The Art of Blogging

Maybe my idea of blogging is all wrong.

posting photos of Joey sitting on the toilet cost GMG a subscriber.

My sincere apologies for all who were offended! not really 🙂

Here’s a web page on ideas on how to blog.

http://www.artofblog.com/

Here’s one article from them;

Keeping the attention of a reader is important, especially if the reader is expected to convert.  There are four critical elements to getting and holding attention with copy: usefulness, conciseness, urgency, and a promise kept

Usefulness: What Does a Reader Want?

People do not tend to read texts or watch videos without a reason.  You need to give them that reason again and again.  This article starts with the main reason: keeping the attention of a reader, and it hits that point again and again.  You need to do the same thing with your writing by discovering what the reader wants to hear about and coming back to that point.

Here are a few ways to get a message across while constantly getting back to the focal point and providing useful information:

  • Headings and sub-headings – These should be logically broken up but also offer a promise of value.  Headers that start with phrases like ‘how to…’ or ‘why… does/doesn’t work’ are great ideas because they provide useful answers to questions.
  • Facts and figures – If there are any facts, figures, or projections, feel free to toss them in to drive home the point.  Be sure to quote sources and consider mixing facts and headings whenever practical.
  • Anecdotes are nice, but they need to be tied in – keep them short and bring them right back to the point quickly.  Leave no dots that need to be connected as your readers may not want to connect the dots for you.
  • Finally, be concise

Concise: Don’t Lose Your Readers

If there is one copywriting sin that I commit time and again, it is that I’m not concise enough.  This is a huge problem and it is one that loses readers.  To that end, do everything you can to tighten up your copy.  Re-read it again and again and chop out that which is not necessary.  I like to call this trimming the fat, and it is critical to keeping the attention of readers.

  1. I’ve been blogging for close to six years now and I blog 5 times a week. All I can say is you never know what is going to capture people’s interest. I write about all kinds of things, current events, my experiences as a writer and publisher, cooking, knitting, sewing (the homely arts), and post guest blogs now and then from various friends. It fascinates me when something “goes viral” and I get hundreds of hits or when one of my blog posts gets picked up by a major news service. You never know – but it’s always interesting.

  2. True, you never know what would be popular.
I enjoy GMG. But it is taking up alot of time trying to figure out what people would like. Blogging daily can be a chore. I think my time is coming to an end. It’s time for others to step up. EJ is a perfect example. She has a awesome mind for this and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
I think I cost GMG at least 13 subscribers Since i started. I used to get a kick out of midly shocking some, But GMG is going to the next level.
It’s time to concentrate on other things. One year! I didn’t think I would last that long. Consider this my 2 week notice. I enjoyed my time here it was sort of fun.
    DB OUT!

  3. I guess there’s a difference between a picture of Joey on a toilet and Joey taking a picture of what he’s looking at while sitting on the toilet!
Gee…That could be a subject for a GMG poll , which would the readers prefer? An image of Joey on the toilet? Or an image taken by Joey while sitting on the “throne”?

  5. Well, it’s really too bad that you’ve decided to bow out …I don’t particularly like the racier stuff….toilet sitting, undies down etc…I just don’t think it matches up with the main focus of the blog…but you are a part of what Gloucester is and you’ve had some good contributions…so why not let the shock value go and focus on your other areas of talent…?

    1. Hi Jay
      thanks so much
for your kind words! “My view of life on the docks” That’s what’s the tag line of GMG is or was.
If you’ve ever worked on, hung out at the docks or at a factory setting you would see or hear much worse. If anyone has been offened by what i have posted , i truly am sorry! not for the posts but for the lack of fellow human humor. I’m not totally sure, but I think we all end up on the throne at least once a day! It’s a part of life. Maybe not a part that most would like to see. But a part “I” find funny. If anyone has a problem with my sick humor and occasinal posts they can contact me directly at frontiero@hotmail.com (please leave Joey out of it, OY!) or they can scroll right by my posts. I do value peoples opinions and sometimes take them too personally. Thanks again for your kind words!
      Sincerely,
Paul F Frontiero Jr. (not Joey)

  6. Paul, you are unique and unrepeatable. It would be a shame for GMG to lose that unique piece that has helped make it what it is today. You have to do whatever works best for you, do what you love, follow your passion. You are a very good photographer, and your art rocks are very unique and special. I agree with Jay – focus on what you know and love (Gloucester), and keep it going in that direction. That’s why people read GMG, because they love Gloucester and Cape Ann, so give them what you and they love, from your unique perspective, and it won’t be a chore.

    1. Unique? maybe.
      Unrepeatable? absolutely! thank God!

As always thanks for your support EJ!

The pharse “consider this my two week notice” is one we use at the printing Factory where I work at when the Boss is giving us a hard time (in a fun way). We use whatever we can to get us through the day. Bustin Chops as Joey says, I use a different part of the male anatomy to bust when we are having a good time at work. Just ask Frank or Shew who have had their Balls Busted by me or there Ass grabbed by some sick twisted fellow worker. (not in a gay way. not saying there is anything wrong with that either)
I will continue to post but may take Shews advive and try to slow down and not feel so obligated to post if I don’t have an idea for that day. When I make a comitment to something I try to follow through with it. It’s been fun!, sometimes stressfull, but mostly fun! If you viewed most of my first postings a year ago you’ll know how much I loved Busting Joey’s and Sharon’s “CHOPS” It’s only beacause I love them that I do. Maybe you’ll be my next target! You never know what the future Holds.
Thanks Again for your Support and great Postings.
      Paul
