them if they’re yours!

Coconut went for a dip in the tide pool. If it was a little warmer, I would’ve joined her. Summer is just around the corner, I can feel it.

Tracey Muller Has Some Nice Things To Say About www.GloucesterWebcams.com

Tracey writes-

A Great Big Thank You to Joey and Good Morning Gloucester Webcams.

If you haven’t taken advantage of gloucesterwebcam.blogspot.com, I would put it on your priority list.  In just a few short months, it has become one of the top referrers to my hotel website and this is all from new visitors.  This is an effective way to advertise for free, every day and all year long.  It is easy to do and doesn’t cost a lot to set up.  Our virtual visitors really enjoy seeing the sites that we take for granted every day.  Visit the page now and take a tour all over Gloucester.

Thanks Joey.  You do good things for Gloucester.

Thank you for the kind words Tracy.  I really appreciate it.  It’s been fun working with the different businesses and the ones who embed the feeds onto their sites really get the best bang of how I envisioned it.  Much like you did on the www.bassrocksoceaninn.com website

I had lots of help from my tech guru Tim Blakeley at www.gloucesterbytes.com as well.  If it weren’t for him it probably wouldn’t have been half as successful.  Also my buddy John McElhenny who has helped promote it through the excellent work that he does on behalf of the city.

If anyone hasn’t visited GloucesterWebcams.com yet, click the icon below and feel free to bookmark it on your computer so you can always feel connected to Gloucester even when you are away from this place that we love so much.

Interesting Design Down On Rocky Neck

Down on Rocky Neck- As a fan of the gray shingle with white trim look I dig the simple design.  Can’t really figure out what the over hang is for though.  Kudos to the builder as the construction seems to be top notch.
