If You Let Them Cook It, They Will Come
posted by Elijah and John
One way we try to inspire our six- and three-year-old kids to spend time at dinner is by letting them make it. I cook at an island in my kitchen where the kids can sit and cook with me. The trick is to find things appropriate for them to do. That challenge inspired us to create this series called “Cooking with a Six-Year-Old,” though the age is not important – the theory holds true for any age.
Here is the first installment starring my son, Elijah, making hummus. Please write to him to ask questions, tell him what you think or let him know if you changed anything to make the recipe better – he would love hearing from you!

That was great! Kids love to cook and are more likely to eat what they help prepare. I love how he used his shirt for a towel! 🙂

I cook with my kids, too! Favorite jobs include mashing potatoes (or avocados) and pouring pancake batter or flipping the pancakes. I got a cool apple corer/slicer at some point that was very easy to use and much safer than using a knife: http://www.epinions.com/review/Back_to_Basics_Cast_Iron_Apple_Corer_and_Peeler_w_Suction_Base/content_259890384516
Anyway, thanks for your blog post! Cooking skills seem to decline in every generation, which increases people’s dependency on unhealthy processed foods. So, it really is vital on so many levels for kids to learn how! I take my kids shopping often, and also teach them what to watch for and avoid on labels, and we have conversations about it. :o)
