Bob Viau Cape Ann Artist

A Call To Artists

From Bob Viau;
First and foremost, a big thank you for highlighting Cape Ann Artists.  I am responding to your “Call for Artists”.
Attached is a photograph and description of a sculpted 3 x6  relief  comprised of bronze, aluminum, copper and brass I created entitled “Philadelphia”.

There is quite a history behind this piece in that at the time I completed the work it went on display at a corporate office in Boston where a friend of mine worked.  His company was relocating and I was notified to pick up the piece.  When I arrived the next morning I discovered the sculpture was gone and only the brass frame remained mounted on the wall.  This sculpture of Philadelphia was nearly 400 pounds.  It would be no easy task to steal it but someone managed to do just that.  With the help of my friend and the police, the search was on.  I showed photographs of the piece to everyone.  No one had any information.  Completely discouraged, I knew I would probably never see the piece again.  Living in Gloucester and seven years later I get a phone call out of the blue from an old friend who was an electrician in the wharf buildings in Boston.  He says “Bobby, you know that sculpture of yours that was stolen? I have it”.  You can imagine the shock.  He explained he caught some guys moving it into an office building.  He told them it was stolen property and the name Robert Viau was sculpted into the back.  They handed it over and took off.  It turns out they were connected to an advertising agency that was located a few floors up from the Boston office it was originally displayed at.  When they heard the business was relocating, they came down in the night and stole it off the wall.  It is back now and currently for SALE for private or corporate collection.  The piece is listed at $13,500.  I am offering a 15% commission to anyone who can complete full sale of the piece.  All the work on my website is my own at www.studiovo.com .  Please visit my studio at the 121R at the East Gloucester Marina.

Best, Bob Viau

What do you see when you look at this picture?

Do you see a bunch of junk or do you see a beautifully composed photo?

Fred Bodin’s Fish and Pics

A double Christmas present to my better half was a twofer I picked up at Bodin Historic Photo Gallery right here on Main Street in the West End of Gloucester:

I can stand at the window on the left and line up the street with the historic map and wonder what the Avenues looked like when Eben Phillips was thinking of developing the whole point. My house was there in 1884 when the map was done so the horse hair insulation is authentic. (Real horse, really blows for insulation.)

And the ceramic Striper can remind me that small stripers are being found right now so the blues are not far behind and with that smoked bluefish pate.

Fun Fact: Visit Fred’s website and click on the events calendar. The most recent addition is a wine tasting on Feb 7, 1998. I missed that! It was catered by the Grange Gourmet. I miss them too. I think in the summer of 1986 I visited Grange Gourmet about every other day.

But back to Fred. Glad to see he has his priorities straight and is not wasting time screwing around updating his website. No need. Everyone knows where to find him.

Gallery, Studio, whatevah. (Kudos to Fred for not rolling his eyes.)

Tom Shea’s Sweet Chili Buffalo Wings

Dinner with David Cox and we both agreed these were fantastic.

Tom Shea’s new Horseshoe bar with views of the Essex River is fantastic.   The food is great and I highly recommend the bar menu.

Deb Clarkes Painting Class 05/16/2010 6:30am

“St Peter’s Square, 6:30 am” by Deb Clarke, oil on canvas. colors: grumbacher titanium white (original formula), grumbacher cad yellow pale,  grumbacher yellow ochre, grumbacher red, winsor newton cobalt blue.

From Deb Clarke;
We met at St. Peter’s Square this morning to paint and discovered there is a lot of color in this busy downtown crossing in Gloucester.  Not too many peeps around, plenty of parking.  I was set-up and painting by the time the students arrived.  We packed up at 9.  This is the painting that I did of Intershells’ new seafood store.  The building used to be green.   Now it is ochre with a blue float moored along side. Perhaps the float will appear in the Fiesta Parade or the Horribles?  not too far away, and then, well, summer will seem to be over.    Below is my source material.
I think I saw more color than the camera.  Liz wnated to know what else I would do to my painting.  I wasn’t sure, so I asked her what she would do.  She thought I should work into some of my color shapes.  So I did and I added some foreground interest.
Here is Liz working on her painting.  Interesting how the Intershell sign intersects with Liz’s easel.  almost looks like part of the painting.  and below is the shot over Tom towards Liz’s area of interest, followed by Tom’s second color study of the morning.

What impressed me about this morning is that each painting had its own ‘color’, unique to each artist.  Two weeks ago I introduced pthalo blue into each student’s palette and the resulting work looked as if we all used the same color recipe.
My friend Charles drew with us for a while.  He is concentrating on perspective and started a delightful drawing of the Blackburn Tavern Building and the wacky architecure surrounding the Washington/Main Street intersection.  I suggested he go to the library and look at the watercolor drawings of Raoul Dufy.

Please join us if you would like to paint or draw with us for a few hours.  Classes are $25, bring your paints and/or drawing materials. we will meet next sunday morning, weather permitting at 6:30 in St. Peter’s Square parking lot to set-up to start painting by 7.  The sun was four fingers above the horizon when I got there this morning.  Next sunday I might arrive by 6.  There is a lot of visual stuff down there.  Could keep an artist busy for a life time.  and if I keep doing this, I just might become a landscape painter, or at least a colorist.

best,
deb.

Korean War…60 years later

Hi Joey,

I ran into Mel Olson (might be Olsen) on the Blvd. today. He had his Korea hat on and got a misty far-away look as he spoke about the war.

He told me that he had put something in the paper asking folks who were there to contact him and no one did.

It’s been 60 years this year since the start of that war…and the Korean people are themselves very grateful for those who defended them.

http://www.kw60project.com/aboutla.html

Mel was a teller at the Gloucester Co-op for a number of years and most recently has been a member of the board of directors of the Ipswich Co-op Bank (now called Institution for Savings).

It hurt me to sense the feeling of futility Mel experienced as he stated the facts.

He hasn’t had much help, but I thought if you could put something out there on Good Morning Gloucester, folks might step up to help him get a 60th anniversary project going.

I appreciate what you do and hope there’s another Korean War vet out there who is proud of having defended South Korea so that they still have a country today.

Thank you,
Kristen Callahan

Giuseppe’s Ristorante & Piano Bar Going Into The Space Formerly Occupied By Elliott’s At The Blackburn

Memory Layne (not her porn star name I’m told) and her man Joe are taking over the space formerly occupied by Elliott’s in the Historic Blackburn Building.

Check out the website for now and look for updates as to the renovations taking place in these pages.

Here’s the website for Giusppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar

From the website-

It seemed like a simple request…

From the back of a restaurant, I called out, requesting one of my favorite songs.

Joe looked up at me from the piano and asked, “Can you sing it?” After we met that summer evening, Joe and I did what everybody does on Cape Ann…..walking beaches, breathing salt air, taking in the great food and entertainment.

Neither of us enjoyed being separated once the off-season rolled around and he traveled abroad for work.  It didn’t take us long to figure out it was time to create a special place for people to enjoy great music, food and company.

We’ve been working and dreaming, in the hope that you will enjoy a unique and wonderful experience here at Giuseppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar.
