Alright Here’s My Top Pick For Schooner Festival

Al Bezanson and I have been beating the drum for you to make your reservation for a sail aboard one of the many fine Schooners coming to Gloucester for Schooner Festival but I have to put my two cents in here as far as my Number 1 Pick.

Obvi- The Thomas E Lannon.

Tom Ellis and Kay and Heath and their crew are hands down the friendliest funnest people ever to sail a schooner.  Tom Ellis being my hero and all doing something he loves to do and getting paid to do it in such grand fashion.

So anyway call now to book with the hometown team- The Lannon or The Ardelle.  Once the Ardelle sends me their Schooner Festival schedule I’ll post it as well.

This from Kay-

Lannon and the Schooner Festival

The Schooner Festival is our favorite weekend in Gloucester. Lots of schooners will be here this year and that always makes for interesting sails. The Lannon will be sailing a lot over those few days, so check out our schedule and join us if you can. It is always fun to see these other vessels in our home port.
Friday, August 31st, we are sailing from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 3:00-5:00 p.m., 5:30-7:30 and offer a sail in the moonlight with dessert from 8:30-10:00 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 1st we sail at 12:30-2:30 p.m., and 3:00-5:00 p.m. Then we offer a chowda and lobsta roll sunset dinner sail from 5:30-7:30 and a fireworks sail with dessert from 8:00-9:45 ish.
Sunday, Sept. 2nd is Schooner Race Day. Come onboard and join the crew for the day as we lead the Parade of Sail and then race in the Mayor’s Race for the Cameron Cup. Great fun!
Monday, Sept. 3rd, we sail from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 2:00-4:00 p.m. and offer a sunset Celtic Music sail from 4:30-7:00.
We never seem to know exactly when the participating vessels will be arriving and departing, but we will do our best to sail near them for you. Bring your camera!
Give our office a call at 978 281-6634 to make your reservations. We hope to see you onboard.

HUGE REMATCH RESCHEDULED – Sugar Mags vs. Classic Cooks Tomorrow (Thursday) at 4pm

OK, you’ve waited patiently now for 4 weeks to see this epic rematch and tomorrow is the day — 4pm Stage Fort Park — weather looks great — and we have a special twist: Ā Thursday’s throwdown will help answer the questionĀ How does local seafood affect the health and diet of young people?Ā  In addition to the pro judges (Lara Lepionka of Backyard Growers andĀ Beacon Street FarmĀ andĀ Hallie Baker ofĀ Turtle Alley Chocolates)Ā we’ll have 3 youth judgesĀ who will make sure the chefs’ creations are compatible withĀ young people’s palates — a very tall order, indeed. Ā So bring your kids and get them to try the dishes too.

Here’s a video that Joey made of the last contest between these two culinary giants (check out the end of the video where Angela Sanfilippo tells you what to do with the head of a hake — delicious!)

And here’s the press release from Niaz Dorry of theĀ Northwest AtlanticĀ Marine Alliance, who sponsors the throwdowns:

Seafood Throwdown Brings Unique Partnership to Farmers Market
Highlights Local Seafood in Healthcare Industry’s Purchasing Decisions

Ā Gloucester, MA – Seafood Throwdown, a unique cooking competition that highlights the importance of local seafood in restoring a healthy ocean ecosystem, is back at Cape Ann Farmers Market on Thursday, August 23, 2012 with a twist: focus of this Throwdown will be to highlight the role of local seafood in young people’s health and diet while showcasing the work underway to assist healthcare industry in shifting their buying practices to support locally caught seafood. The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance have sponsored Seafood Throwdowns for the past four years to raise awareness about why “Who Fishes Matters.”

This Thursday’s event is a rematch between Classic Cooks andĀ Sugar Mags. Last year’s Seafood Throwdown winner Julie Ann Geary of Classic Cooks Catering will be joined by Justin Grandin of The Happy Taco food truck. They will compete against 5 time winner Sugar Mags who will be featuring Lidia Sands and Sandro Carvalho with owner Missy Hart cheering from the sidelines … download theĀ full press release PDF here.

After the throwdown, be sure to stay in town for a night of great music at 10 local venues. Ā See the full music lineup here.

We were going for a whole Joker from batman look with the shadows across her face (my fault not hers).

Seriously this is the coolest idea involving art I’ve ever heard of.  This could blow up and be absolutely HUGE and one day we will be looking back and say, yep it was that brilliant Sarah Kelly who kicked off this huge Art Revolution.

Just had to send a shout-out to ‘Local Colors’

If you are shopping for a unique or special gift, then ‘Local Colors’ is the place to visit.  Besides supporting local artists, you will come away with a special appreciation for their work, & of a quality shop with something for everyone’s taste.

I found some great earrings, made of tin — check them out there!  There are many types & styles.  One pair is more fun than the next!

And, we also purchased our daughter & son-in-law’s 6th anniversary gift — some beautiful photography of rocks at Good Harbor Beach — one of our & their favorite spots.

