Curtis/ ©Bodin Historic PhotoWorking with this photograph has been a lot of fun for me because I’ve met so many people who have fond memories of “Ketchop’s,” as they refer to it. They recall the quality cuts of meat, produce, and particularly the beautiful lantanas hanging from the columns. Notice the Laurel and Hardy movie poster, showing at Town Hall, leaning against the tree on the left. One local woman, a Ketchopulos, pointed out to her friend while in the gallery: “There I am as a little girl!” The Ketchopulos Market closed in the early 1970’s, but the building remains on Broadway.

Good Morning Gloucester 
This photo brought back memories! My aunt lived at 42 Broadway for many summers (and I was fortunate to spend many years with her), and nearly every day visited the market. Her first summer was 1929 and she continued her summers in Rockport until 1983.

I remember the market vividly. Whenever she had a special dinner to prepare, mother aloways shopped there. My wife and I often shipped there until we moved to New Hampshire in 1969

I remember shopping there with my grandmother. When we went to visit, I always looked for the lantanas because they meant we were almost to Gram and Grandpa’s house on Mt. Pleasant St.

This makes me so nostalgic for a time I don’t even remember. I’m so sick of getting in the car to drive everywhere for the most basic things – like food for instance. I wish we all weren’t so hooked on supermarkets and would support a business like Ketchopulos coming back to Rockport. By the way, whoever owns the building still keeps beautiful hanging baskets there in the summer, with an irrigation system that probably dates back to the days of the Market.
