We have a group which is like FreeCycle, but the local version so much more tailored to the needs of our community. Membership is free and anyone who belongs has the right to tell the others what they need (for example, someone just moved into an apartment and needs a sofa and a microwave) or what they have to give away (someone else just got a new sofa so has one to give away or they are tired of their books and want to get rid of them, etc.). This is all done for free, no money is exchanged and it helps keep stuff out of the landfills and also helps people make do in tough times or just because they are frugal and would like to use their money other than to buy "stuff".