Bravo, ‘Local Colors!’  You are ‘top of the line’  — with original, beautiful artwork, & a classy, yet comfortable shop to browse & enjoy.

See you again!

Jazz Icons Celebrate Birthdays at the Rudder, Rocky Neck!

SS850077

Legendary jazz concert promoter Fred Taylor and publicity luminary Sue Auclair were feted at the Rudder Saturday night by local pals Ellyn Baltz and Block Party Block Heads Judith Brackley and Valerie Marcley.

Fred has produced everyone from John Coltrane to the Bobs Dylan and Marley. If you’ve seen a jazz concert in Boston, it was probably one of Fred’s. Throughout his lifelong commitment to music and breaking talent he has introduced us to Richard Prior, Earth Wind and Fire, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pat Metheny and countless others at his respected jazz clubs, Pall’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop on Boylston Street – remember them? Sue works closely with Fred and for years with the Newport Jazz, Newport Folk, Boston Globe, Tanglewood Jazz and a billion festivals through her Sue Auclair Promotions. The talent these two have worked with – when will they write their books?

Miles Davis once acquiesced that Fred was hipper than he! Sue and Fred handled Miles’ comeback in 1981. Fred’s still producing concerts and is the Entertainment Director of Sculler’s Jazz Club in Allston, turning it into one of the top ten jazz clubs in America.

The lovable Freddy told jokes and did magic tricks to the delight of Rudder patrons. His entourage, always an assortment of adoring women, prompted one woman diner to say, "However old you are, you must be really special to be surrounded by so many beautiful women!" Fred and Sue love the Rudder and come up as often as their schedules allow, and agreed ā€œIt’s the tops!ā€ for their dual birthday celebration.

Proceeds will go to The Open Door Food Pantry and Cape Ann Community Cinema

In the early 1970’s, Grace Schrafft and Grace Moceri left their respective husbands with their infant children in tow to be together. Grace Moceri is the responsible one, the one who makes sure the bills are paid and the doors are locked. Grace Schrafft is the free spirit that everyone in town knows and loves. The two Graces are deeply rooted in their hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Grace and Grace made a life together for 37 years. The Love Part of This explores their meeting, their ensuing love and their struggles being a couple. The Graces share their stories, both separately and together. We also hear from an ex-husband, their two children, the town pastor and a family friend.

After the unexpected death of one of the Graces, the footage becomes an uncanny document. Suddenly, all the words about their lives together take on a finite quality, as the remaining Grace goes through the process of grief. It is heartbreaking, funny and extremely moving.

Zip Line Kid shows you how to chop wood and use a socket set to fix a wagon

When we built the zip line (See those videos here), we had to chop down some trees and since yesterday wasn’t much of a beach day, John decided to chop them up and fix his wagon so he could haul the wood into the garage to store until it gets really cold. Ā In this video he shows you how to chop wood with an ax and use a socket wrench to repair a wagon (red wagon, of course).

Lots of great live music going on RIGHT NOW on this beautiful Father’s Day (click here for some ideas we gave you yesterday). Ā If you play your cards right, you could take Dad to see 8 shows between now and 9 tonight! Ā See full live music lineup here.

He Joey,

Hope this email finds you well.

Super exciting Mile Marker One is going to be opening for lunch and dinner next week, and then about a week later we will be open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner!!!!

We have our tented deck like we had last year, but we have a few more additions as well. A brand new inside, directly on the water’s edge, year round dining room. Also we have more deck waterside seating off of the indoor pool on the Pool Deck with fantastic front row seats to Annisquam River and Boat ramp activities.

Our menus are in action, fresh seafood, burgers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and appetizers in case you want to ā€œEAT, DRINK, and CHILLā€.  We can’t wait to get the word out.

Two of my biggest questions so far are – is Mile Marker One where the Gull use to be? NO if you enter into the Hotel Lobby area a hostess will greet you and show you the dining areas. Second question – Can we come to Mile Marker One by boat – YES! We are encourage you to come by boat, and if you do it is free dockage with a Mile Marker One receipt. Boats need to contact us on Channel VHF 10 and the dock staff can assist in a location for tie up.

Zip Line Kid Saves Bird Nest & Eggs

Well, our son John has a new project this week. Ā While repairing our roof, we displaced a bird nest with eggs in it and John moved the nest with some help from Vickie, who’s been talking to the bird for some time now suggesting that she really didn’t want to be in our roof anyhow. Ā Watch this video and see how mother and son help out another mother and her (hopeful) offspring.

13 venues with music spread throughout the day, all day and night — it’s going on right now! Ā No reason to stay home. Ā Check out the full music lineup here.

Ā In this video (the first of our week-long Blues Festival Series) the producers give you a preview of some of the music you’ll hear and artists you’ll see. Ā Remember, you can save $12 if you buy tickets in advance ~ Get tickets here.

It’s a great week for music on Cape Ann with 22 artists performing between now and Thursday alone! Ā See the full music lineup here.
