PLEASE don’t be creative with my hair!

Note to hair stylists: Unless they give you free reign,  please don’t get creative with your client’s hair!!!

Each and every time I get my haircut I bring in a visual aid, which is a sheet of paper with a half dozen images of basically the same cut. Slightly angled in the front, with only very MINIMAL LAYERS. This is one of the images:

This simple shape works well with fine hair and is very easy for me to maintain, without the need for stinky, sticky product, or use of ultra damaging blow dryer, or hot curling iron.  I love a hair style that is simple and classic. Working women and moms need an easy to maintain hair style-it is just a fact of life. I think most stylists (correct me if I am mistaken) choose to spend the time and money styling their hair on a daily basis, which is understandable, because they feel the need to look their polished best for their clients. My choice is to wash and go!

What makes a great hair stylist: THEY LISTEN. Things were going well during my most recent visit to the hair salon when suddenly my hair dresser’s energy changed; she became visibly more animated, then up went the hand to the top of my head, pulling a chunk straight up and  snip, snip, snip—she suddenly became a creative tour de force of layering.

If you have a favorite hair dresser please write in and let me know, and let us know why you like her.

Remedies to a bad hair cut: headbands, bobby pins, and up-dos!

  1. I so sympathize with your post.I’ve had my share of salon horror but one day I got smart and used “The Best of Boston” site and found the dream stylist, the cream of the crop, Tim Quirk. This was roughly four years ago and EVERY time he cuts my hair, I leave feeling like a million bucks. He takes his time, he listens and his attention to proportion and detail is GENIUS. You can find him at Salon Marc Harris on Newbury Street. You won’t be sorry…Go!

  2. Sorry to hear about your bad haircut. The cut Grace Kelly is wearing is a simple classic “bob,” an easy wash and wear style…in which I specialize. I am the owner and sole stylist at Beauty Bar located (locally) at 14 Parker Street in the same building as “Pratty’s,” aka, “The Parker Street Palace.” If you would like a free consultation my email address is: glougirl67@yahoo.com. P.s. I wash my hair every other day and hardly blow dry!

  3. I’ve been with my hairstylist for 16 years, following her to 4 shops until she finally got her own. I like her because she does what I ask and experiments only as much as I’m comfortable with. I too am a “‘wash and go girl” and she’s OK with not styling my hair.

  4. I *sooo* empathize with your post. I got my haircut at a fancy salon while on vacation in September and she put me back _months_ . I also can’t stand chatty-kathy hair stylists. I don’t want an interview and, as a new customer, I don’t want to talk about my family, my job, or even my dog. I want you to show me you can cut my ultra-fine, bland, straight hair well. And HELL NO I don’t want hair products! Stop the up-sell and just sell me on your professional talent. I will tip you well if you don’t chat me up – seriously.
I have moved around a piece and have had to endure this many, many times.

  5. I *so* empathize with your post. I have moved around a lot and have had to endure way too many chatty-kathy hair stylists. As a new customer, I don’t want an interview – I don’t want to talk about my family, where I am from, about my job or about my dog. I just want you to cut my ultra-fine, limp, straight hair well. It’s _really_ easy to do. And HELL NO I don’t want hair products. I don’t want an upsell, I want you to sell me on your professional hair cutting skills. AND I will tip you more if you talk to me less.

  6. Another vote for Salon Marc Harris on Newbury St.. I have been going to Rogue now for about five years and get a great cut every time. She listens and always gives me a great cut. I go about every three to four months. My husband always tells me I’m crazy to driver into Boston for a haircut, but believe me, it’s worth it.

I see her about every three to four months and get a great cut every time which lasts until the next appointment. My husband thinks I’m crazy to drive to Boston (sometimes I take the train) for a haircut, but it is definitely worth it.

  8. Catherine Curcuru owner of The Hair & Color Studio at 242 Main St., Gloucester is the best in my book. I am so grateful I don’t have to travel to Newbury St. to have this level of expertise. I’ve been lucky enough to have Catherine as my stylist for over 12 years. She is so talented that she teaches regionally for Paul Mitchell. Did I mention compassionate, nice and no attitude? Catherine has 2 ears and 1 mouth 🙂 She listens well and works so diligently at her craft she is too busy to chat on & on….If I ask for product information I receive it, if I don’t ask….no discussion:) I’ve relocated many times in my life and had to find stylists from Wellfleet to Minneapolis….it is extremely rare to meet an expert colorist and cutter all in one…stylist. Grateful Catherine is right here on Main St.!

  9. I just love Ashley Sears at Salon 127 right here in Gloucester. I used to go to Newbury St. stylists and pay twice as much but the key, as others have said, is that she listens to me. If I want something that won’t work with my very fine straight hair, she tells me. I know I am going to walk out of there looking great. The proof of that is that I am frequently asked where I get my hair done! She is a great colorist as well as stylist. Whenever my daughters come to visit they ask me to get them an appointment with Ashley.
