seARTS Note-Card Opportunity

Call to Artists who create original Note-Cards

seARTS would like to create a “Cape Ann Collection” of note-cards representing contemporary artists of Cape Ann. This is an opportunity to showcase the diverse and colorful range of artists and designers working and living here. Whether you make cards representing your work or make note-cards exclusively, we are interested in your submissions. You do not have to be a member of seARTS to participate in this program.

seARTS will assemble a package of 15-20 different note-cards in unique seARTS packaging and the package will include a list of participating artists, with contact information for each. The cards will be offered for sale as a mini-fundraiser at the Fall Fundraiser From Broadway to Beauport October 17, 2009. They will also be for sale on the seARTS website. Note-Cards are a great way to market your work, so we recommend having all your contact information on the card as well!

The cards will be reviewed for quality and diversity. If your card is chosen we will be asking you to (create if you haven’t already done so) and donate a minimum of 50 cards, preferred quantity is 100 of the same card to make up the sets for the Fall Fundraiser. If this is successful, we will continue the program through the end of the year and work with artists on a commission basis.

After designs are accepted we would ask the artist to provide cards for the sets.
Please email or mail up to 3 different design samples to:

You will be notified by September 18th if your card is accepted.

Lobster Dinner Night With The Mrs

I’m not usually a fan of posed pictures (having to endure holidays with my mom lining us up for posed pictures ad nauseam).  I usually prefer action shots.  When you get a backdrop like this I’ll make an exception.  It doesn’t hurt to have the Mrs to balance out my ugly mug.

End of Summer Local BBQ at The Farm Bar & Grille

Sunday, 09/27/2009 2:00PM

Details:
Join the Slow Food folks up ‘North’ at the Farm Bar & Grille in Essex for an afternoon of local meats, local veggies and local beer — plus some local music!

We’ll be gathering for the afternoon of Sunday, September 27th at 2PM to enjoy one another’s company and the best that the end of season harvest can give us. Think slow-smoked meats (maybe brisket? maybe baby back ribs?), root veggies on the grill and bread from Virgilio’s Bakery. To wash it down, we’ll have Gloucester’s own Fisherman’s Pumpkin Stout from Cape Ann Brewery. All in all, a nice segue into the fall season of food.

Although we believe an afternoon in the back yard of The Farm is darn good enough, we’re piling on a little more; live music! Evan Goodrow, a ‘soul-singing, bluesy, guitar-playing powerhouse’ will be performing in order to keep our ears buzzing as our palates do as well!

Reserve your space today – bring your family, your friends, your neighbors – the more the merrier. Spots are $35 per person and include everything for the afternoon. You just need to bring your smiles and your appetites – and your dancing feet!

Directions:
The Farm Bar & Grille is located at 233 Western Avenue in Essex, MA. More information about them can be found on their website.

THURSDAY SEPT. 17

From Dave Sag – Thursday Night Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line

This Thursday at the Rumline we  have Mr’ Steve Sadler, he of the searing guitar and monotone joke delivery. Steve’s an old pal of ours from the old days and we’re always glad to see him. You may remember the Barking Sharks, Steve’s last band around these parts before  he took off to see the world. And now he’s back!
Backing him up will be Mr. Greg Dann, drumnist for Secret Cervix and all around nice guy, and, of course, Greg T. and myself. An enjoyable nite!

And don’t forget: all you under-employed folks with time to spare, c’mon  down to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday for some swingin’ jazz and dixieland courtesy of the ol’ Salty Jazz Band. I’ll be there. Blast off is at 1 Pm

Art Haven Classes Being Offered This Fall

Free and Discounted Classes at Art Haven this Fall

GLOUCESTER, MA— Many families will inevitably be tightening their budget this fall and extra-curricular activities, such as art, will more than likely be cut from family spending to make room for other necessities. To prevent the arts from falling by the wayside, Cape Ann Art Haven is offering free and discounted classes for low to moderate income families living in Gloucester thanks to receiving Community Development Block Grant funding from the Federal Housing and Urban Development Department.

“This grant is giving us the opportunity to do what we really want to do, teach art to anyone who wants to learn,” says Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow.  “We want every kid, or adult for that matter, to be able to come in and enjoy being creative.”

This summer, a total of around $2000 was awarded in scholarships to 13 Art Haven students in a variety of classes, including mural painting, darkroom photography, youth clayworks, painting, drawing, and open studio time.

Art Haven hopes to get more people drawing, painting, sculpting and taking pictures this fall with the funding from the Community Development Block Grant. As fall classes gear up, they are offering a full gamut of creative possibilities, including darkroom photography, painting and drawing, clayworks, pottery, collage, and whatever else students of any age can think of to create on their own.

For more information on scholarships or Art Haven itself, call (978) 283-3888 or stop by 180B Main Street in Gloucester.  You can also visit the Art Haven website at www.arthaven.org.
