“Give a Man Enough Rope…”
Knot Tying with Gardi Winchester II

Join Gloucester native Gardner H. Winchester II for these entertaining, hands-on lectures and learn knot tying skills that are invaluable to all mariners.  This four part series is geared toward boaters aged 16+.  Each session is 2 hours long, starting at 7:00 PM, on the first Tuesday of June, July, August, and September of 2010.  Materials will be provided.  Workshop offerings consist of:

Tuesday, June 1, 2010: Knot Tying for Mariners: Participants will gain a basic understanding of line handling and knot tying.  Topics include proper line coiling and storage, the difference between a knot, a hitch, and a bend, the usage benefits and drawbacks of cordage of different compositions commonly in use today, helpful techniques for docking and anchoring, and the proper use of and how to tie the 7 knots most useful in the marine environment:  The Bowline family, the Trucker’s knot, the Tautline hitch, the Sheet bend, the Reef knot, Figure 8 stopper knot, and the Cleat hitch.

Tuesday, July 6, 2010:  Traditional Cordage and Line Handling: This lecture focuses on the historical usage of cordage and knots.  Participants will learn traditional techniques of canvas work and sailmaking, including roping and worked eyes, traditional splicing techniques such as working an Eye splice in natural fiber line using a Fid, traditional ropemaking and the construction of cordage, and the setup of dead-eyes and lanyards and the knots and seizing used in a traditional ships’ standing rigging.

Performing this Saturday at the Toodeloos! Toy Store Grand Opening

Leeny and Tamara
Hey Joey,

Thanks to your entertaining posts about Toodeloos! toy store, I went down to Main Street to check it out, and met the wonderful owners Susan and Don. I am so excited to let everyone know that I will be performing my kids’ music this Saturday at their grand opening celebration. The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 10:00am, and I’ll be doing a Leeny Tunes solo performance starting around 10:30am. There will be a few kids singing along with me too (stealing the show). And, I’m creating a special song, just for Toodeloos!

We recently found out that our CD, Sharing the Same Stars by Leeny and Tamara, has earned a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award! Here’s a link to our website and Facebook page if people want to check us out:

Local Blogger You Should Know- Abigail Cahill O’Brien- The 5th joy

Abby Cahill or how she now goes by Abigail Cahill O’Brien grew up in a bedroom less than 100 yards from mine. We all played tennis on her parent’s courts deep in God’s Country (East Gloucester if you didn’t already know). Her parents threw a fantastic tennis tournament in the summer in which the winners in each division would take home mini sterling silver salt and pepper shakers. I have a pair tucked away in a drawer somewhere from a mixed doubles win.

What is crazy is that I had not seen or been in contact with her or any of her brothers or sisters in about 30 years and just within the past year or so I’ve met up with Jason, Josh, Jonathan, and now through the magic of the intrawebs- Abby.

Apparently Abby is all grown up now and has matured into a lovely woman who has developed an exquisite sense of style. Her beautiful blog should be made into a magazine. It is filled with visual treats and recipes and all sorts of other goodness but the content and layout really is of professional caliber and her writing flows.

Chickity Check her Blog fifth joy by clicking this text

You can check out Abby’s blog which will now also be featured in the very prestigious GMG Blogroll to the right. She also does the twitter thing- 5thjoy
